Hey Rebecca, how did you end up writing contemporary?

Well, that’s a good question! A while ago, I was minding my own business on Facebook when my message box popped up. It was Heather Bennett and JoAnne Kenrick.  They’d had a great idea. A calendar series, one hot guy every month who would be part of the same calendar. The stories could come before, during, or after the calendar shoot. 

The idea blossomed and Aidan was born! And then Stacey soon followed. 

I hope you love them! I do.

 

Where do your ideas come from?

Its really amazing, isn’t it? That an idea for an entire story can take place from one conversation over Facebook.  To be honest, there were aspects of this had been brewing for a while. I lived in New Orleans for three years, met my husband there, and loved the idea of putting a book together there again. It had been a while. 

I loved the idea of love reunited. Of old hurts being faced ad let go. 

The thing about Aidan and Stacey is that they have both faced a lot of problems and successes in their time away from each other. Stacey is an award winning photographer. She would not have that career if she and Aidan had continued together on the path they were on.  Aidan is a doctor.  That had not been on his agenda before he left home.

Relationships are never perfect but if timing is everything than perhaps February of this year is finally the time for Aidan and Stacey. Come see how they get there!

Saying Goodbye to an Old Friend…

I’m feeling rather bittersweet at the moment about saying goodbye to Rachel Clancy. If you have somehow not heard me shouting to the roof, my Warrior series has ended with the final book in the series, Justice, releasing today.  Initiation, which was the first book in the series, is the book that first led me to Decadent Publishing.

The series is four books long and should be read in the correct order, they do not stand alone (as I’ve heard many reviewers complain about lately) so consider yourself warned.  They have to be read in the right order and the whole story is not complete until the end of the fifth book.  The right reading order is Initiation, Driven, Subversive, Redemption, and then Justice.  The story is an urban fantasy tale in a dystopian future where our heroine has to fight for her life against maniacal scientists, werewolves and vampires. She also falls in love and makes some really bad choices (and some good ones) along the way.  She is sixteen years old in the first book and eighteen by the end.

I loved her, loved writing her, and for a period of time until I said goodbye, she felt like family to me.  I’ve never actually cried finishing a story the way I did when it was time to finish Justice.  Thanks so much for joining me on this wild ride with her.  Have you ever cried to see a favorite character leave a book you’ve written?

Welcome, Rebecca Royce! We have some questions for you about your steamy Edge series book, Out of Place Mate!

When we first meet Sean, he's upset. He thinks his two brothers aren't focused enough on their work and have possibly been railroaded into marriage by a couple of gold diggers. He's also making not-very-nice comments about shifters--in a bar full of them! Doh! But when Victoria drags him off, he doesn't seem to mind too much. What is it about Victoria that attracts him right off? 

Well, she’s a beautiful woman and although he doesn’t know it yet, he is her mate.  There is something about her that draws him and he can’t help but be completely taken with her. Even though he’s really annoyed with his brothers.

It's not too long before Victoria has him thinking with his cock. Why is there such a disconnect between Sean's head and his body? He's almost open mouth - insert foot! But his body responds to Victoria as if he was made for her.

He was made for her, literally. Why is there a disconnect?  Well, he’s really, really attracted to her, and Gunther’s bar is a place where that kind of magic seems to take place.

When Sean sees her naked, what does the sight trigger in him? What place does it touch?

The protective side. The side that has him rushing into a bar ready to do battle for his brothers, is that same side that makes him want to keep Victoria safe, keep her his forever.

How hard is it for Victoria to let him see her that way? Why does she, knowing how Sean thinks of shifters already? Victoria thinks Sean is an alpha male of a lover. I can see hints of this. Tell us, if Sean wanted to go all alpha lover on her, what would he do? 

Oh, its really hard and made more difficult since he is human and she doesn’t trust them. I don’t know if I can say in a PG forum what he would do! LOL 

I think part of being an Alpha lover is being very protective of your partner/mate.  I think he would make sure she was really sexually satisfied and comfortable all the time.

They seem like two of sides of the same soul. Were they both searching, always for the other half?

Yes. They belong together.

Why does Sean still smell like sandalwood and why didn't he change out of his tux?

He didn’t change out of his tux because he was so focused on getting to his brothers that he never had the time and as for the sandalwood, I think we all have our unique scents and that one is his.

Is he going to ride again now? I mean, besides Victoria : )

Ha! Maybe. 

I won't say what Victoria does to Sean at the end, but...was she just as surprised as he was?

Completely surprised.  But Gunther’s Bar was very good to that family….

A few months ago (or maybe it was more, time moves so quickly when I’m as busy as I am…) I learned that Decadent Publishing was opening a new line called Tease. I love writing for Decadent and knew I had to write one!

So, I set out to write a story about a witch. Why? Well it had been a long time since I had written a witch story and I thought it would be fun.  It was.  Campbell and Olive were born. 

For those of you looking for dark paranormal (my normal genre) this is not that. This is lighter and, I think, somewhat amusing. Or maybe I just really, really relate to Olive. 

You’ll have to read it and let me know what you think.

In honor of my new release, Love In One Night, I thought perhaps I would let the world know the secret life of an author.  Or in other words, what an author goes through when a book is out on submission.  This is exactly my day when Love In One Night was sent to Decadent Publishing several months ago.

6:00 AM—Wake up. Get the kids up. Make sure the hubby gets his stuff in order and out the door.  Check my e-mail. Scroll through.  No e-mails regarding the submission. 

7:25 AM-Take the kids to school. Check email on the phone when I get there. Come home. Eat breakfast. Check it again.

8:45-Take youngest to nursery school. Check e-mail on phone when I get there. Answer the ones my Mom has sent regarding school pictures.  Get back in the car. Go home. Check e-mail.

9:30ish—Write. Stopping every 10 minutes to see if I have new e-mail. 

12- Eat lunch. Watch TV. Wonder if I have new e-mail. 

1- Write blogs, do promo stuff.  Check e-mail. 

1:30—Pick up my youngest from nursery school. 

2:30 Pick up my older two from school. 

3:00 Help with homework stopping to check e-mail periodically.

5:00-7:00 Cook and Eat Dinner with my family. Try not to think about my e-mail.

8-10 Watch TV with my husband

10:30 –Check e-mail one more time while my husband complains that I really need to put out the light. 

Wake up. Do the Same thing again.  So, you see, before a book is even contracted, a writer is OBSESSED with it.  That’s how much we love our books and how excited we are to get it to you.  I hope you’ll check out Love In One Night and that you’ll enjoy my Prepper short story.  I love it.

Meet Decadent Cover Artist Trisha Schmitt!

 How did you get your start in Graphic Design?

I have always been the creative type. I love to draw and do pastel landscapes. I am a huge reader, and one of the series I adore is Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed novels. When I joined her fan forum, I was introduced to photoshop. I was hooked!! I started to make banners and little graphics for the peeps on the board. It kind of spiraled into me teaching myself everything I could in Photoshop. From there, I went on to photo-retouching for photographers, which helped hone my skills, but was boring.. So I put my love for books and art together and started pushing to do cover work. Here I am now!

What are your favorite sorts of covers to do?

Hmmm... My favorite.. I really love anything paranormal. They have more creative freedom and are just plain fun! Nothing like a hawt vamp to make my muse sing.

You’re one of our house cover designers. Do you remember the first project you did for Decadent Publishing?

 Ha, ha, well.. Heather kinda fan/stalked me before I did any work with Decadent. (Not in a bad way! I just posted how much I loved her stuff on her FB page. LOL!--Hb)  I do a lot of character fan art for the books I love, and she found me that way. I love know she had rotating wallpapers of my art on her computer. That kind of stuff rocks my world! Then, I believe we were in some sort of chat one night, and I said to Heather, " Hey, why am I not creating covers for you?! " a few weeks later I had my first cover project Another Chance by Rebecca Royce. I love working with the team at Decadent. You all rock! Oh and FYI, Heather can booty dance like nobody's business!

What are a few of your best or favorite Decadent Publishing covers?

I really like Usher's, Inc. that was fun and my first and I think only YA cover!  Daughter of Lust was challenging and creative, too.

What other authors do you design for?

Oh, too many to list! I have done over 136 covers this year alone! I am a workaholic! When I get a project assigned, I have to get it done THEN! Which is getting harder to do. I am working with a few major NYC houses now, and they keep me pretty busy!

Do you have other creative outlets besides designing?

I love to scrapbook. Which I have not done in ages, but I love it. The design composition with scrapbooking actually is the same as cover composition.

Meet amazing author...

 Rebecca Royce!

How did you start your writing career?    Well, I was pregnant with my second son and my husband challenged me to write the book I kept talking about writing instead of just talking about it. On Sundays when his mother would come visit to help with the kids, I would write.  But, oh boy, did that novel not turn out well. I didn’t know then a lot of things I know now. However, I did learn that I was, in fact, capable of writing a full-length novel from start to finish.

After that I joined an online critique group—two actually—and I found that not only was I lucky enough to make a lot of friends trying to do what I was doing but I learned a ton about the craft too. I was published one year later.

Where do you dream of traveling to and why?  I have the travel bug so there really isn’t anywhere that someone suggests they’d like to travel to that I don’t immediately think ‘oh yes, I’d like to go there too.’  But, I think that right now my most immediate dream is that I’d like to go to the Napa Valley.

3. Does travel play in the writing of your books?   To a certain extent.  But it tends to be more of two characters in a car running for sanctuary as opposed to exotic locations and high priced drinks.

4. Tell us about your current release.  My current release is called Another Chance.  It is a Vampire Romance about a secret, elite vampire branch of the US military.  One of the vampires finds himself falling in love with a reporter who has a penchant for getting herself into trouble. 

Patrick O’Callaghan is a vampire grappling with the fate that has been laid out for him. Turned into a vampire during World War II, he lived for many years as a crazed monster searching only for blood and dishing out death.  That is until he is approached to join a unique unit of the United States military, a special operations division made up of vampires looking for a second chance, for a way to redeem the horrors they have caused by serving God and Country. The only catch? He had to give up human blood. 

Jennifer DeMarco is a hard-nosed reporter and the daughter of an Admiral in the United States Navy.  When she goes missing, kidnapped by terrorists she thought to interview, Patrick’s unit is sent out to rescue her and then remove her memory of the events, making it like they never happened. 

Things start to go awry when Patrick responds sexually to Jennifer, something that hasn’t happened since he was made a vampire.  New truths are unveiled to Patrick-things he never thought he either could or should have as a creature of the undead-and Jennifer’s life continues to be in danger.

When disaster strikes, the two will discover that there are second chances if only you’re willing to take them.

5. Do you believe in ghosts?  I didn’t used to but I kind of do now—which I hope doesn’t make me seem kooky.

But, I’ve seen some things that sort of make me believe.  Its not like I walk around with a flashlight screaming to the heavens that there are ghosts but I am now, I guess, open to the possibility that there are a lot of things out there we don’t understand. 

6. What was your first sale as an author?  My first book was called Her Wolf: The Westervelt Wolves Book 1.  I’m currently finishing up the second to last book in that series, which is bittersweet for me.

7. What is your favorite color?   Purple. Not exactly sure why…

What Drives You Forward?

Each time I sit down to write Rachel Clancy, the protagonist of The Warrior series, I find myself answering a question.  In Initiation, the first book in the series, I needed to know what would happen to Rachel when she discovered that the monsters she’d feared her entire life, the ones who existed outside, or Upwards, from where she lived were not necessarily as bad as the ones she knew at home.  What would that do to her? And isn’t it the same for all teenagers?  Doesn’t part of growing up mean reassessing the childhood beliefs that the adults taught you to help you get through the day. Who was Rachel? How would she make it through?  

Rachel impressed me so much.  I didn’t really know what she would do when I sat down to write her story and by the end of it she and I knew each other very well. Although she is in no way me, (She is much braver than I am.) I like her a tremendous amount.   

The next book, I knew, would be more complicated for her because the question plaguing me that would be the momentum for Rachel’s story was hard.  When all hope is gone, what drives you forward?  Because learning that lesson is part of the journey every teenager makes.  In Rachel’s case, the situation is different than teenagers today.  In our world, no one is being asked to fight vampires or werewolves. But we do ask teenagers to handle their peer groups, their coaches, their teachers, and sometimes the expectations of the adults around them as they figure out who they want to be for the rest of their lives. 

Driven is complicated.  But Rachel is magnificent and I can’t wait to tell her next story.

Who's Starring in Initiation?

 

Hi everyone, its Rebecca Royce and I’m so excited to be blogging here today because today I get to talk about one of my favorite topics, which is who I would cast in the movie versions of my books! I think about this type of thing all the time. Not because I actually think they will be movies (wouldn’t that be cool if they were?) but because I am sort of setting up small movies in my mind when I write the books.  So without further ado…I will attempt to cast some of the characters from my books “Initiation: The Warrior Book 1” and “Eye Contact” for all of you. 

Initiation…Post-Apocalyptic Paranormal YA book. 

Rachel Clancy: (This is hard because she is the main character of the book and the books in this series are in first person so she really needs to BE Rachel for me.)….Emma Stone.   Why Emma Stone? Because I think she shows the right amount of toughness and vulnerability.  I think she’s hugely talented and, well, she’s a redhead as is Rachel.

Living the Decadent Life!

Hello! I’m author Rebecca Royce and this is my first time blogging at the Decadent Publishing blog so HELLO and Thank You for having me! While I am new to Decadent Publishing, my first book Initiation, a Young Adult Paranormal, doesn’t have a release date yet, I’m not all that new to publishing and I have to admit, I love to Blog!

Today, I was thinking about Decadence. What does it mean to live a Decadent Life? Does it mean having what you want? Because aren’t we, as good men and women, not supposed to indulge in all of our greatest fantasies?

A good example of this, I suppose, could be illustrated with a television show I was watching while I ate my lunch today. The show is called House Hunters International. It follows couples, usually Americans, on a journey to purchase Real Estate in foreign countries.

Today’s adventures were about a couple who had two children from Idaho. They had sold a bunch of houses they’d fixed up themselves and now they were moving to Honduras and they wanted to buy a beach resort.

I watched, stunned, as they looked at one beach resort after another and contemplated the pros and cons of each resort as both a business and a home. Finally, I realized what it was that had me staring at the television with my mouth open like a landed fish. These people were actually moving from Idaho to do something that most people talk about doing but never ACTUALLY do. And seeing them doing it felt…decadent to me. The idea that people might decide to live the life they want to lead as opposed to the one that would be normal, more standard, is somehow indulgent. They were throwing away their comfortable life in Idaho for a much more adventurous one in Honduras. Heck, I suppose it wouldn’t be too much to say it’s the kind of thing heroes and heroines do in the fiction I read and write. In real life, I know very few people who throw caution to wind and sail off into the sunset. (Especially with a 3 year old and 1 year old with them.)

But, why not? Life is short.

I started to think about this in terms of my own life. Isn’t that exactly what I’m doing? Writing things I hope to get published (like my book coming out with Decadent Publishing!) as opposed to spending that time doing something that might be considered more productive?

So, I decided to applaud the couple from Idaho who have never run a resort before in their journey to Honduras as I embrace my decision to keep writing and telling the stories in my head!
