Finding Prince Charming in a sea of Frogs!

Available HERE
By Zee Monodee

I am a 3rdgeneration Indian, born and raised on the south Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. Bollywood movies? Story of my life, literally! No, we didn’t break into song at every opportunity, but the drama and over-the-top-ness of the Indians in those movies? We had our fair share...sometimes multiplied triple-fold by overbearing mothers and aunties who (supposedly!) know best!

So what’s life like for a girl of Indian origin, never mind in India, Mauritius, or everywhere there’s an Indian diaspora thriving?

You can expect to be going on the marriage mart – officially, that is – when you turn 16. Yes, you read that right! It’s not unheard of to have girls in the A-levels’/junior & senior years already engaged and going to tie the knot the minute they graduate high school.

Oh, and if you’re one of the super-beautiful ones (especially, understand by that, that you have fair to white skin!), you can be snapped up as early as 14! Society mamas, or even prospecting future bridegrooms, prowl wedding ceremonies on the lookout for the most beautiful/fair girl so she can be snapped up ASAP (Beyonce’s “if you like it then you better put a ring on it” rings soooo true here!).

So yeah, let’s imagine that like the majority of Indian-origin girls, you have brown skin (from pale almond butter brown to honey tone to really roasted-nut hues... If you’re darker than an unpeeled almond, you can hope to join the line of becoming an old maid because no society mama wants a dark-skinned girl for her boy!).
What happens now? You’re, say, 18 years old, and have finished school. University is a diversion that can be ‘tolerated’ for the sake of the girl getting a top notch job later and thus making her even more snap-worthy on the marriage mart (hopefully, before she turns 25. After that, the prospect of the old maid shelf starts to loom...)

Remember those obnoxious and overbearing aunties? That’s when they come into play. There’s even a name for them – the “agwa”, literally meaning, the matchmaker. Well, ‘agwa’ auntie will approach your mum and tell her of this “very suitable boy looking for a girl to marry.”

If he’s tall, the eligible pool will be reduced to tall girls; same if he’s short. Then there’s the question of – does he want a wife who will work outside the house, or does he require a housewife? Of course, the family AND his whole
life/dating/existence history would’ve been vetted beforehand! (Same for the girl, btw). If ever he/she has had the misfortune of being spoken for or worse, engaged and then the relationship broke, everyone will expect to know what went wrong, and especially whose fault it was! (because, of course, there’s got to be one at fault, and that person will then be blackballed in the ‘agwa’ world).

I always expected an auntie would bring a “proposal” (yes, like a business merger!) for me when the time would come for me to “look for a suitable boy”. Luckily, I never got to that stage, because I had the good luck of marrying the one I fell in love with (to stay in tune with Bollywood drama, there’d have been countless wailing and tears from the mother – “How could you do this to me, to our family? Don’t you have any shame?” – intense perusal of the other party’s life, family, family tree, finances, social status, etc – not to forget the many, many talks of “are you sure of what you’re doing?” Note: these can sometimes turn into brainwashing sessions!)

Diya Hemant, the heroine of Light My World, is one of those girls who vowed she would never let herself be entrapped in any alliance by an “agwa” auntie! Thanks to her combative spirit, she succeeds...and then she is 24 years old and she herself knows the time has come for her to settle down. She’ll find Mr. Perfect on her own terms, thank you....but she never expected this quest could prove so hard – there are frogs everywhere, and worse, there’s even an ogre who appears into the picture!

What’s a girl to do? Find out in Light My World, Book 2 of the Island Girl trilogy!

Around and Around We Go!

When I first started writing, I would write a great little story and then move onto the next fascinating tale. It would be easy and fun. I’d find the new names, the new setting, and the new conflict with the next couple.

But then my brain expanded and did something strange. It started soft whispers that I might like writing a series. Huh. It was an idea I hadn’t thought of before. Why not give it a chance? So, I wrote a 4 couple novella series. The stories weren’t well written yet (we’re talking back in 1999), but I enjoyed having a band of characters who interacted. They showed up in their friends’ stories and we got to see what happened to them after their own happily-ever-after. From that point, I toyed with the idea of writing series on a more regular basis.

Time went on, I got better as a writer, and then Decadent Publishing offered me my first contract. Of course I was over the moon, but…I soon had brilliant ideas about how to make the first story one of at least three, if not more. What emerged, after many months, was my Scottish contemporary and my Scottish romantic suspense novellas. Yes, all are individual stories and they do not have to be read in one specific order to understand (I’m not a fan of those), but they are all connected in at least one way. Readers, so far, have enjoyed that. So what did I do? I wrote another book for Decadent, which eventually became Liar, Liar. The full-length romantic suspense book that stood alone…until…

I met the hero, Grady Cooper, of Liar, Liar and his hot brother. As I wrote Grady’s story, I found his brother, Scotty, played a bigger role than I’d originally planned. By the time the book was finished and for sale, I’d already accepted both Grady and Scott’s plea for the younger brother to get his own book.

Lately I’ve started taking notes about how Scotty finds love. You’d think that would be enough for now, right? Nope! While I’ve been jotting down little details on my brainstorming notebook (yes, I still write longhand), Scotty has been subtly pushing for me to give his partner a woman, too.

{{Sigh}} I guess I’ll be busy for a while!

What about you? Do you enjoy series? If so, do you like the ones that are just connected but each story is its own or do you like the type that must be read in order?

Today is DAY 3 of my Liar, Liar Blog Tour! Come follow me on this path, tweet about the tour and share the details on Facebook. For each comment you make (or tweet or Facebook post) along the way, you’ll move closer to winning one of three great prizes!

Blurb:
Unable to protect her mother from her father as a child, Devin McQueen has made it her mission as an adult to protect as many abused women and children as she can. The rare moments she’s not consumed with work as a victims’ advocate, she limits her involvements to safe, predictable men….until she meets bounty hunter Grady Cooper. He is big, bold, brash, and has no problem speaking his mind.
Growing up in a broken home, Grady realized early on that good deeds had a price.  To survive, he learned to weigh every decision by what he could gain. Unfortunately, the successful, solitary life he’s worked so hard to create spins out of control when demons from his past shake his confidence. His boss has given him one last chance—bring in Devin’s latest client quickly, and quietly and maybe he’ll still have a job. It didn’t sound unreasonable until he met Devin.

Suddenly, Grady must make a decision: save his career or follow his heart?

Rock Star in the House

Coming Soon!

“Get out the ice water and fan…Desiree Holt delivers smoking hot alpha heroes and red hot romances.”

Lea Franczak, USA Today Happy Ever After blog

I spent a lot of years in the music business but it wasn’t until recently that I drew on those experiences for my writing. Downstroke and Having It All kicked it off. Then I met the sexiest bass player, Jackie Joyride, who became the inspiration for, what else, Joy Ride, a story of love that could not be denied, despite a million obstacles.
Of course you, my readers (and I thank you for this) wanted the stories about the rest of the band and so Sydney and Rick’s love story was born in my brain. It’s about an industry that demands almost more than it gives. That makes it difficult to have a real personal life. That doesn’t always allow for feelings and that is rife with jealousy.
But it’s also the story of a band with the electricity of the Lightnin’ for which it is named. And it’s the story of two people, a hot rock star and a feisty promotions agent, who collide like an explosion of fireworks. What do you get? #Aftershock.
You can follow Syd and Rick’s story from Decadent Publishing beginning March 28. And Marc and Emma from joy Ride  play an integral part in what happens. So come on along.

***

She was still buzzed from the evening when she checked into the hotel. Lightnin’ happened to be checking in at the same time and their excitement was palpable. Even Danny and Garrett came over and gave her a hug. They all rode up in the elevator together, the guys still jazzed, laughing and bumping fists. Except for Rick, who was strangely silent.
They all got off at the same floor she did and headed to their rooms. She was shocked to discover that Rick’s room turned out to be right next to hers. She couldn’t help sliding a glance at him and was stunned to see him watching her, a ravenous look in his eyes. There was no mistaking the desire in his gaze. Did he want her to join him? Or should she ask him if he wanted to come into her room? What was the protocol here?
Unsettled, she fumbled with the keycard at her door, dropping it in her nervous haste to get inside her room. She wasn’t aware he had moved until suddenly he was beside her, taking the card from her fingers. He slid it into the slot and when the lock light turned green he pushed the door open.
“Here you go.” He held the door back with his body, waiting for her to enter the room.
“Th-Thank you.”
She moved past him, rolling her suitcase into the room and turned to him. Before she had time to say anything he grabbed her arms, turned her to face him and pressed her against the door.
“I’ve been wanting to do this all day.” His voice was heavy with a combination of emotion and desire. “I think tonight calls for a celebration, don’t you?”
Speech deserted her and all she could do was nod. She wanted him, this man who had exploded into her life. More than wanted. She was hungry for him, a passion that never seemed to leave her. Reaching up her hands she cupped the roughness of his late night beard, loving the scratchy feel of it.
She tilted her face up just the least little bit to accommodate him and his mouth came down on hers. The minute their lips met heat surged through her as if someone had lit a match to her blood. She clutched at his shoulders to steady herself, knowing she should break away even as her body cried for more. She was drowning in him, his heat and scent invading her. And all she could think was more, more, more.

Can there be Love in Erotica?

How can such a short story contain both aspects? Well, Molly is searching for the man she loved, the man she lost. Without enough proof, she refuses to believe he’s dead, and sets off into space to find him. She gives up everything, leaves family and friends behind, for him. Would you do that for the person you loved?

And, of course, when she believes she’s found him, their reunion is hot and heavy. But is everything as it seems? Has Molly really found her fiancé?

Here’s an excerpt:
“Incoming message,” the computer chimed. “Source located one nautical mile away, starboard.”
She brushed her hands across the console and brought the video feed from the ship’s right hand side onscreen. The image quivered, and she groaned when it finally became clear. A Moloxian starcruiser.
Shit! I just want to go home. During her search, the crews of the few Moloxian scavenger ships she’d come across had been willing to let her pass if she traded with them. But she had nothing left, only enough food and fuel to reach Earth, and even then she’d be hungry during the last leg of her journey.
“Play.” She decided to listen to their demands, give them what they wanted, and move on. She had no other choice. Starvation was a better alternative than providing the sexual services they’d always hinted at. The Moloxians, though humanoid, had scale-covered bodies. So incompatible with her own. She wouldn’t survive unscathed and didn’t sleep around anyway.
“Prepare to be boarded.” The deep computerized voice shook her. No slur, and therefore not Moloxian. Who the hell was he?
She didn’t have time to contemplate. Her blood boiling, she gripped the arms of her chair. The creature, whatever species he happened to be, planned to come onto her ship. No one boarded without her permission, which she would not grant. At the sound of her transporter, like the pitter-patter of rain on Earth, she leaped from her seat and spun around. She grasped her bolt stunner and pointed it at the figure materializing into solid form before her eyes.
With a huge outline, the male boarding her ship would only bring her trouble. If his strength matched his size, she had one option: to kill him. She took in his bare, broad chest, sculpted abs, and muscled arms. His tanned skin shone with brilliance, as if the sun rested behind him. She gazed up at his dark hair and warm brown eyes. He studied her with an intense stare while his soft lips curved into a smile.
   She gasped. “Diego?”

By Cate Masters

Santa couldn’t have given me a better present than Decadent Publishing did this year – the release of my holiday novella, Blue Moon Over Bliss Lake!

I may have to croon Blue Christmas for days! But in a joyful rather than melancholy way. Blue moons bring luck! And to me, symbolize second chances. I couldn’t resist playing with that particular idea in this story. And if you love the movie Serendipity, you’re bound to love Blue Moon Over Bliss Lake, too – both have slight touches of magic only found during this season. Combine that with two hearts who’ve yearned for each other for a long time, and it only adds to the magic of the story.

Blue Moon Over Bliss Lake launches a new series, a bit different from most other series in that it’s linked by title. The characters don’t repeat, but they’re some of the best characters I’ve written so far, I think. They really pop off the page to life. I hope you’ll agree!

I hope Santa does too! He seems to be enjoying his copy, doesn’t he?

Do holiday stories help put you in the spirit? However you celebrate, I hope you’ll have a wonderful and joyous one.

Here’s a peek at Blue Moon Over Bliss Lake:

Can Fate give two people a second chance at love? Sierra O’Brien and Carter Grove are about to find out. After an accidental meeting near their hometown of Bliss, Pennsylvania, events from their past reoccur. Will they make the same mistakes and drift apart again?

In Bliss, the inexplicable is an everyday occurrence, and anything is possible—especially during a blue moon.

Traipsing Through Tropes

By Landra Graf

Everyone has favorite tropes. Certain ones are easier to write as well. My favorite trope has always been reunited lovers or at least people who should’ve been lovers now given a second chance. From a writing perspective it’s not hard to develop the relationship because in some way these characters already had a previous relationship either as friends, lovers, or enemies. One character is usually a bit infatuated or at least fancied themselves in love with their opposite. Whatever the reason the ties are broken: a misunderstanding, an argument gone wrong, betrayal, deceit, familial obligation. I find myself hopelessly caught up in how these two people, meant to be together, will overcome the odds and find a happily ever after.

So when two of my characters appeared wounded and seeking someone to help heal their hurts and understand their needs, I knew Madame Eve would be the one who get them back together. Trust me when I say while reuniting characters creates some great conflict and can evoke a lot of emotion, those words are as tough to write as a query letter or synopsis. The end result is magic and if you’re a fan of the reunited lover’s trope then the 1Night Stand series is a good place to find some.

My characters, Royce and Victoria, were childhood best friends until a disastrous first kiss in college. It’s been years since these two have seen each other, long enough for Royce to not realize Victoria is the woman he’s set up on a 1Night Stand with. For all the sexual tension in the room and the desire to be close there’s plenty of baggage these two have to drag through before the light at the end of the tunnel.

This would be another reason reunited lovers is my favorite trope, all the secrets have to come out of the closet.

Now I ask you is reunited lovers a favorite trope of yours? Or do you prefer tropes less or more volatile?

Blurb: Royce is looking for a woman who won’t cringe at the words “sexual submissive,” and a chance for all his fantasies to come true. The 1Night Stand he signed up for was supposed to be simple with no attachments, but when his match is his ex-best friend, simple goes out the window. He can’t stop seeking the answers to why Victoria left or deny his new-found attraction to her.

Victoria has loved Royce forever, but his rejection of her affections eight years ago caused her to walk away from everything. She’s not the same girl from college, and no longer naive and willing to run too just anyone. A sexual dominant born from her mistakes, she wants a chance to start a relationship based on her terms. She’ll settle for one night, but she’s planning on forever.

What You Need’s release date is TBD.

A Marine of Plenty Playlist

by Heather Long

When it comes to writing my Marine books, I’m often asked what did I listen to while I was writing? When it came to the holiday Marines, I had to listen to a holiday playlist – particularly since I wrote these in May, June and July—with temperatures soaring up to 100+ outside, finding the chilly, holiday spirit took some serious musical assistance and some specific songs. Come spend Thanksgiving with Charlie and Jana, and God bless all those who spend their holidays defending our country and far away from their families.

Thank God for Kids by Oak Ridge Boys

You’ve Got a Friend by James Taylor

Thanksgiving Song by Mary Chapin Carpenter

What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong

If Tomorrow Never Comes by Garth Brooks

Thank You by Led Zeppelin

Thankful by Josh Groban

Blessed by Martina McBride

Love this Life by Crowded House

God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood

How far can your imagination take you?

On the Rocks available HERE
Firstly, I would like to say a big thank you to my friend and fellow Decadent author, Zee Monodee for suggesting a topic for my post today. I often find myself stuck on what to blog and I found I just had to answer this question:

How far can your imagination take you; what’s the line you wouldn't cross in PNR?

The paranormal genre is limitless. The possibilities are endless. There are so many myths and fables; so many documented creatures, all of which have come from somewhere, and are ever changing depending on their origin. The veil of truth on the existence of magic, creatures, and lost worlds is so very thin.

I for one believe that all of the above existed once upon a time, and the idea that there is so much more out there, beyond what we have been taught to believe is real or not, oh, it’s thrilling. As a reader it makes a story so much more enjoyable, as an author . . . heaven, because we can recreate these creatures, these legends and myths, over and over, changing them to fit into our worlds, making them fresh and new; making them real, 3-D.

This genre is a playground in which an author’s imagination can run wild. It is a genre in which you are free to even create new creatures and worlds because where there is a touch of supernatural, anything goes. Who are we to say what is and isn’t real when it is created outside the boundaries of what is classed as “normal?” If it is paranormal then it exists; it’s real, because anything is possible within this genre.
In regards to my own imagination, I have yet to reach a limit; I have yet to reach or even find a line that I wouldn’t be able to cross, and that would be because I have yet to stretch my imagination to its full potential.

I have been writing stories for three years now--not include the few projects I had as a teenager – and I can honestly say that I have only dipped my toe in the slush that is my warped little mind. I know there are more stories in me, bigger ones, more daring, more adventures and definitely ones that cross into genres that I don’t feel brave enough to take on just yet. Ideas just keep coming, mostly as dreams, terrifying, provocative dreams; each one is very different – although most contain that special dose of paranormal - but I still feel like there is more. So, I write them down and put them away, but I haven’t yet come to a line that I couldn’t cross, because there is always a reason for why events in stories happen, and sometimes, they aren’t pleasant.

Talking about unpleasant, I could have crossed a line with my F/F dark erotic paranormal short story, On The Rocks, which is part of Decadent Publishing Edge Series. I could have made the outcome a lot different, less “satisfying” and possibly macabre. Believe me, I was tempted, but I was too amused by the way the story turned out. You see, On The Rocks was the first story I wrote where I picked a lesser known creature and had the chance to mould her into something completely different.

On The Rocks is sexy, terrifying, and a little twisted. Curious? Here’s a little taste:

Excerpt:
Her warm breath skated down my neck causing a shiver to curl around my spine. She straightened then slid her hands through my hair. My eyelids fluttered at the feel of her fingertips stroking over my temples and along my hairline.
   “I saw you watching us.”
I stared at her. “Excuse me?”
“Do you like watching?” She retrieved a few items from the vanity table, twisted two sections of my hair, and pushed the hair clips into place. “It’s all right. You can tell me, Meghan.”
My body tightened at the husky way she said my name. The knot between my legs pulsed under her piercing stare. I had no idea how, or even why she managed to get under my skin, but God, I wanted her.
“I’m not a pervert or anything.”
“I know you’re not.” She slid a chain of small red flowers into the black mass of my hair.
“I just heard a noise. I guess my curiosity got the best of me.” I shifted on my seat. “I’m sorry—”
“Don’t be. I liked you watching.”
My nails dug into my knees as her hands moved down my throat. Her skin like satin—her touch, soft. She ran her fingertips over the top of my breasts.
“I would have asked you to join us, if you hadn’t run.” Her gaze caught mine again while she slid her hand inside my skin-tone bra. “Will you run now, or will you do what we both know you want to do?”
~ * ~
Zenzie is promiscuous, but terrifying?
If you’re interested in finding out why, and what happens next, leave me a comment to be in with a chance of winning your very own copy of “On The Rocks.” A winner will be picked with the help of Random.org at midnight – 6pm est time – on October 20th.
Thanks for stopping by! Have a fab weekend.

Blurb:
On the Rocks is the hottest club on South Padre Island, and Meghan’s new workplace.

If the warped mermaid uniform isn’t enough, the fact that she can’t stop thinking about the club’s singer, Zenzie, is. Everything about the female gets Meghan hot, but when she finally gets her shot with the temptress, it turns out Zenzie isn’t as perfect, or as human, as Meghan thought.

Incorporating places I’ve visited into storylines

By Starla Kaye

I just returned from visiting the United Kingdom for ten days and I’m ready to go back. It isn’t that I don’t enjoy my home country of the United States, but there is something about the UK that draws me. Especially Scotland and the Highlands.

With the wonderful invention of digital cameras and cameras on smart phones, I take hundreds of pictures during my travels. I get rid of a lot of them, but still there are many that warm my heart as I look back at them. I particularly like visiting castle ruins and imagining what life would have been like when the castle was an actual stronghold. Many of the castles I have visited have breathtaking views of the countryside or the lochs they overlook. But during their heyday, it was critical to be able to see your enemy coming.

I enjoy touring every inch of the partial ruins, which isn’t all that easy. As I struggle to climb those tiny stone steps in the circular stairways to reach the various levels of the castle and the ramparts, I constantly wonder how people managed to hurry up those steps when it was necessary to do so. And going back down those staircases isn’t that much easier. No, life back then wouldn’t have been stress-free.

As I travel, I am constantly looking for places or things that will spark a story idea. The photo of The Clachan pub (the oldest pub in Scotland) is one possible setting currently floating around in my head. I just need characters and a plot to go with it. There are so many potential ideas.

When I wrote The CEO and the Cowboy, I also used places that I was familiar with. Daniel lives in the Country Club Plaza area of Kansas City, which I have been to many times. And Calhoun has a ranch in the Kansas Flint Hills, another area that I have driven through a lot. Personally, I like to incorporate places that I have visited into my stories so I have a better “feel” for the settings. That isn’t always possible, of course.
