Topic – Rope + Sex = A Good Time?

Buy Tied Down HERE

By Kacey Hammell
I think being tied up/down during sex – whether scarves, rope or ties for instance – is a powerful and liberating freedom that many enjoy.
Submitting to one’s partner, being on display, allowing them to show how much they wish to touch while the other is unable to resist or deter them from their journey… It’s a heady experience to be at someone else’s complete “mercy”, and it strengthens the trust between the couple.
How the rope touches someone’s skin – caressing, tight, sometimes even comforting – is sexy and powerful. And aphrodisiac, if you will, and adds to the baser senses. The inability to touch heightens the tension and desire for some. The helpless factor ramps up the sensations and it makes for a liberating experience.  With the passion and eroticism of the moment, there’s also a freedom of being tied up and surrendering. The freedom from everyday life, stress, and getting away from one’s own thoughts. Feeling completely alive to enjoy someone else’s care.

Not many people are willing to give up any control, such as Isabella in TIED DOWN, but it takes a strong man to show her the true person she is. He has to be in tune with who she is – as a woman as a whole – and know what makes her tick, what drives her and the best time to make “his move”. Brady loves his lady and will do whatever he can to fulfill all her dreams and desires…and his own!

Tied Down
The time has come for Brady Jacobs to grab hold of the woman he loves and their future. But his lady, Isabella Knowles, is skittish. She’ll bolt at the mention of a future with him. He needs to handle her with precise planning, tools to seduce and never give her a moment to flee.
Brady will tie her down, pleasure her, push her farther than she’s ever experienced…then ask her to marry him. But no amount of planning can ensure Bella’s answer won’t include the business end of her Glock.

Excerpt:
Isabella stirred at a tug on her ankle. She shifted, not in any way eager to wake up.
Snuggling her cheek deeper into the pillow, she sighed. The web of slumber curled around her as she relaxed again.
At the shuffle of footsteps and a thump, she stirred. Her eyes flew open and she lifted her head. As she shifted to her side, she gasped.
Why couldn’t she move?
Jesus, what the hell?
Danger screamed through her mind while she took in the room around her. Right where she’d fallen asleep, in Brady’s bed.
No need to fear for her safety. Right?
“What the fuck is this?” Damn the bindings around her wrists and feet. “Brady!” she screamed. She’d kill the bastard who dared to enter their personal space. Cripes, if he’s been hurt, she’d carve out their hearts and throw the bodies in the ocean.
“Brady!”
“I’m right here, babe.”
His head appeared over the foot of the bed. Her heart skipped a beat. Safe. Her head fell back in relief. She’d die if something happened to him. Could never relive him ever being hurt again. She’d barely survived once before when he’d been stabbed and almost blown to bits. She did not ever want to go through anything like it again.
“You okay, babe? These scarves aren’t too tight, are they?”
So lost in her own thoughts, she forgot she lay there, tied like some prisoner.
“What the hell? What’s going on?” He knelt at the end of the bed. She gaped as she took in her naked body, the scarves holding her legs and arms captive. Her heart rate accelerated. She had no control over any of this. Desperate to get out of the ties and the situation, she pulled hard, jerked her limbs to escape their captivity.
“Fuck! Goddamn it. Let me loose.”

Giving Thanks

By Kacey Hammell
Thanksgiving is fast approaching in Canada, on October 8th, and around my house one of our traditions is to circle the table so every person can give thanks for something(s) they are most thankful for during the year.

This year I have plenty to be thankful for. As always, my family. My hubby, three kids, Mom & big brother, who I admit – I worry about like a regular mother hen no matter how old they are – and who always make every day full of love and laughter. And each one is so supportive of my writing – my Mom passes out my postcards that I carry in my purse to people in restaurants!!! – and make sure I have quality writing time.

Friends – unfortunately, a lot of my friends (in person) do not read as much as I do, don’t always “get” that people can write a book and be published online in ebooks but not have prints to “Show” for it.  So it makes me doubly grateful and thankful for the online community of authors, readers, promoters and advertisers who understand the world I write in and give a lot of support in any ways they can. I have about a dozen authors that I can turn to on any given day and they are there with a shoulder to lean on, even via email, I can feel their warmth, and sounding board for a WIP or to understand a negative review.

Then there are my publishers who I give thanks for. They took a chance on my work, provided every avenue to get the book(s) published, polished and into the reader’s hands. This year I’ve been blessed to have four releases with DP and appreciate, thank everyone at the company for their support.

The above are just a few things I’ll be saying aloud at the dinner table this year.

I know for some Thanksgiving may not be something they are thinking about yet, but wherever you live or when you celebrate Thanksgiving, I’d love to hear some of what you’re thankful for this year.

It’s never too early to sit back and appreciate everything you’re blessed with.

My four releases with Decadent Publishing, all a part of the In the Arms of the Law series. FYI -- WILD THUNDER releases October 2nd !!!

To read excerpts for each book, visit my “Bookshelf Page” on my site that will lead you to each one.

Remember, let me know something(s) you
are thankful for this year!

5 Reasons I Like to See the End of Summer…

by Kacey Hammell

I know many would say, YAY the kids are returning to school (Sept 4 here in Canada) so what else is there to say? For me, it will mean a lot more writing time most definitely but I detest the routine of morning lunches, homework in the evenings etc etc. I like having the kids home to keep things always entertaining, and so the crazy routine is forgotten for a while.  End of summer for me (my household) means return of our fave shows. Here are my top 5 reasons to love the end of summer this year!

1.   REVENGE Returns!!! This show instantly became an addiction. I confess, while Jack and Daniel are hot (hell, as is the whole cast!), the fashion is gorgeous, the scenery is spectacular, it was Nolan Ross that kept me hooked! That dastardly, geeky sexy kind of guy, wealthy, mischievous – okay, vengeful and secretive – he’s the type of mystery I love. Plus his humour and devotion to Emily (with more secrets!) is charming and sexy. The added bonus of course is Emily getting answers/revenge against the Grayson’s is equally addicting. While I believe forgiveness is the best course of action, I have to say, I LOVE how Emily does it.

2.   SUPERNATURAL Returns – need I say more than just Jared Padalecki (Sam) & Jensen Ackles (Dean) ??  Castiel…Hell… No, I didn’t think much explanation was in order.

3.   GRIMM Returns (well already did about 3 wks ago) but love the spin on old fables and tales the GRIMM way. Plus the relationship between Monroe and Nick is amazing. The show weaves in some humour with the intensity of each episode.

4.   NCIS Returns – can you believe how things were left last season? Explosion, Abby & McGee seemed to be in the midst of it straight on. Ducky on the beach!! I plan to have tissues handy and try to keep the nail biting to a minimum when it returns. I can’t even begin to say what the demise of any of the main characters would mean to me. I mean, don’t you get the feeling when you watch a show every week/every year faithfully that the characters feel like old friends? I’m just hoping I’m not going to have to scream at the TV for anything the writers pull! I need my Gibbs & DiNozzo every week! The others too of course, but those are my top two.  And this year, I’d love to see Jamie Lee Curtis return!!!! *fingers crossed*

5.   HAWAII FIVE-0 Returns – Dylan, who was introduced in ILLUSIONS as Brady’s partner, is a tad bit modeled after Alex O’Loughlin from this show. I mean, how could I not? O’Loughlin inspires a lot of naughty thoughts and various scenarios to put him in. Plus the finale, where he sees his mother! I have to hear the story behind how she’s back from the dead!

But back to the more writing time. Yes, it’ll be quiet around here and Dylan’s story will really take off…along with the other 3-4 WIPs that are all battling for time.  However, be on the look-out for these THREE titles coming soon from Decadent Publishing and me.

Feel free to let me know what shows/adventures you’re most looking forward to seeing this fall.

And what will you miss most about summer?

Reviews…food for thought…

by Kacey Hammell

Normally I don’t like to get on soapboxes and preach to anyone about anything. Everyone has opinions, the rights to their thoughts and beliefs. But a couple weeks ago, I had a few author friends contact me to read reviews they’d received and wanted my opinion.
Backing up a bit, I was a reviewer for three online romance review sites for about five years, which led me to working with/for publishers and brought me to writing. I’m not an expert, would never claim to be, but I think there’s a right way and a wrong way for reviewers and authors to handle reviews.

I do no respect a reviewer that doesn’t offer substantiated reasons for a low rating (for those that use cars, tongues, running shoes, umbrellas or popsicles – making sh*t up here so don’t go looking for any review sites that use these symbols for ratings LOL – or at least none I know of). Anyway, reviewers that praise a story in the written text but then give a story a two or three rating, doesn’t jive. If there’s positives tell me some of those, same with the negatives. And do it in a respectful, considerate way.

Authors reactions – unless a reviewer is giving away the biggest spoilers of your book or tearing it to shreds with demeaning wording or cutting you up as an author – take it in stride. Let the sting hurt, but then move on. Reviews are like opinions and everyone has them. Review sites / reviewers shouldn’t be publishing horrendous or demeaning reviews, at least any that are considered professional, and hopefully they’ll look for some of the positives in any story.

And to lambast a reviewer/site publicly doesn’t look good, nor is it professional. Which brings me back to the author pals who wrote me a few weeks ago to look at the reviews…Their first reaction was to scream and holler, have the reviews taken down, but while the reviews weren’t worded well and a couple had spoilers galore in it, it is just something they had to deal with.  I did suggest contacting the review coordinator of the site and request for some of the spoilers to be omitted – which they were which was nice – but for the content of the review itself, something to live with.
Not every reader/reviewer is going to love your work. It’s a shame because every one of my stories rocks!!! LOL Okay, to me they do but I do appreciate the reviewer feedback. As someone who has reviewed before, I always tried to word any negatives about a story so that the author would work on that area in the next book (especially if a series), so I look at reviews I receive in that light now. Yes, there have been times where any negatives are not explained, but I take the reviews as they come.

So read your reviews, if you wish, take it in stride but don’t react if it’s something negative. ALWAYS thank the reviewer/review site and move on. Keep it professional, to the point, and look back on the reviews occasionally and see what feedback you can use. It takes too much energy to bemoan negativity around you. Put some of that energy into your WIP. Works every time! *g*

Be true to your characters, stories, and yourself! In doing that, you’ve already succeeded!

Few things I have printed and framed over my desk…and keep me sane…

Modest Dreams & Awakenings

by Kacey Hammell

When I was growing up, people constantly asked what I wanted to be when I was older. Of course, it seemed to change every time – teacher, dancer, singer, and Equestrian rider – but as I got into my mid-teens one thing became clear. I just wanted to be a Mom. I didn’t care about anything else or that my friends wanted to be doctors, lawyers, movie stars, executives, I had my sights set on being a Mom.

And I’ve been blessed with three wonderful kids. Nothing matters more to me than my three rascally heartbreakers who tend to have me wrapped around their finger sometimes…don’t tell!

When I first wrote Awakenings (years ago), the sequel to Illusions (now available with Decadent Publishings), my oldest son was just 7 years old. TODAY…he turned 13 !!!!  To say the years have flown by is an understatement. And how mature he’s also become! When I was re-working Awakenings earlier this year in order to submit to DP, he was a great help when thinking from Roger Osborne’s POV.

Roger is a young boy, nine years old, whose mother is killed by his father. In Awakenings, Roger is hiding from his father, as well as the police, and Alicia is desperate to find him. I don’t want to give too much away, but Jacob was sitting beside me while redoing those scenes and really got into Roger’s mindset. Jacob let me know that the pain, fear, worry and doubt that Roger feels in the story was spot on, and off, in some places and I really found myself digging deeper into Roger than ever before.

So, today, as one of my baby boys turns 13, I wish him a very happy birthday and much love. Without his help, I don’t think I would have enjoyed revising Awakenings as much as I did. He’s my little man. I’m so proud of him! J
And I’m thrilled to say that my biggest dream, to just be a Mom, has definitely come true. It’s my favourite job!

Though unedited, I wanted to share a brief snippet of Roger Osborne, as we meet him in Awakenings.
Awakenings, Coming Soon with Decadent Publishing
Excerpt © Kacey Hammell, 2012

Cold, so cold.
Huddled behind the wall of his apartment in a secret room equipped with a pillow and blanket, some rations of food—crackers, nutrition bars and juice boxes of orange juice—Roger Osborne wrapped his arms around his body to keep himself warm. Though he had a blanket, he wasn’t sure he’d ever truly be warm again.
Tears ran down his cheeks. He closed his eyes and felt the sobs overtake his body. All he saw behind his eyelids was his mom’s body on the ground.
When his father started to pound on the door of their apartment, his mother had rushed him to her room where she had built the hidden room behind the wall. She’d given him strict orders to keep quiet and not come out for any reason.
The door could open from the outside by pushing firmly on the top right corner. Hinges were only seen from the inside and a chain kept the door locked from the inside. Anyone in the bedroom would never know the hidden room was there. His mother had been precise in her cuts in the wall to make the door and made sure it would never be noticeable.
When he heard the patio door bang open and his father’s voice bellow, his body shook and knew no matter what, he couldn’t let his father find him.

Heroines Seeking Justice

by Kacey Hammell

A lot of interviewers ask me what prompted me to write a hard-ass, tough, female lead Detective like Isabella Knowles in Illusions.  The idea for her character came to me during a dream and called to me. Yes, we authors do have voices in our heads that come to us whenever they choose to do so and we’re helpless not to listen.

But, in thinking of the long line of female detectives that I’ve enjoyed for years, some back into my childhood I thought I’d share the influences that might have contributed a little to Isabella.

First up, Cagney & Lacey – Tyne Daly & Sharon Glass. TV was a lot of fun back in the 80s. Cagney & Lacey aired from ’81 to ’88. I grew up enamored with this show and the idea to be a police officer or in some other area of law enforcement. Of course, as I got older, guns terrified me and I realized the job wasn’t as fun and exciting as TV made it seem. But Cagney & Lacey were two female detectives, who when I think back during a time when women were just beginning to take larger roles in many occupations that were usually domineered by men—especially for Lacey’s character who was also a mom and working in a dangerous profession full time. I loved that she could balance and pull off both.

Then there was Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote. Not a detective exactly, but damn her investigative instincts and nature were awesome to watch. On the air from 1984 to 1996, it was one of the best procedural dramas of all time. I loved Jessica’s grit, heart and spunk and it was just entertaining from start to finish.

Then I discovered JD Robb’s “In Death” series. Lt. Eve Dallas, Peabody, Mavis, Mira – all amazing women who give tough heroines a whole new meaning. From Eve’s struggles to her friendships with Mavis, Mira & Peabody, Eve is the epitome of tortured heroines and powerful detectives. Her story, the heart she tries to hid, crazily balancing her marriage with murder – it all draws the reader in and I know I’m compelled to read the books over and over. I’m helpless to inhale every new release within twenty-four hours.

Nowadays, I’m totally addicted to a lot of cop shows, some I record faithfully every week. Two of my absolute faves are …

Rizzoli & Isles, based from Tess Gerritsen’s stories, represents two strong women who work together, have become best friends and both have the need for justice. They don’t take anything for granted, balance crazy relationships (Rizzoli with her family!), and the need to connect with someone intellectually (Isles!). Plus, Maura Isles’ shoe collection is worthy of tuning in for too! LOL

SVU is a difficult show to watch at times. Especially now that Christopher Meloni (Stabler) is no longer on the show. Very sad indeed. The content/stories really hit you in the gut when watching. But it makes me appreciate my family, the lessons it teaches me and reminds me to keep my guard up in protecting my kids and never take anything for granted. Mariska Hargitay (Benson) is an amazing actress, who really makes her character believable. Since watching from the first episode back in 1999 (now in Season 13!!), the character has evolved into a multi-faceted, compelling woman who doesn’t just do her job, but does it with compassion, understanding and heroic.

Getting to know Kacey Hammell!

Hmm, some things about me that very few people or no one knows about me.  It’s hard to make a list since I’m pretty open about a lot of things, especially with blogging, facebooking, tweeting, interviewing…well you get the picture.

Number Eight…
I am greatly, seriously addicted to Shemar Moore (aka Derek Morgan on Criminal Minds).  I mean look at this pic of him…need I say more? Wednesday nights, for one hour—okay, I have the DVD seasons too, so whenever I want to watch—I’m glued to the TV and can’t be disturbed. It’sShemar& me time…

Number Seven…
All through high school, I was a legal secretary for a family law attorney. I met a guy and we moved away, and well, the rest they say is history.

Number Six…
I have the most horrible fear of snakes. Not a little fear, but a HUGE one. So bad that I can’t see a snake on tv without jumping on the sofa. I’ve had the same recurring nightmare for as long as I can remember, about being smothered by a snake. Not sure what age the nightmare started, and my brothers have sworn to hell and back they never bothered me with snakes when we were kids, but that nightmare is terrifying.

Number Five…
I inhale stories featuring ménage a trois. I need them like a kid needs candy. Gotta have them, in bulk, as often as possible. I’d never participate in one but I love them. Well okay, if Shemar Moore walked through the door and hubby said it was okay…

Anyway, moving on…

Number Four…
Ten years ago, my husband asked me to marry him in August and we were married in October. I organized, made centerpieces, had dresses fitted for Maid of Honour, flower girl and my mother, had all the suits for the men booked all myself, and the day was perfect. I’m hell on wheels when on deadline. *g*

Number Three…
Did I mention those ménage a trois stories?  I feel a sudden urge coming on to grab one from the pile.  Hubby would probably love it too, since I sometimes read them to him. He’s such a dear to be interested in what I’m interested in. *wink*

Number Two…
My Mom & my daughter are really my best friends. I grew up a Tomboy, played football/baseball and hung out with guys mainly and didn’t much care for the “girl” dramas. Even to this day, years after high school, I’m the same way.But now, I’d rather hang out with my mom and daughter than anyone (Hubby aside—for different reasons *g*).

Number One…
I’m a huge crier. From weddings to cute babies, to tearjerker books and movies, I cry a lot. I’m a huge sap.  Even during my TV shows, the waterworks just come as they may.  Biggest tearjerker movie for me is P.S. I Love You. Of course, the first time I ever watched it was about a week after losing my dad, so it was endless tears. But even to this day I cry through pretty much all of it.  TV Shows – even when someone is shot, in danger, killed or leaves a show, I’m bawling as if I’ve lost my dearest friend.  Even when a contestant wins a reality show, it’s like I’m a member of their darn family, I’m crying along with them.
So while I’m pretty tough when it comes to my family and kids, friends and will kick a$$e$ and take name for those near and dear to me and causes I believe in—I can cry an ocean.

Kacey Hammell's 10Q Tuesday!

How did you start your writing career?
I began in this business as a reviewer. I worked at an online site, created an Erotic Romance section when the site was primarily just Mainstream, did interviews, etc. I got to meet a lot of authors, work with them, enjoy hundreds of stories a month. I really loved it.   Soon thereafter, I started critiquing some author’s WIPs, doing some side-line editing, then it evolved into a business of editing more frequently and pushed reviewing back.  My husband started making the suggestions to write my own stories.  After months of listening to that, an idea came to me in a dream and I wrote it with 4 mths starting the next morning.  I quickly became addicted and wrote 5 stories within 2 years. Unfortunately, with my dad’s death, I had to put writing aside to concentrate on his businesses, family and have only recently picked up the pen again to “start over”.

Do you believe in ghosts?
Yes. My oldest brother passed away about a decade ago and I have seen him in windows, heard his words whispering through my mind during difficult times. There are also some interesting images within pictures of my children that give me pause.  There’s one specifically where there is a perfectly shaped angel over my two children’s shoulders when they were younger.  There are many spirits around us, IMO, angels watching over, taking care of their loved ones.  I’m definitely a believer.

What does your significant other and family think of your writing career?
My family has been wonderfully supportive. My oldest child, she’s 15, knows more about my writing than my boys do, and she thinks it’s incredible.  All of my kids love books and reading, and have even written some great stories of their own in school. Perhaps one day, one of them will pick up a pen and write in the future. *g*
And of course, my husband, who claims it’s all because of his nudging and nagging that got me writing.  Yes, he’s like a pimp, ROFL, always telling people about my work and that he started it all.
Now, if only he’d put in some of the long hours for me!!!

Do you use a pen name? If so, how did you come up with it?
Yes I do. Kacey is a mash of my real name as well as my Mom’s. Hammell – though it was just something that I discovered when searching Irish last names  (I think the flaming red hair in my pix on my site give it away that I’m Irish) is the real eye-opener. Though I found Hammell (actually spelled with only 1 L, but I liked it better with 2) during that search for Irish last names, I later come to find out, that I have some ancestors who originated in Ireland with the last name.  Going back about 5 generations, the name exists, spelled as O’Hamill).  It’s quite a “woo-woo” thing to know that a name was chosen just because of its Irish connection, but then to find out that it’s actually connected to me specifically … well, it still gives me freaking chills !!!  LOL

Do you listen to music while writing? If so what?
Every time I sit to write there’s music playing. I know many authors that can only write in the absolute quiet, without kids around, or distractions. But I find that I sometimes need to have the kids around me as well when writing.  Sometimes the silence is too much. I have written thousands of words when my kids are at home, watching tv, playing games or whatever. It’s an odd thing, IMO, but it works.  If the kids aren’t home, then it’s music constantly. Sometimes I just turn the radio on but for the most part it’s my ensemble of different types of music. I love Daughtry, AC/DC, Adele, Hedley, Michael Buble, Andrea Bocelli, Simple Plan, Carrie Underwood, Maroon 5, Enrique Iglesias, Johnny Reid, Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, Lady Antebellum, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Eminem … it’s a strange mix that is always on the MP3 player/mixed CDs.

What was the scariest moment of your life?
There were two actually, and very close together, that really scared the hell out of me. First was July 2007 when my father passed away unexpectedly. Though grieving, it was in the back of my mind as to how I would live without the man that taught me so much, was my savior and protector, who loved me unconditionally. And I was filled with worry “how do I take care of Mom without Dad”.   It’s difficult to lose anyone in your life but it’s so scary to have a parent ripped away from you, no matter what age.
Secondly, September 2007, when my oldest son (age 8 then) collapsed at school and was rushed to the hospital. He was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes that day. He’d shown signs of fatigue, etc., and had a Dr. appt coming up the next day, but his body couldn’t wait.  It’s terrifying to get a phone call that your child has been rushed to a hospital, and more so, when he’s diagnosed with an illness that you’re not familiar with and that he’ll have forever.  It’s also difficult to feel so helpless. I felt incredibly helpless that day to help him, get his body reacting positively and “cure” him myself, as any parent wants to heal their child. It was hard to watch him suffer and know that he’d have some hardships in the coming years.   But amazingly, he’s adjusted to things a lot easier than I did. While scary as hell, my son also became my hero during that time, pushing through the first difficult months and now 4 years later, he’s having the time of his life.

Tell us about your next release.
Illusions, coming soon at Decadent Publishing *g*
What can an author say about the first characters she ever wrote and have such a tight hold on my heart?
Isabella & Brady are both determined, strong, difficult and sexy. Neither wants commitments in their life outside of their jobs but love doesn’t have a timeline, does it?  Illusions is a very spicy Romantic Suspense that is filled with a lot of tension, a killer on the loose and a romance that will pull readers in.  Plus, Brady is a seer and uses his gift for good. Sparks fly whenever Isabella & Brady are together.

Is there a writer you idolize? If so who?
There are many that I love to read – Sara Brookes, JD Robb, Suzanne Brockmann, Patricia A. Rasey, Lauren Dane, Lori Foster, John Grisham, Kathy Reichs, and Maya Banks.
But the one I most idolize and am standing in line at a brick & mortar bookstore for on the day of each release…Jaci Burton. I absolutely LOVE her work. Every piece she’s ever written is on my shelf and there are times I feel like a stalker! LOL  I visit her site a couple times a week for any updates, follow her twitter & Facebook pages…I know I can’t be the only one!
I’ve read her for nearly a decade now, we met back when I reviewed her work, and have no plans of stopping. And I’ve been lucky enough to meet her at a couple RT Conventions in the past…nothing like meeting your Idol!  Very few others come close to writing romances like Jaci does.

Beatles or Monkees? Why?
OMG my folks played both quite often when I was growing up, plus Elvis, Rolling Stones, Motown. You name it, I think my parents listened to it.
But I’d have to say the Monkees. I mean, how can you not love guys who just write friendly, carefree lyrics like:
Hey, Hey, we’re the Monkees/And People say we monkey around/But we’re too buys singing/To put anybody down
I think some artists today that like to poke fun/ridicule other artists in their music could learn a thing or two from the past. And people around the world in general.  The Monkees just seemed to write “feel good and fun” songs.

What makes you happy?
My children’s smiles. Knowing they are happy, living life to the fullest, experiencing new things is all I need.  Plus, my immediate family around me fills me with so much joy, it’s incredible.
