I’m Liking Shifters!

By Eva Lefoy

Ever since writing Darkest Magic for the Decadent Beyond Fairtytales line, I’m really liking reading and writing shifters even more. I used to think, well, that they were all the same, but really they’re not. A lot of variation exists in the genre.
When I first started reading them, I ran across a lot of douchbag alphas. I mean take the usual Harlequin Presents guys and times them by three. They came across as, “I’m mating you and that’s that. Get over it. You’re mine.” Being a modern girl, this line of reasoning made me say, “Whaaaa? No. Uh-unh.” And to tell the truth, it really put me off them for a while.
But the genre has evolved. There are alpha males and beta male; mates and ménages; women and men in mixed roles; and even, I’ve found a bit of humor. I tend to think the change has come about due to the Urban Fantasy genre. Those books definitely have their own take on vampires, werewolves, zombies, demons, and it isn’t always pretty or glamorous. But sometimes, it’s simply funny as heck. It was as though it gave the whole paranormal genre a shot in the arm – and opened up the flood gates to anything goes.
I like anything goes and I like shifters because you can truly make up your own story. In Darkest Magic, I was (loosely) following a storyline written a long time ago. By giving it a more contemporary feel, I created a unique slant, and a shifter tale that fits in nicely to the anything goes genre.

Eva

Here’s more about Darkest Magic:
Nik Epperstein’s alpha lost his mate two years ago and took an evil witch as his new bride. Ever since then, Eli’s leadership has become violent, bordering on insane. When Eli attacks him, Nik’s healing powers mysteriously vanish. He can’t defend himself, nor protect the wolf he secretly loves. Only through the help of a foul-mouthed witch and an overly-dramatic dwarf will he save her – but their assistance comes at a price.
Caroline has tried for two years to lure Nik into her bed and can’t understand his hesitation.  After all, she senses their mating bond loud and clear. Then Nik disappears. She confronts her father who tells her Nik is dead, and she’s next on his chopping block.  Without Nik to protect her, she flees the pack and is kidnapped by a man half her size.
Reunited at last, the young wolves have one last chance to ignite their bond. But love must wait when battle looms. Eli and his wife attack, and aren’t above using dirty tricks to win. If Nik and Caroline survive the battle, the dwarf and his wife will require them to make a promise that will change their lives forever…

Excerpt:

“You’re done, Nikko. I don’t need you anymore.”
He flinched at the hand clapped on his shoulder. Though they’d been close as brothers while the alpha’s first mate was alive, things had deteriorated steadily since her death. This was probably the first time he had simply touched him and not hit him in over two years. It struck him as weirdly unreal.
“You’re out of the pack. Get your things and go.”
His brain went into freefall. This makes no sense. “But…I’m your beta.”
Were. I don’t need a second anymore, Nikko. Petrina’s child will be my successor. He will rule by my side.”
A pack without a beta? Who had heard of such a thing? Or did Eli fear he’d one day try and take control, if things got bad enough with the Eli and Petrina circus? Oh hell, that’s it. He’s worried about maintaining his power. He knew in his heart the alpha was right. If he had the balls, he’d challenge the alpha and get it done and over with. An even more insane Eli was the biggest threat the pack faced. They’d unravel bit by bit from the inside, not be done in by an attack from a neighboring pack. Still, he found himself shaking his head, his loyalty as a beta too ingrained to simply let go, his allegiance to the pack too solid to let him up and walk away. Besides, he was a born follower, not a leader. He had no ambition to run the pack himself. Eli had to listen to reason. “He’s not even born yet. Without a full-grown second, the pack will be vulnerable, unstable. You need me—now more than ever.”
“Untrue. Petrina has assured me we will be safe, and these men have already sworn allegiance to my son. I’ve got it covered, bro.”
A slippery feeling crept up his spine as he risked a glance at her malachite wolf eyes. The change in their leader had started when he’d mated her two years ago, bringing her into the pack suddenly and unannounced. An outsider, no one knew of her or the pack she claimed to hail from. Though her unknown origins weren’t a serious problem, her demeanor had always made him wary. He trusted her about as much as a knife at his throat. But his allegiance continued unbroken, for better or for worse. “Look, if you want me to swear a pledge as well…?”
“Not necessary. You’re gone, Nikko. Time for you to get on your way.” The wolves padded forward silently to hover at the alpha’s side.
He wasn’t scared by the obvious act of showmanship. He’d faced off against most of these wolves before, knew their strengths and weaknesses. But the fact his own Alpha thought he needed them here caught his attention. Eli was the biggest wolf in the pack. He didn’t require the other wolves’ protection. Therefore, they were there to convince him to go peacefully. Why?
Nik sniffed the air and caught a hint of scent, one he’d kill to protect. Caroline. From the faraway quality of her smell, Caroline was currently at the compound. With her father acting strangely, was she safe there any longer? Worry skittered through him. If Eli was crazy enough to make his as-yet-unborn child beta, what would he do to his daughter by his former mate? He raised his eyes to his alpha, his protective instincts for Caroline surging to the surface so fast and hard he could barely contain them. He’d touched her, damn near held her in his arms and kissed her, a few hours ago. The memory burned through him with a new intensity that wrenched his heart.
Eli’s nostrils flared, his pupils glinting with the golden hue of his wolf’s rising ire. He wasn’t one to stand for even an iota of defiance.
He gritted his teeth and all but thrust the unspoken claim to her resting in his heart into the open. “What about Caroline?”
A flash of cold, dark ice went through Eli’s eyes and Nik’s concern for her welfare ratcheted to stark fear. He instantly knew her fate would be death. The alpha would kill his unborn son’s only rival to ensure his complete, everlasting rule. His stomach twisted into a knot as a strong hit of adrenaline flushed him hot.
“She won’t be needed either.”

When Dead isn’t Really Dead, You’ve got to Worry!

Available HERE
By Eva Lefoy

What’s more dangerous than leaving Earth, joining the military and hunkering down in on a rocky base far from home? Why, Martians of course!
And with Martians, it’s not the ones you see that are the problem. It’s the ones you can’t see that cause all the trouble.
Everybody knows Martian are green. They’re easy to spot in a crowd. Or they would be, if they were still alive. But in the near future, and even now, today, we see no signs of life on Mars. In reality, we send space crafts to the lonely planet to examine the surface for signs of water and other proof life did once exist. In my science fiction series, Martians did once live on Mars. There are even dead Martians stored in scientific vaults, silent testimony that the once proud warrior race lived. After ravaging our galaxy and points beyond, the Martians died out. Maybe their planet ran out of water. Maybe they suffered a plague. Whatever the reason, a dead Martian is a good Martian, to most of the galaxy.
Unless you happen to tinker with their DNA.
DNA from a Martian host inserted into a human subject results in some pretty scary consequences. Over time, the Martian DNA takes over the “weaker” human body and mind, and seeks to program the human host with a new Martian agenda. Talk about trouble! How do you fight an enemy you can’t even see?
Maybe, you become one of them.

THE TROUBLE WITH MEMORIES

Lieutenant Lucy Borasco has her phase pistol ready and her ex-boyfriend in her sights. She has every intention of making him pay for choosing his career over her. But she hadn’t factored in a Martian sneak invasion, Cal’s incessant need to save the universe, or the risk of permanent damage to her complexion. Getting Cal back will cost her more than she thinks, leaving her changed forever.
Captain California Sykes’s memories are gone, his career is in ruins, and his ex-girlfriend nearly kills him with a kiss. Can he overcome the Martian invasion, save the rest of the team and win Lucy back again in the process? Or will his seat-of-the-pants plans and the canned fish rations cost him everything he holds dear, including his sanity?

Excerpt:
Lucy stood outside the door to the viewport room, her body braced and stiff, as if her life might end the second the door opened. In a way, it would. In a few short hours, she’d turn and walk away from the shattered remnants of her dreams. The person who’d ruined her life was Captain California Sykes and in under five seconds, she’d set eyes on him for the very last time.
Her schedule pad beeped, and she made the mistake of glancing down to see the date: February 14th. Fragg almighty, how had she done this to herself? Throughout the weeks of careful planning she hadn’t noticed her planet off-date was freakin’ Valentine’s Day? Their fave holiday, while a couple.Holy dwarf star.
She groaned and curled her fingers around the tray so hard they went numb. Just get this over with. He’s made it clear he’s no longer interested. He still thinks his career comes first.
In fact, he’d made his decision obvious the first time she’d been ordered to bring him breakfast three weeks ago. Giddy with excitement at seeing him in the flesh so long after the Mars Mission, she’d traipsed into the room floating on moonbeams. He’d stared at her, frowned, immediately turned his head, and ignored her, shoulders set in a “don’t bother me” position. Her heart had fallen faster than space dust into a black hole’s horizon. “Way to shoot me down, space jock,” she’d hissed and slunk from the room, heart burning from his rejection. Due to some horrid twist of fate, she’d been assigned to bring him his breakfast every day since. And every fragging day, nothing had changed.
Shoving the heartache into the background she lifted her chin and angled her access badge towards the door’s scanner. The heavy barrier whished open without hesitation, giving her a good view of Cal’s backside. The side she’d seen the most of in the last three weeks as he’d continually ignored her. She clenched her jaw and stepped inside.
Captain Sykes stood in the same position she found him every morning when she delivered his breakfast—next to the high windowed wall watching the sleek faster-than-light fighters he’d once flownroar past on their training runs, engines glowing in the early twin-sun dawn.
As usual, he did not acknowledge her arrival. Didn’t twitch a muscle anywhere on his rigid frame. However, his eagle-like eyes followed every dip and swoop the fighters made as though he could insinuate his consciousness into one of their cockpits by sheer force of will and fly again, if only he concentrated hard enough.
He’d looked at her with the same intensity long ago. But maybe eight months in medi-bay changed a man for the worse. She hadn’t expected him to stick to his guns and choose his career over her. But, he had. He’d never shown even a glimmer of attraction for her—no matter how she’d tried to entice him and remind him of what they’d once had with her dress, her voice, or her body—he only seemed interested in those fragging ships. Long-standing frustration cinched a knot in her stomach. Anger settled over her shoulders like a mantle, causing them to tense. This is it. He’s obviously made his choice. Now I’m making mine.
She glared at his reconstituted mashed potato, sauerkraut and bratwurst breakfast, then at him. How in the hell could he live on such a rotten diet and expect to see the ass end of sixty anyway? Not that she should care.He could grow fatter than a gas ox, she didn’t care.
“Your breakfast.” More quietly, she hissed, “Sir.”
When he didn’t respond—not even his usual half-hearted grunt of a greeting—she stepped closer. “I said, your breakfast, sir. Where would you like me to put it?” Her teeth ground together and her mind instantly supplied a few suggestions.
The fighters made another pass and he seemed to sway in their wake. In fact, he closed his eyes as if savoring the moment. Lost in some invisible lover’s embrace like he’d once been lost in hers.
Frozen comet tails. That does it.
“How about here?” She didn’t merely drop the platter, she slammed it downward, adding an extra helping of gravity to the potatoes, mustard, and ketchup, sothe tray crashed to the floor and sent ceramic shards scattering. The tray’s destruction echoed off the windows, crooning sweet vengeance to her ears.

What’s more American than Rodeo?

Today being September 11th, I thought I’d frame my post around a patriotic theme. With the Fourth of July picnics all done, the kids all back in school and fall upon us, it’s time to turn on the TV and watch some sports. Baseball has started and football has started too. But I’m here to talk about another American sport – or rather the U.S. version of it – bull riding.
In American bull riding, the rider must stay atop the bucking bull for eight seconds. He is not allowed to touch the bull, the rope or himself with his free hand. The rider wins points for his ability to stay in control during the ride. The bulls are assigned points as well for their agility, power and speed. This sport truly pits the human against the animal’s raw natural power.
No wonder bull riding has been called the deadliest 8 seconds in sports!
In Perfect Ride, by myself and Shiloh Saddler, the lead character and bull riding champion, Garrett Anderson, picks a dangerous bull to ride, hoping to gain maximum points and secure his win and this is what happens during his 8-second ride:

Garrett bit down on the mouth guard and squeezed the bull tightly with his legs. The gate swung open and Spitfire didn’t move. He acted like he’d already expended all his energy acting up in the chute. Come on. You’re supposed to be one nasty bucker.
The gateman closed the gate and Garrett had to reset. Freddy stood near him ready to offer any assistance. Garrett cussed under his breath and rewrapped his hand.
“Come on, Spitfire, it’s time for both of us to go to work.”
Garrett slapped the bull’s side, getting his attention. He nodded again to the gateman and this time they burst out of the chute, but he couldn’t spur until the bull settled his footing. When he did, Spitfire charged and weaved down the arena snorting and thrashing his head along the way. Every toss of the massive head brought those creamy-clear horns dangerously close to his thighs and his guts. Garrett’s heart settled squarely in his throat and he struggled to breathe. Holding tight to the rope, and squeezing his leg muscles until he ached, he felt like he was being dragged by a runaway train. He wished the bullfighters would come in and shoot the crazy animal.
The bull didn’t slow down or change course. The steel barriers loomed closer and closer and closer. Should I bail? If he jumped, he’d have no chance at the money. He gripped the rope harder, his knuckles turning clear, and hung on as Spitfire crashed into the heavily reinforced gate head on, horns clanging against the metal nearly pitching his rider off over his head. Garrett felt his arm pulled out of its socket and pain engulfed his shoulder. Then Spitfire spun and rammed Garrett’s leg against the gate. Garrett heard the loud crack over the roar of the crowd, felt the sharp stab of pain race up his thigh hard and fast to jolt his brain. More adrenaline flooded his system and the pain went away. His leg dangled uselessly against Spitfire’s side. Without it to help keep himself upright, he was entirely at the bull’s mercy. Garrett’s already hard breathing quickened. He felt the sickening surge of combined pain and panic clawing at his awareness. Just don’t get tangled up in the rope. With his broken leg, he wouldn’t be able to stand and would be whipped around like a rag doll. Now he could only grip the rope tighter and pray. His whole bull-riding career flashed before eyes going all the way back to mutton busting. A sour taste rose into his mouth. Was this going to be his last ride?
The bull snorted and bucked into a right-hand spin. The change of momentum threatened to push him into the well. Then he heard it. One of the sweetest sounds he’d ever heard or would ever hear. The buzzer sounded and Garrett let go of the rope with relief, crumpling to the ground. He laid there unable to move. With the ride completed, awareness of the pain in his leg took over. It was impossible for him to stand now, much less run. He gritted his teeth and attempted to crawl away from the bull, the pain so intense it felt like his leg was on fire. He finally gave up, crumpling into the dirt.

Tune in to the PBR on your local CBS Sports channel and see for yourself how nail-bitingly long 8 seconds can really be! http://www.pbr.com/en/bfts/tv-schedule#/bfts_television_broadcasts
If you’re feeling patriotic, they play the national anthem at the start of every night/day’s competition.  Here is a video of one such anthem, and she does a pretty good job!

Magic and Fairy Tales in Darkest Magic

Available HERE
From Decadent’s new Beyond Fairytales line….

Magic and fairy tales go together like vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. It’s a natural combination that’s been tried and true for so long everybody accepts it as fact. Just like good and evil. That’s definitely a big fairy tale staple. I decided to shake and stir, and combine them both in DarkestMagic.
In Darkest Magic, there is a good witch named Estrella, married to a dwarf named Otis. Dwarves are another fairy tale character we often see and quite handy to have around most of the time! Unlike trolls, who generally are no fun at all. But there are no trolls in this story! There is also an evil witch named Petrina. She’s married to the alpha male of the werewolf pack.
The what? Yes, I blended the modern day concept of werewolves with magic for this tale and here’s why. Some say that it’s magic that makes a werewolf. Others say it’s a virus, something you can catch. Which one is true? I don’t really know. Do you?
There are lots of werewolf romance books out there, but how many of them boast a dwarf sidekick and a battle to keep the forest safe from evil? If it sounds like I’m a bit of an environmentalist at heart, you’re right. I’m currently making hiking plans for the weekend! In regards the dwarf, I simply had to include one since there was one in the original Grimm fairy tale my story is based on, and I am totally head over heels for Tyrion in Game of Thrones. (Who can blame me, really? He’s so awesome!) More on dwarves later…
I look forward to readers’ comments on how well my wolves and witches interact. It was difficult at first to re-frame the story in modern terms, but once I got going it all came together quite well. Remember, magic and fairy tales CAN include werewolves. Like that one peeking over your shoulder right now…
Oops!
Just kidding!

Darkest Magic:
Nik Epperstein’s alpha lost his mate two years ago and took an evil witch as his new bride. Ever since then, Eli’s leadership has become violent, bordering on insane. When Eli attacks him, Nik’s healing powers mysteriously vanish. He can’t defend himself, nor protect the wolf he secretly loves.

If Nik and Caroline survive the battle, the dwarf and his wife will require them to make a promise that will change their lives forever…

EXCERPT:
A cool wind whispered along her bare arms and she hugged herself, suddenly chilled. No good would come of this night, her senses screamed. That, and run. But to where? From whom?
Another snap of a twig and she spun, only to come face to face with her father. “Dad? What are you doing out here?”
“Caroline.” His eyes looked weird, glossy and red.
She took a step back, fighting the urge to flee, which would only entice the wolf in him to give chase. “Are you following me?”
“Yes. As a matter of fact, I am. I have something to discuss with you.”
A far away howl reached her ears. Long and sorrowful, it wrung her heart, heightening her senses. Every nerve on alert, she glanced toward the source of the sound and then focused on her father. “What do you want?”
“I’m afraid since Petrina is pregnant with our son, she sees no further need to have you around.”
Petrina, again. Had her father forgotten all about her mother? He acted as though he lived only to please his new wife these days. The thought he’d forgotten his first mate for love of this creepy one sickened her. She wanted Petrina out of the pack, out of their lives, forever. “What does she have to do with anything?”
Another howl carried on the wind, and her gut churned. It sounded like a wolf in pain, and the pitch and tone triggered her wolf’s anxiety. When it howled in return, the name bubbled up to the surface with shocking surety. Nik. He’s hurt.
Her father closed in, not making any quick moves, but the tension in his body threatening nonetheless. “She’s concerned about your presence here, Caroline. If you’re not mated to a pack member, you need to go. Your bloodline can serve no purpose but to dilute my power.”
She blinked, not certain she’d heard him correctly. Her father’s words made no sense. When had he become so political—and with his own family members? “Papa, you know Nik is my mate. Always has been. There’s no one else in the pack I could ever care for. Where is Nik? Let me go to him. We can settle this all tonight.”
“Nik is gone, honey.”
“Gone?” Her arms trembled, this time not from the cold. “What do you mean? He’s coming back, isn’t he?”
Her father didn’t speak but hell seemed to stir in his eyes as he hovered over her. “No.”

Perfect Ride by Eva Lefoy and Shiloh Saddler - a GLBT Western Romance

When I told Shiloh that I was writing a bull riding story she got really excited. She grew up on a ranch and is a bona fide cowgirl. Myself, not so much. I grew up in ag country, but my dad was a hydroelectric mechanic. So when I turned the story in to her for a beta read, things got ugly fast. And I do mean ugly. I believe her exact words were, “You don’t know anything at all about bull riding, do you?”
Ouch! Lucky for me, Shiloh is somewhat of a PBR expert – she even dragged me to a bull riding event here at our local arena. Boy, did I ever feel out of place. Yes, we have county fairs here and yes, I’ve been bulls up close, but this event was completely not my sandals-and-socks wearing style. I found myself quickly overwhelmed by the noise in the arena, (it was held inside), the craziness of crowd, and the shocking willingness of the bull riders to rattle death’s doorknob for eight seconds of fame. Were they feeling lucky? Heck, I don’t know. I saw one guy hauled off in a stretcher, but still alive. Lucky means different things to different people I guess.

Turns out I’m a lot more squeamish than Shiloh!
After that first read-through, a collaboration was born. Shiloh keeps the bull shit from being bullshit, and I plot out the smexy. And the crazy clowns. I just can’t help it. I seem to need a little humor in everything I do.
Shiloh just sent me the corrected version of Book II. She has one more bull riding scene to re-write and I have to fix a weird passage or two, but it’s mostly done. By the way, get your MM smexy in Book I, because Book II is M/F and Book III will be a M/F/M ménage.

More details soon!

Blurb:
Professional bull rider Garrett Anderson lives for the next town, the next trophy and his next ride. When he rolls into Sheridan, Wyoming, the last thing he expected was to meet a cowboy like Cole—a man who corrals his heart and leaves him aching for a love he never realized he’d been missing.
Surrounded by hate, Cole Richards wasn’t prepared for Garrett’s passion or the longing their night together leaves him with. But when he’s shot, and stuck in his hospital bed, Cole watches every second of Garrett’s disastrous ride, and is heartbroken when the battered and bruised bull rider leaves town.
Attacked again and knee-deep in trouble, Cole wants only Garett at his side. But can his bull rider trade fame and fortune for a lifetime with his one perfect ride?

Excerpt:
Garrett eased his big frame out from behind the stationary table. “Well, I’m game. I’ve been sittin’ on too many tame ones lately. Could use a little excitement.” His sizzling look said he wasn’t talking about bulls. “You gotta head back to work?” He stretched, flexing his chest as he raised his arms and clasped his hands over head.
Cole visually traced the outline of every curved, solid muscle as it moved under his shirt, wondering how they’d feel if he rubbed against them. He hoped he’d find out before this rodeo ended. He shook his head. “Not till after dinner. I have the night shift tonight.”
“Well, don’t that suck. First night here and all.” Garrett put his arms down and tossed his empty plate in the trailer’s tiny sink.
Cole stood, hung his hat on a peg, and ran his fingers through his hair. It stood up in little sweat curls. Time for a shower. “It does. But I gotta spell the boss’s son. He just got back from Hawaii.”
“Hmm.” Garrett managed to prowl across the distance between the sink and the table, though it was only a couple of feet. When he reached Cole, he ran a finger down the placard of his snap-front plaid shirt. “I was in Hawaii, too. Didn’t see you there.”
“I didn’t go. I take care of Spitfire stateside. The boss’s son takes care of him if they fly.” His gaze snagged on the man’s Adam’s apple before lifting higher. The smooth burnt caramel color of his skin was shiny with sweat. It was hot in the trailer. He really ought to open a window. Later. Right after he licked him clean.
“And who….” Garrett moved his hand lower and lower. It rode the length of his shirt before running over his belt buckle. He didn’t pause but slid the hot caress right on down. “Takes care of you?”
“Nobody.” His whisper came out raw, filled with more need than he’d intended to show. But hell, it had been a good nine months since…. No. He didn’t want to think about Cash right now. Not with a man as hot as Garrett Anderson reaching below the beltline.
“Now that’s a damn shame.”
The heat of Garrett’s breath fanned over his lips as his fingers reached the bulge in his pants, traced along it, and palmed the entire hardening length.
He groaned as Garrett cupped him firmly. His hips automatically pressed forward, urging his cock into Garrett’s palm. He wanted to come right then and there. “Jesus.”
“No, sir. Name’s Garrett. Garrett Anderson, and I don’t mean for you to forget it.”
He whined when Garrett’s mouth closed over his. God he wanted to see this man naked. Right here, right now, in his shabby old trailer. This bull rider would be the best thing he’d ever had in here. He placed a hand on the back of Garrett’s head and crushed their mouths together, hungry for the man’s sweet cornbread and barbecue sauce taste. Most of the men he’d kissed tasted like dust and smelled like cows. But Garrett’s mouth was honeyed heaven.
Garrett grasped his ass roughly, slid his hands down the cleft, and cupped just behind his balls. He snugged their bodies together and lifted Cole tight against him. Their cocks abraded, sparking heat inside jeans threatening to melt the fabric. He broke the kiss long enough to ask, “Got a bed?”
