Summer Reading With The Black Hills Wolves

 By Dena Garson

Do you remember hanging out by the pool or the lake or even on your back porch during the summer and enjoying a little sun? There may have been a radio playing in the background. Perhaps a jug of ice cold lemonade next to you. But here was definitely a book in your hand.
I didn’t get very many of those, but boy, I remember them!
Recently I was lucky enough to find a killer deal on a vacation rental so I drove my boys to one of the beaches in Florida for a weekend getaway. It was great!!  Just to be clear, this was no luxury vacation - there were no waiters to bring me snacks or fruity drinks and certainly no cabana boys to rub suntan lotion on my back. But I had two days of warm sunshine (we’ve had nothing but rain for a month at home!!), white sand, salty air, the soothing sounds of pounding waves, and enough entertainment to keep both of my boys out of trouble. And as I was soaking up the delights of Mother Nature, I consumed several books that had been languishing on my to-be-read bookcase. It was great!!
I’d forgotten what it was like to check out from my daily life and just relax.
If you manage to find a weekend or a week to relax and need reading material have I got a list for you!
Earlier this year, the Black Hills Wolves hit the bookshelves. As of this week, the series has over twenty books. With so many authors contributing to the line, each book is unique and wonderful yet pulls from a central story. There is something for everyone!
Rebecca Royce’s book, Wolf’s Return, started the series.  My book, Your Wild Heart, is number fourteen and came out in April. Here’s a glimpse into Your Wild Heart….

Blurb:
Wildlife biologist, Isabelle Acker, meets sexy park ranger, Wyatt Powell. His Wolf sits up and takes notice of her, but when he learns why she came to the park, he becomes wary of her intentions. After all, as far as the general population knows, there are no wolves in the Black Hills.
Ordered by his Alpha to keep an eye on the smoking-hot biologist, Wyatt finds it difficult to keep his hands to himself. He wants to possess her, to share everything about his life, but that might endanger the Tao Pack. But the attraction proves too great and, unable to deny his Wolf, he takes her with a passion he didn’t know he possessed.
However, their sexual bliss is short-lived, and on the night of the full moon, more than one secret is revealed. When all is said and done, they must each decide—is what they have between them true love or just hot sex?

Excerpt:
From the shadows of the surrounding foliage, Wyatt Powell watched the slip of a woman move about her campsite with ease. The business card she had left with the girls at the ranger office read, Dr. Isabelle Acker, Wildlife Biologist. It seemed, she was used to camping outdoors.
But even if she had been camping for over five years, it was damn foolish of her to be out here alone.
Normally, he wouldn’t have paid much attention, but when he’d overheard the girls saying she was well known for her study of wolves, he’d been compelled to investigate.
Everyone knew there were no wolves in the Black Hills.
For generations, his pack had cultivated that belief. And in truth, there were no wolves. At least not what one would call a “normal” wolf. Wolf shifters were a whole other matter.
So, what brought Dr. Acker here?
She’d set up her camp in a secluded spot, well away from the established sites. Perhaps she wanted privacy. But for what?
The longer he watched, the more fascinated he became by her. It wasn’t because she seemed at ease in the outdoors. Nor was it just a physical attraction. Sure, she was pretty for a human but not in a remarkable way. She was an average height with an athlete’s build. Her plain brown hair had been pulled into a simple ponytail, but it did glitter a bit when she stepped into patches of sunlight.
Yet something about her had captured his interest. Both man and beast wanted to learn more.
He was about to retreat into the woods when he saw her gather a towel and a few bathing items and head to the nearby stream. His conscience argued he should leave and allow her some privacy, but the bulge behind his zipper insisted on following her. Part of him wanted to know how much of a nature lover she was.
Like a deer, she picked her way over the rocks until she found a spot next to the river. Before sitting, she slowly turned her head in both directions scanning the area.
Wyatt had been taught by his Sioux grandfather the value of patience when tracking prey. Or a foe. Despite his base attraction, he had yet to determine which she might be.

You Can Have Too Much Wildlife

 By Dena Garson

When I began working on Your Wild Heart, I realized my heroine, a Wildlife Biologist, would be spending a lot of time outdoors. It made me stop and think about how a single woman, working alone, might go about keeping herself safe and, quite frankly, reasonably comfortable.
I’ve camped outdoors a few times, but each time I was with family – never alone. It seems to me there are quite a few factors to consider. First – safety – not only of yourself but also your stuff. As a scientist, I would think she would have a few pieces of equipment that she would need to secure. If nothing else, she’d have a laptop to record data. Not that pen and paper wouldn’t work! But, we’re going to assume she is a modern day gal and has a reasonable appreciation of gadgets.
Since she planned to be in the area for about a week, I would think she’d want a comfortable place to sleep and take her meals. Someplace free of bugs and slithering reptiles. In my book, that rules out the hard ground.
From personal experience, I’ve learned that keeping food not only stored properly (i.e. cold) but also free of bugs and wildlife, is a challenge in the woods. Tossing a plastic bag of chips or hamburger buns on the ground –even in a tent– doesn’t work. At least not for long.
After researching camping supplies I came to the conclusion that if my girl frequently made these types of trips she would probably make the investment in a small travel trailer. Nothing large or overly fancy. It would definitely need to be something she could setup and maintain on her own but also provide a degree of protection from the elements, wildlife and, quite frankly, from other people.
It’s amazing how many options are out there! You can get something that sleeps one or two all the way up to eight or ten!
By the time I found the perfect vehicle for my heroine, I was in the mood to go look at the darn things myself. I have two boys and the idea of having something to take weekend trips to the lake during the summer holds a lot of appeal. Now if I could only win that big lottery…
