A Fan’s Take on Art and Theft

 By Libby Waterford

I think all fiction is a form of fan fiction. We may not all be channeling our inner Stephanie Meyer and turning our stories into cultural touchstones, but we’re all fans of something and often seeing more of what we love is what drives authors to the keyboard.
Love Unlocked, a contemporary romantic suspense novel about an art thief and a painter, was inspired in many ways by my early exposure to Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief. In this film, Cary Grant is his impeccably suave self as the retired jewel thief The Cat, Grace Kelly is at her most luminous, and the French Riviera has never seemed as exciting or sexy. Love Unlocked takes place on a different coast—that of Central California. The thief this time is a brunette with a penchant for paintings and her reluctant partner in crime is a brilliant but blocked artist who will do anything to keep her within arm’s reach and out of harm’s way. My characters, setting, and plot are completely different, but I hope the spirit of fun and glamour carries through.
Love Unlocked is on sale for 99 cents through April 3rd, and it’s also going to be available in print from Amazon.com.
If you’ve ever wanted to spend some time with art-loving thieves and thief-loving artists, I hope you’ll pick up Love Unlocked, and look for my next contemporary erotic romance, Sweet Imperfection, out next week on 3/31.
