What Makes a Hero?

Since 9/11, there’s been a trend in the US to call all first responders: police, firefighters, EMTs, and of course military men and women, heroes. There’s no question that they are, based on the simple fact that they put their lives on the line for others. But heroism can have deeper, less obvious meanings as well, and I wanted to show some of those with Sig Nowicki, the hero of Thankfulfor You, the Mr. November story in the Calendar Men series.
Sig is a disabled veteran, returning home with a bad leg, missing fingers, a scarred face and a missing eye. That might sound like overkill for the hero (there’s that word again) of a romance novel, but Sig manages to work with his scars. That’s every bit as much heroism as the fact that he was wounded saving a fellow soldier. He still has insecurities, of course, but he doesn’t let himself hide from the world. He works on rebuilding his life every single day.
In Elsie Jordan, pet shop owner, Sig recognizes a fellow wounded soul, even though all of her scars are on the inside. Even though he’s desperately attracted to Elsie, he also wants to help her work through her issues, even if it means giving her up. That’s heroism of a whole different kind. Finally, he works past his own fears and dedicates his time to helping others in bad situations, even agreeing to pose for a benefit calendar. Sig’s not just a military hero.  Although he’s far from perfect, he demonstrates heroism in every aspect of his life. That’s mykind of hero!

Thankful for You releases this Saturday at all major e-tailers. It’is now available for preorder on Amazon, All Romance e-Books, i-Tunes and Kobo.

Behind-the-Scenes Secrets of Snow Angels!

Hello my darlings!
I cannot tell you how excited I am that Snow Angels is finally almost here! I hope after you read the blurb and excerpt below, you’ll be intrigued and preorder your copy.
Thanks to the Blog Maven for this opportunity to share some of the behind-the-scenes secrets about the story. I have been dying to spill! So here you go…

THE BACON: If you’ve read anything I’ve written, you know the probability of bacon is high. In this story, I took it to a new level. INSIDE SECRET: Much bacon was consumed during the writing of this story. Okay. Not really a secret to those who know me.
THE DOG. I love, love, love dogs. (So much so that I recently donated Heartbreak on a Stick to the Hometown Heroes: Hotter Ever After Collection, which benefits Pets for Vets.)  INSIDE SECRET: Bo is a wounded war veteran and a dog. He is awesome. He was inspired by a picture I saw on Pintrest of a soldier and his wounded K-9.
THE CAT. I also love cats because they don’t take any crap off anybody. And since Wade and Lyssa are trapped together in a snowbound cabin, I thought it would be fun to throw a dog…and a cat in the mix. FAVORITE LINE IN THE BOOK:  Biby rounded the couch and parcoured off the coffee table up into the mantel. Bo, hard on the cat’s tail, but lacking those razor-sharp feline reflexes, skidded in the turn on the hardwood floor and plowed into Wade, knocking him over.  TRUTH: Cats do parcour. INSIDE SECRET: Biby is named after one of my street team members, whose icon is a white cat.
THE BEAR. Yes. There is a bear in the story. A bear who likes bacon, coincidentally. INSIDE SECRET: The inclusion of this ursine bacon-thief came from a (rather horrifying) visit we got last spring when I was working on this book. The first hint that all was not well in my little welkin was when I went out to feed the birds and discovered the birdfeeder pole (about an inch thick) was snapped in half. Snapped in half. And my (very expensive) bird feeder was missing. Oh, and an ominous footprint in the mud.
The next hint was when I heard my husband screaming. Now, my husband is an engineer—not terribly emotional except when the Seahawks are losing. Hearing his scream chilled my blood.
I ran outside and gaped. Yes. There was my darling dog, racing across the yard…toward a 500-pound bear. I nearly lost all control of bodily functions. Fortunately the bear was groggy, or she thought my black lab was some kind of baby bear mutant. They sniffed each others’ butts and that was that. I shudder to think what could have happened.
Anyway, hence the bear.

THE CHARACTERS: Sometimes I name characters (such as Biby, above) after people I know. In this case, Lyssa is named for my beloved Barista who kept me in caffeine for the writing of this, and Wade is the name of the boy she had a crush on. So technically, she named him. INSIDE SCOOP: Wade’s sister, who heinously double-booked the cabin in an attempt to match-make, is named for Valerie Mann at Decadent Publishing. (She doesn’t even know this!) The book is dedicated to my coffee goddess and to Kate Richards, who asked me to write it.
THE SPEAKING TO THE DEAD THING: Central to the story, and to Wade’s redemption, is the fact that Lyssa is plagued by visits from dead people. Most of them just criticize her dietary choices, but occasionally they whisper warnings or truths that need to be heard. If you follow my Tryst Island series, you know that Kaitlin in Parker’s Passion has a similar gift-slash-curse. Kaitlin insists she is not psychic, and she’s not. She’s “sensitive” (think Counselor Troi on the Starship Enterprise).  Why do I write about “sensitive” people? INSIDE SECRET: Because I am one. Reading people’s energy is as natural to me as eating bacon—though much less fattening and far more frustrating and noisy (which is why I spend most of my time alone. In a room. With a computer.) Tragically, the universe has not seen fit to disclose the winning lottery numbers (yet), and the things I know are mostly pointless, but my sensitivity does make me a much better writer, because it is easy to put myself into other peoples’ heads and shift or alter my consciousness. But that could be a reflection of my dyslexia too.  Or an overload of bacon…
Well, there you go. Just a few secrets from my steamy new release, SNOW ANGELS from Decadent Publishing. I hope you will grab a copy today and be sure to tell your friends! Read on for a blurb and an excerpt and oh, by the way, a chance to win the #SnowAngelsTiara.

SNOW ANGELS by Sabrina York
The last thing Wade Masters wants on his month-long getaway to his sister’s wilderness cabin is company.  A wounded warrior, Wade is looking for complete isolation to deal with the tragedy of his life and his screaming guilt.
But company he gets, in the form of Lyssa Salk, a spunky, diminutive massage therapist. Who says she can talk to dead people.
Trapped together in the snowbound cabin, Wade and Lyssa have little else to do but help each other heal, spiritually, physically and sexually.

READ AN EXCERPT:
He probably stayed in the shower too long; the water was turning tepid. But Wade didn’t care. He stepped out and dried off, ruffling his hair with the fluffy towel. He tried to ignore the pink hearts. But it was either pink hearts or Hello Kitty.
He resolved, if he ever visited this cabin again, he would bring his own towels. Something manly.
Camo maybe.
A sharp series of barks brought his head up with a snap.
Bo.
Bo rarely barked, and then only at a threat.
Wade snapped into gear, wrapping the towel around his waist and stopping in the bedroom to grab his pistol. He’d seen bear tracks and scat on his run and though it was the middle of winter, he knew they could come out of hibernation. They’d been known to break into cabins if they smelled food.
His heart leapt into his throat at the thought of Bo facing a hungry five-hundred pound beast with no protection.
Towel flapping, he pounded down the short hall into the great room of the cabin, expecting the worst. He stopped in his tracks.
Yeah.
It was the worst.
Not a bear.
But an even greater predator.
There, pressed up against the door, cornered by his snarling protector, be-speckled with snow and clutching a mangy backpack, was a woman.
He could tell she was a woman, even though she wore about six coats, one on top of the other, and a knit hat pulled down over her ears. Long black hair escaped from the cap, trailing over her shoulders. But it was the eyes that gave her away, wide and round and fringed with thick lashes. And her chin. It was delicate, dimpled, quivering. Her lips were parted. Her exquisite face pale.
Bo glanced back at him as if crowing, look what I caught! And then edged forward with an ominous growl.
The girl clutched her backpack closer and issued a panicked little peep. She tried to press back into the door, making herself as tiny as she could, but there was no give.
Besides, she was tiny enough.
Like a woodland sprite.
He would have thought her a fairy come in from the woods if he’d had a hint of whimsy in him. And if she hadn’t been wearing everything she owned. He didn’t know much about fairies, but he was pretty sure they had some fashion sense.
Bo’s growl became a snarl, a snap, and the girl warbled a wail. “Please!” she cried. “Call him off!”
Wade snapped his fingers, fully expecting Bo to heel. He’d been methodically trained by a world-renown expert. He always behaved.
He did not.
His hackles rose and he took another menacing step toward the girl. A tear tracked down her cheek. Her entire body shook. “P-please!”
“Bo! Fuß!” The command to heel in the language he’d learned as a puppy, penetrated and Bo licked his muzzle, gave a canine whine and padded to Wade’s side. “Braver Hund.” Wade riffled the scruff of Bo’s beck and gave him a scratch. “Good dog.”
The girl collapsed against the door, but her attention did not waver from Bo, whose hackles were still up. Wade didn’t understand his dog’s reaction. He’d always been friendly to strangers before, more likely to whap them to death with his tail than to so much as growl. But then his gaze fell on the small cage at the girl’s feet and he froze. He could see a hint of the creature inside and he suddenly understood.
Hell.
She had a cat.
Perfect.
Not only was his solitude shattered by an unwanted female guest, a bedraggled homeless ragamuffin, she’d brought a cat.
Damn.
He hated cats.

Nobody’s Perfect

by Cindy Spencer Pape

When Decadent Publishing asked me to be a part of a Calendar Men series, it was something I had to stop and think about. I’ve been writing a lot of other stuff lately, and not spending much time on contemporary erotic romance. But I never can resist the idea of a wounded hero, so of course I eventually agreed. I was assigned November, and so my mind immediately went to Thanksgiving. However, I remembered that for a military man, Veteran’s Day might be even more significant. So while Thankful is in the title, my story does span both holidays.
Another thing that immediately came to mind was Douglas Adams’s Thanks for All the Fish. Just the title—nothing in the story is relevant to his satiric space fantasy. But that silly working title did give me a grip on my characters. Elsie owns a pet shop, and Sig, my battered hero, is building a large aquarium into the old house he’s rehabbing as he reevaluates his life. He’s drawn to Elsie, who seems completely oblivious to his disfiguring scars, so as he keeps visiting the pet shop, the scale of his project grows, just to he can have more excuses to see her.
Of course, to be the perfect woman for Sig, Elsie has to have some scars of her own. Hers are psychological, but they’re major and traumatic. One of the themes I love in this story is the idea that neither character is perfect. But if they can overcome all the issues holding them back, they just might be perfect for one another. In the end, I’m so glad I wrote Thankful for You. It ended up meaning a lot to me, and I hope it touches the reader’s heart in some small way.

Blurb:
Appearing in a benefit calendar may have been the dumbest thing veteran Sig Nowicki ever did. Suddenly, he’s become his small town’s golden boy, and he doesn’t much like being in the spotlight. Mostly he needs a job, now that his military career was ended by a grenade.
Pet shop owner Elsie Jordan came to Michigan to start over. She’s attracted to Sig and doesn’t give a rip about his scars, but the ones she carries inside her heart are the real hurdle. She just isn’t sure she has it in her to love and trust, ever again.
Elsie and Sig set out to boost each other’s confidence and finally give in to their explosive passion. The entire town seems happy to help. But both of them need to come to grips with their imperfections and accept that they might just be perfect for each other.

Thankful for You is now available for preorder on Amazon, All Romance e-Books, i-Tunes and Kobo.

Turn the Calendar and Meet Mr. September

by Sara Daniel

It’s a new month! Time to pull out your Calendar Men calendars. While you’re doing that, I’ll give you some background on how they came into existence…
Leonidas Russo is a former US Marine-turned-fashion model. He uses his connections in the fashion world to put a call out for models to be featured in a charity calendar he's put together to honor the memory of his brother, an Army soldier who died in the Afghan war. Proceeds for the calendar in the stories will benefit The Fallen Warriors Family Fund, a charity that gives scholarships and assistance to the families left behind.
All together now, flip the calendar page up and gaze in adoration and unabashed lust at the ripped physique and chiseled face of Mr. September. This is his story…

Gretchen Meyers is a full-figured woman living in a model thin world. Desperate to end her mother's constant, nagging stream of dieting and fashion “advice,” Gretchen tackles the challenge of reviving her mother’s faltering modeling agency. All she needs is to woo back Kyle Ramsey, once the hottest model in the country.
Making the preemptive choice to turn his back on his career seemed Kyle’s only option until Gretchen comes calling. He doesn’t care what she wants to offer him, the answer is no. Still, he’s intrigued by her refreshing personality and all her lovely, lush curves.
When tragedy strikes, Kyle finds comfort and healing in Gretchen’s arms. But he can’t trust her with his career-ending secret and she doesn’t believe their relationship will survive the long term. He’s perfect and she’s not even close. Can the fragile ties holding them together survive Kyle’s opportunity to become a true model hero?

Excerpt:
The restaurant scene, then, had done its job. Gretchen would have to send Jamie flowers. No, she’d send a box of fattening chocolates instead. “Did you enjoy your evening after I left?”
Kyle’s gaze narrowed, he pushed himself out of the chair. “Did you arrange with Jamie to drop by our table?”
“How could I, when I had no idea where we were going for dinner until we were there?” Not to mention, she’d have preferred to sever essential body parts than ask Jamie Feldman for anything. But her irrational possessiveness was her own problem. “The important thing is you had a good time, and you’re ready to make up for everything you’ve been missing over the past year.”
“Those things aren’t important at all.” He advanced on her slowly.
She took a step back and came up against the door she’d closed a moment before.
Kyle flashed a predatory smile. He took her purse and briefcase from her shoulder, setting them aside. Then he rested his forearms on either side of her head and stared into her eyes, his lips a scant inch from hers as he spoke. “I’m here for you. Our date deserves another shot.”
Her heart thundered. The thick eyelashes framing his gray-green eyes mesmerized her. He stood too near for her to formulate a coherent response. This much physical perfection and sex appeal should be outlawed. Her mind was not equipped to handle it.
“What do you say?” he asked.
Yes, take me. “I say, why me?” Her voice rose with an embarrassing squeak as she struggled to compose a rational argument and remind herself she was in her office, just feet away from her employees who’d never seen her anything less than one hundred percent professional. “I get why you went out with me on Saturday. You’d shut yourself away from the world, and I was the first woman to find you. But you’ve been reminded you can have Jamie or anyone else you crook your finger for. Why do you still want me?”
His gaze softened with a tenderness that pierced her heart. He brushed his thumb along her cheek. “How could I not want you, Gretchen? You’re smart and funny and beautiful and not afraid to let a guy who has no idea what you like order for you on a first date.”

Mr. July is Here!

Available:  Decadent Publishing || Amazon || ARe || B&N

Ex-SAS Sergeant Rick Week’s career ended in a hail of bullets and the death of his friend Billy. After months of recuperation, Rick can finally fulfill a promise he made to Billy; deliver a letter to his girl. Simple. Maybe....
Hattie Jameson lost the man she loved. KIA. Eighteen months later, she’s trying to move on. Then a sexy-as-hell Scottish soldier turns up on her doorstep—the man who’d been with Billy when he’d died.  She shouldn’t find him attractive. Not at all....

Fortunately, fate, and Billy, have plans to bring the reluctant lovers together. Can Rick and Hattie get past their grief and let love in?

Excerpt:

“I’m Rick Weeks. Pleasure to meet you.”
Hattie’s hand was already out, ready to shake, but when he spoke, she faltered. Rick Weeks. She knew that name. She shouldn’t, but thanks to one of the men in Billy’s squad she did. Rick Weeks…Sergeant R. Weeks. The soldier who’d carried her Billy back into base while both of them were badly wounded. Billy had taken his last breath seconds after the gates closed behind them.
“I…I….”
Faced with the man who’d been with Billy when he died, she lost her ability to speak, or even think.
From what she’d been told, Billy’s squad had been ambushed in one of the nearby towns. Scattering, they’d been forced to take cover in the ruins. Insurgent activity in the area meant the base couldn’t send out a rescue party. She’d never been able to get an answer on why the British were in the area. But, according to the short letter she’d been given, a British soldier had found Billy injured and taking shelter in a building on the edge of town.
Together, Rick and Billy waited through the night then made a break for the base at dawn. They’d almost made it, the base in sight, but a sniper opened fire. Billy had taken the brunt of the fire, bullets riddling his slender frame to slam into the soldier who carried him—who continued to carry him, running for the safety of the base. The British soldier was hailed as a hero and Billy came home in a metal box.
Now, that soldier—Rick Weeks—stood in front of her, the name given a face, and she couldn’t think of a thing to say. Except….
“Go to hell.”

An Intriguing Concept

by Lucy Felthouse (@cw1985)
It feels like an age ago that the lovely JoAnne Kenrick approached me with an idea. She wanted to put together a twelve-author series which centered around a calendar. Each author that agreed to take part would be assigned a month, and they’d write their story based on this. The idea was that there would be a hunky guy in each tale who would get involved in a shirtless-men calendar, whereby all proceeds would go to a military charity.
The rest of the brief was left very open, so our imaginations could go wild. Personally, I was already hooked at the hunky men part, so I happily agreed to write a story. I was assigned Mr. June, and I quickly got my thinking cap on.    I was intrigued by the concept and my brain quickly provided an idea. I wanted to include a military link in my story, other than the charity that would benefit from the calendar, and that’s when I came up with having a photographer that lost her fiancé in Iraq. This, of course, made her very passionate about helping the charity, and as a photographer, she was keen on the idea of contributing a photo for consideration. But with a distinct lack of hunky men in her life, she was forced to abandon the idea. Until her late fiancé’s brother turns up unexpectedly.
Patrick solves her lack-of-hunky-men problem, but supplies a whole load more trouble along the way... and that’s all I’m saying ;)
I had great fun writing my story, doing a ton of research about New York, Central Park, and so on, and it’s a unique project. I’m delighted to be releasing book number six tomorrow – don’t forget to check it out! And if you haven’t already, grab your copies of the previous five books, and keep your eyes peeled for the remaining six titles.

Happy Reading!

Lucy

Excerpt:
Melodie Carr reluctantly clicked delete on the e-mail with a disappointed sigh. She couldn’t contribute to the charity calendar for the Hero Family Fund, a cause very close to her heart, because she didn’t know anyone suitable to photograph. Although her photography work varied—from children to pets, landscapes to portraits, she’d done a bit of everything—she got the impression the call for calendar models sought hunky guys to create a collection to make women swoon. Unfortunately, she didn’t work with professional models and therefore had to give up on the idea. A cute dog, something she had plenty of images of, simply wouldn’t cut it.
She might not be able to contribute, but resolved to find out when the calendar would be available and do her bit to help by buying a few copies. Some eye candy on her wall would definitely not go amiss, and her friends Poppy, Lola and Charis, and her grandmother, Joyce, would no doubt appreciate it. She grinned. Joyce, always good fun, said, there’s no such thing as too much eye candy. The saucy old broad.
Her smile faded. She missed her, having not been back to Boston to see her friends and family for a while. She should ask Joyce to come and visit her in New York—she hadn’t traveled much, and would love the hustle and bustle, the endless opportunities to people watch. Maybe Melodie and the rest of the family could buy her a ticket for her birthday. She’d have to give it some thought. It sure would be nice see a familiar face, other than via Skype.
Someone pressed the buzzer to her apartment and she sighed again. It was probably a delivery driver trying to get into the building. It wouldn’t even be a package for her.
Taking her time getting to the intercom, she hoped whoever it was would go away. No such luck—the buzzer squawked again. She inhaled deeply, trying to rein in her annoyance and avoid being rude or abrupt.
“Hello?”
“Hi,” a male voice said. “Are you Melodie? Melodie Carr?”
“I am.” A caller looking for her? Had she ordered something and forgotten about it? “Who’s calling?”
“It’s Patrick,” the voice replied. “Patrick Brogan.”
“Patrick….” Speechless, she laid a hand on the wall to steady herself as the bottom dropped out of her world. Evidently, running to New York—albeit under the pretense of a good career move—hadn’t been enough. Her past still followed her, still tried to flood her with reminders of what she’d lost.
“Melodie?”
Damn, the man’s persistent. She never should have admitted her identity before asking his. She could have told him he’d gotten the wrong place and sent him away.

Blurb:
Photographer Melodie Carr moved to New York City to escape and make a fresh start. Her soldier fiancé was killed in a friendly-fire incident in Iraq, and she has been struggling to come to terms with it ever since. She still feels strongly about needless death and those left behind, so when she sees a call for photographs for a calendar of topless men, with profits going to the Hero Family Fund, she’s eager to help out.
Unfortunately, she doesn’t know any men that fit the profile, so she gives up on the idea. That is, until Patrick Brogan—her late fiance’s brother—turns up in New York. Seeing him brings up all kinds of memories, but she’s determined to push them aside and be friends with Patrick. She also realizes he’d be perfect for the calendar. But can she persuade him to take part?
