Party Time!

Available HERE
by Jennah Scott

It’s conference time, otherwise known as party time, and that means a chance to meet new readers, see old friends, and a chance to talk books nonstop! I’ll have some awesome swag for my newest release, The Devil’s Bond, at some of the signings I’m attending this year. Which got me thinking…what makes a good signing or swag?

Signings: I think a signing can be one of the most fun parts of a conference. It’s the place where you can find all your favorite authors under one roof. How is that not ideal?! Of course, it’s also a chance to spend way too much money, but that’s the point, right?

There are so many options for readers now to meet new authors and their favorites. Sometimes at a full-blown conference like Romantic Times and others at signings like The Novel Experience Event. If you can’t make it to a signing, or there isn’t one close to you, you may still be able to get your favorite author’s autograph. Check out authorgraph.com. It’s a pretty cool way to get an electronic autograph!

Swag: This is the most difficult part of conference time. I want to have swag that readers will use, not just throw away. The first year I went to the Romantic Times convention I came home with two boxes full of bookmarks, cover flats, and other paper items. I tried to keep them, but in the end most of it went into the trash. So my mission is to get you something you’ll use. On my list are pens, handmade bookmarks, and bracelets.

Some of my favorite pieces to receive are magnets, chapstick, and pins with quirky sayings on them. I love stuff that relates to reading in general as well as the book.

What are your favorite types of swag? Tell us about your most memorable signing or conference.

Inspired by Memories

by Jennah Scott

I’m so excited for The Devil’s Bond. The idea for the story came to me when I was on a trip to South Dakota. My family and I stopped at all the tourist sites: Mount Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Crazy Horse, and a few other small ones. At each place my husband took loads of pictures, giving me time to absorb the scenery. The location that stuck with me the most was Devil’s Tower. I stood at the bottom of the tower and looked up to the sky. The beauty rendered me speechless. A couple of people were climbing the monument while we were there, which was beyond amazing. I’m slightly afraid of heights so the thought of doing what they were doing was anxiety inducing! And awe-inspiring at the same time.

As we walked the trail around the bottom the idea for Garrett and Annaliese began to form. The prayer ties caught my attention almost immediately and I knew right away that’s what Garrett went to the Tower for. Each piece of the puzzle came together and on our ten-hour trip home I wrote non-stop.

So this story is inspired by memories. I hope you enjoy Annaliese and Garrett’s adventure in love.

Enjoy the following excerpt for The Devil’s Bond:
The clean scent of pine and sage from the prayer ties attached to the trees surrounded her. She added pieces of cloth to her mental checklist of details to include. These prayers represented the people of the area. The sacredness of the tower.
Over the years, she’d learned remembered sounds and fragrances added depth to her paintings.
“Excuse me, ma’am.” She turned around and found a park ranger behind her, his arms folded across his chest. The gold badge on his left pocket stood out against the green of his shirt.
   “Yes, sir?”
“I’m sorry, but the park closes at sunset. I’m going to have to ask you to make your way down the trail.”
“No problem. I’ll just gather my things and head back. It’s so peaceful out here, I’d like to say I lost track of time. But that’s not true. The sunset was too hard to resist. I’m sure you understand.” She picked up her sketchbook, charcoals, and pencils then placed them in their respective spots in her bag. The sketch she’d started wasn’t complete, but she had enough to continue it once she’d settled into the hotel for the night.
The ranger offered a polite smile and held his hand out to help her stand. “I do, ma’am. It’s very peaceful out here. I’ve spent many nights under the stars, escaping the hustle and bustle of life.”
Oh, to see the night sky unhindered by city lights and sounds. “I can imagine. Have a nice evening.”
As Annaliese moved away from the ranger, she caught sight of another man a few feet off and to the left. The trees kept him hidden from her direct line of sight. Long, shiny, black-as-midnight hair fell down his back. From where she stood, only his profile was visible. He had skin the color of hot cocoa; sharp lines from his cheek and jawbone framed his face. He reached overhead and tied a purple swath of cloth to the tree. His lips moved, and she wondered what he was saying.
He tilted his head back and, for a split second, their gazes locked. She jumped, startled at the intense connection snapping between. A desire to remember his features, paint him, enveloped her artist’s senses.
A gruff sound from the ranger pulled her from her desires and daydreams. It was time to go. Freewill, Wyoming awaited her arrival.

Meet "Joe" Bascum

Shiloh is busy in her writing cave and has asked me to come to the blog in her place. I’m not too good at public speaking, so why don’t you ask me a few questions? Once you get to know me we can go from there.

Character interview:

What’s your name?

Josephine “Joe” Bascum. Everyone calls me Joe, so you better call me Joe, too. And kept the fact I’m a cowgirl a secret. I want folks thinking I’m a man.

So why are you dressed as a man?

That is a long story. The short answer is I’m safer as a man, and society frowns on a woman riding horses astride and handling a gun.

What are your goals in life?

Besides staying alive? I guess my goals are the usual. Make a good living for myself and find a wife.

Did you say you were looking for a wife?

Yes. I’m looking to settle down with a woman. Do you have a problem with that? And the correct answer is “no, sir.”

What do you do with your free time?

I like riding horses and competing in shooting competitions. I’m a fast draw. I think you can tell by now I’m not your typical woman. Staying at home keeping house in a hoopskirt is not my thing.

What’s your living space like?

Lately my living space has been under the stars close to where my horse is tied in case I need to ride out quickly. I like a wooded area in case it rains. My bedroll and a small fire is all I need.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a drifter. I find work when needed and am a jack of all trades. I don’t mind punching cattle or mucking out stalls. I just do what needs to be done.

Why are you in Bitterroot Flats?

I’m from California. I’ve been on the run, and no not from the law. I didn’t know I was headed to Bitterroot Flats. I just kept trying to stay ahead of the man hunting me. This dusty desert town is full of tumbleweeds and trouble.

Blurb:
After a vicious outlaw murders her father, Laura Rutherford sees no future beyond running the family brothel and kowtowing to the local gang. Not even marriage offers escape. No man can compete with the beautiful women who dance the can-can for her each night...at least not until a gentle stranger sweeps in and opens her eyes to desires too long denied.
Joe Bascum stumbles into Bitterroot Flats looking for a place to hide from a gunman out for blood. When the innocent Madame from the local brothel offers a bed and bath, Joe accepts hoping to show the buttoned-up beauty just how right forbidden desire can feel.
When danger escalates, can Laura help Joe defeat the famous Fletcher gang, or is she destined to live a lonely life as the virgin madam?

The Virgin Madam is available now.

Yay! Christmas!

By Cassandra Dean
I’m a huge sucker for Christmas. I love the sparkling lights and the tinsel and the puddings and mince pies and the getting together with family and friends. It’s all such a blast! I also love watching Carols by Candlelight on TV. Every Christmas Eve, there’s a massive concert in Melbourne that’s broadcast live on national TV. Ever since I can remember I’ve watched the carols, holding a candle with sticky-taped with a drip catcher made of cardboard.
Christmas is made up of these little traditions, ably demonstrated by a fantastic performance from comedian Tim Minchin, he of Matilda, the musical fame.

And, just because I love it, here’s a fantastic telling of Neil Gaiman’s subversive and spooky poem about Father Christmas.

Anyhoo, that’s about it from me. I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful festive season, however you celebrate.

Cassandra

Tie Down My Heart

Tie Down My Heart available HERE
By Linda Carroll-Bradd

The dozen years I lived in San Antonio, Texas sparked a love of the cowboy myth and an appreciation for rodeo as a sport/lifestyle. Sure, many of the competitors at the local and regional rodeos work weekdays herding cattle, fixing fences, managing stud services, and worrying over the latest beef prices. But come Friday and Saturday nights, they transform into the heroes of the rodeo arena. They become the football quarterbacks (another Texas passion) who drive hard for the goal—be it roping a calf in the fastest time, or staying upright for the longest period on the back of a bucking bronc or bull.

In his teens, hero Chayton Red Fox viewed the rodeo as a way to make a life away from the Navajo Nation. His heart ties are strong with his remaining family on the reservation but his wandering spirit keeps him riding the circuit. Although his biggest prize money days are behind him, he is determined to continue competing—the rodeo is all he knows.

Didi Pierpont is no stranger to rodeo life—her two brothers are competitors, and for many, she competed for the title of rodeo queen. In her youth, she also partied with quite a few of the rodeo riders. Who could resist the way those chaps accented a fit and firm backside? Now she embarks on a new career as a journalist covering the regional rodeos, but no one will take her seriously.

Enjoy the clash of two determined individuals in Tie Down My Heart, a contemporary western romance that releases today.

The Virgin Madam

Available November 5, 2013
By Shiloh Saddler

I can’t believe my first book will be released November 5th. I am so excited! The Virgin Madam was a work of inspiration and love. I have a history degree, so when I began writing romance I naturally gravitated toward the historical genre. I was disappointed to see there were very few F/F historicals available. I took that as a challenge and had to write one. I grew up watching westerns my favorite being Gunsmoke. Maybe that was why the first F/F idea I got involved a cowgirl and a madam. Laura and Josephine both came to me as fully formed characters. Laura inherits a brothel after her Papa is murdered. She thought she’d be trapped in Bitterroot Flats and lonely for the rest of her life until the tomboy Josephine struts into her life and wants to make her fantasies come true.
To learn a little more about Laura and her fantasies here is an excerpt.

The Virgin Madam Blurb:

Excerpt:
Time for the can-can show. My heart palpitated in anticipation. Shamelessly I watched the four women file on stage in their long matching red skirts and black stockings. A red feather in their hair.
Mr. Woodson finished the intro music. I gave him a small smile and nod before returning my attention to the women. I let out a quiet sigh. They were all beauties. When I was younger I cried myself to sleep wishing I had their figure; now full grown, I had given up on that dream. I wasn’t tall and leggy like Lulu. I wasn’t as curvy as Rose. I didn’t have Amanda’s fiery red hair or Delilah’s flawless complexion. I was just average.
The black silk chokers around their necks helped draw attention to their faces and lower to their breasts. The ladies grabbed their skirts and walked to the edge of the stage, swishing their skirts suggestively and showing off their clear bloomers. Many men let out cheers or said lewd comments. Ash rushed in and grabbed a seat. He leaned back in his chair put two fingers to his lips and let out a shrill whistle. Like me, he caught as many performances as he could. The bastard had become a regular fixture in Bitterroot Flats, easily partaking in the entitlements. Including murder. He must have had a past with Fletcher. Done jobs together, maybe even served time together.
I had to put up with him. But I didn’t have to pretend to like him. I seared his back with a fiery stare, hoping he could feel my anger.
I wish I never had to see Ash again. I wish I had the power to ban him from the Honey Ranch. The power to keep him from Amanda would be some satisfaction, but the Fletcher Gang owned the town. Ash could do whatever he damn pleased and I was powerless to stop him.
Ash wasn’t going to spoil the show for me. I focused on the women, their every seductive move. The dancers turned around in place before prancing around the stage in a small circle, flashing the gentlemen big smiles. Their faces, heavily painted with rouge and lip paint, glowed under the stage’s lighting. A thrill zipped through me when they formed a line again and started their high kicks. Some of the men clapped, keeping time with the music. Others tapped their empty beer glasses on the tables. The rowdy atmosphere didn’t bother me anymore. The scent of beer and whiskey wafted through the air, mixing with the smell of sweat, horses, and the honeysuckle perfume the ladies wore. I easily tuned out the men, my attention narrowing to the women working the stage as if their lives depended on it. How they managed to dance so well in those high-heeled black boots I’d never know. They helped show off their legs, though. And I could drool over all those legs. Heat and desire burning in my belly, I hoped no one could read my dirty thoughts.

What am I working on now?
The Virgin Madam is the first book in the Girls and Guns series. I had so much fun creating my western world I want to stay in it as long as possible. I am currently writing book two The Lumberjack’s Daughter. I also got roped into writing a contemporary western series with my critique partner Eva Lefoy. Look for the first book Perfect Ride to be released from Decadent in the future!

Wild, Wild West

Hi Peeps,

Please join me in wishing ROUGH DIAMOND a happy Book Birthday. Just over one year ago, the first in the Diamond Series was released. Part of Decadent Publishing’s Western Escape, ROUGH DIAMOND features the tale of Alice Reynolds, saloon owner, and Rupert Llewellyn, Englishman...or is he?

I had so much fun with these characters and with the challenge of writing a western. I hadn’t ever thought of writing a story set in America’s Old West, but when my editor on TEACH ME suggested I give it a try, I jumped right in. A picture formed of a lady saloon owner who creates a monthly theater Spectacular and dreams of the stages of Paris and a canny Welshman employed by a coal company who pretends to be English buffon in order to disarm those he engages in business. Phew, that sounds a bit complex but it all makes sense, trust me! Alice, of course, sees right through Rupert’s prattle and knows there’s more to this man that what he wants her to believe. Rupert, for his part, is fascinated that he can’t fool her. The rest is history!

ROUGH DIAMOND is currently on sale at all the Amazons including US ($2.99) and UK (£1.98). Also, if you like the sound of  ROUGH DIAMOND, the second in the Diamond Series, FOOL’S GOLD, is available as well.

Thanks for hanging with me, peeps.

Owner of the Diamond Saloon and Theater, Alice Reynolds is astounded when a fancy Englishman offers to buy her saloon. She won’t be selling her saloon to anyone, let alone a man with a pretty, empty-headed grin…but then, she reckons that grin just might be a lie, and a man of intelligence and cunning resides beneath.

Rupert Llewellyn has another purpose for offering to buy the pretty widow’s saloon—the coal buried deep in land she owns. However, he never banked on her knowing eyes making him weak at the knees, or how his deception would burn upon his soul.

Each determined to outwit the other, they tantalize and tease until passion explodes. But can their desire bridge the lies told and trust broken?

A Cowboy with a Heart of Stone

“A classic in the making!”~Under the Covers Book reviews

A sizzling new series packed with heart from Amazon bestselling author, Amanda McIntyre.

RUGGED HEARTS—Book I, The Kinnison Legacy! Meet Wyatt, Dalton and Rein, the formidable men of the Kinnison Legacy and the women who will tame them!

Blurb:
Rugged, quiet, hardworking, Wyatt takes his position as head of the Kinnison family seriously. But the scars of betrayal by the women to whom he once trusted his heart now prompt his stark, simple game plan, and no one in hell is going to convince him any differently. What matters most, besides the welfare of his brothers, is to manage the ranch left to him and never risk his heart again to something as foolish as love—but after meeting Aimee, Wyatt begins to realize that a man should never say never to a determined second grade teacher.
When vivacious, resilient Aimee Worth loses her twin sister in a tragic accident, she makes the choice to live out her sister’s dream of teaching in the small mountain community called End of the Line, Montana, never suspecting she’d meet her Mr. Right in the middle of nowhere—he just doesn’t know it yet. Used to challenges, her spirit shatters the perceptions that have kept him isolated from living life beyond the ranch, proving to him that when it comes to love, the greatest risk is not taking one.

Excerpt set-up; stranded a few days before Christmas with students from her class who’d been on a field trip, Aimee and Wyatt battle an attraction started from the first night they met…
She was warm, sweet, and responsive to him in a way Wyatt hadn’t expected. His fingers found the sash of the robe and gently pulled it free. He cupped her face and kissed her like he’d thought of doing a million times since the day in the parking lot. He pulled her close, lifted her into his arms, and set her on the countertop. She held his face, her kisses soft yet demanding more, driving his hunger. His fingers fumbled with unfastening the buttons of the flannel shirt she wore. She braced herself on her hands and allowed him to peel away the fabric.
“You’re beautiful,” he whispered, drawing his hand over her silky flesh. He cupped her soft breast, and she fit his palm with sweet perfection. After another fiery kiss, he trailed his lips over her skin, taking in her musky scent. Encouraged by her hand holding his head in place, he helped himself, closing his mouth over her rigid tip, teasing until she forced his head up to look at her.
“Wyatt.” She breathed his name.
He wanted nothing more than to scoop her up and carry her to bed, but he knew that was impossible under the circumstances. Instead, he relished her passionate kisses and slipped his hands between her thighs. He pressed his fingers to her warm, wet flesh. She squirmed at his touch. Her mouth dropped open with a soft sigh.
He swallowed hard and reminded himself that the kitchen counter, surrounded by a houseful of kids, was not how he wanted their first time to be.
“Oh God,” she whispered. “No, no…I can’t. Not here.”
She grabbed his hand and pulled him to her in an explosive kiss that nearly burst Wyatt from the confines of his jeans. He cupped her face and was angling to deepen the next kiss when she pulled away.
“I have an idea.” She straightened and held her hands against his chest. He heard her heavy breathing.
“Yeah, I’ve got a couple of my own.” He reached for her again.
She leaned over and turned on the light, temporarily blinding him.
“I can see we are not on the same page.” He sighed deeply and licked his lips. Her taste lingered on his mouth. She pulled her clothes together, hastily refastening the buttons he’d worked so hard to undo, and tugged the robe up around her shoulders. Only then did she look at him.
Wyatt rested his hands on either side of her, debating whether to stay or go jump in a snowdrift. He glanced up, eyeing her.
“I was just thinking.”
“Me, too.”
“About Christmas morning.”
“Hmm, that’s not what I was thinking about.” She put another knot in her robe tie and looked down at him as if to say playtime was over. Snowdrift, it is. “What were you thinking?”
“I have some candy canes in my book bag. I was going to give them out as treats at school. What would you think about using their shoes like stockings? I think they still fill shoes in Europe—Norway or someplace.”
He winced. “Maybe I can find some clean socks, instead.” His mind was stuck on his libido, and he marveled how she could switch gears so effortlessly. Given the circumstances, it was probably better he redirect his brain anyway. But as far as he was concerned, what they’d started tonight wasn’t over by a long shot. He had tasted bliss and he thirsted for more. Once those kids were out of his house and safely back in theirs, he intended to show her how good they could be. He lifted her from the counter, careful not to keep his hands on her too long.
