Tie Down My Heart

Tie Down My Heart available HERE
By Linda Carroll-Bradd

The dozen years I lived in San Antonio, Texas sparked a love of the cowboy myth and an appreciation for rodeo as a sport/lifestyle. Sure, many of the competitors at the local and regional rodeos work weekdays herding cattle, fixing fences, managing stud services, and worrying over the latest beef prices. But come Friday and Saturday nights, they transform into the heroes of the rodeo arena. They become the football quarterbacks (another Texas passion) who drive hard for the goal—be it roping a calf in the fastest time, or staying upright for the longest period on the back of a bucking bronc or bull.

In his teens, hero Chayton Red Fox viewed the rodeo as a way to make a life away from the Navajo Nation. His heart ties are strong with his remaining family on the reservation but his wandering spirit keeps him riding the circuit. Although his biggest prize money days are behind him, he is determined to continue competing—the rodeo is all he knows.

Didi Pierpont is no stranger to rodeo life—her two brothers are competitors, and for many, she competed for the title of rodeo queen. In her youth, she also partied with quite a few of the rodeo riders. Who could resist the way those chaps accented a fit and firm backside? Now she embarks on a new career as a journalist covering the regional rodeos, but no one will take her seriously.

Enjoy the clash of two determined individuals in Tie Down My Heart, a contemporary western romance that releases today.

Wills, Estates and The Silk Series

Silk & Scandal available HERE
Hi peeps!
The third book in The Silk Series continues to kick my behind as I struggle to get Gwen and Edward’s story down, but the second book is done, dusted and in edits so I thought I’d chat a bit about Silk & Scorn, Book 2 of The Silk Series.

Silk & Scorn is the tale of Sarah Wetherall and Arthur Davenport, childhood enemies who find themselves thrown together as adults when Sarah requires Arthur’s legal expertise. The family of Sarah’s late husband is challenging her right to his estate, even though Sarah’s husband died without writing a Will which, due to succession law, means Sarah as his wife inherits everything. However, her husband’s father is furious at this determination and bull-headedly fights for what he perceives to be his rightful inheritance. At her wits’ end, Sarah seeks the help of Arthur, who is a solicitor specializing in matters pertaining to Wills and Estates, and then, the sparks fly…

So…wow. That’s a bit of legalese right there. Luckily, The Day Job actually deals with these matters so I pestered the Estate Planning lawyer in my office with questions about the whole situation. As Australian Law is based upon and aligns closely with English Law, it was a cinch. Also, luckily, not much has changed in 200-odd years and so what is true today was true in Sarah and Arthur’s time (Early Victorian, for those playing at home). It made researching a bit easier to be able to talk to an expert, let me tell you!

As The Silk Series features people involved in lawyerish-type things, it’s going to be invaluable to have a lawyer available for my questions. Yay for Day Jobs!

Thanks for hanging with me, peeps.

Let Me Introduce You to Hexed and Vexed

Hexed and Vexed available HERE

By Rebecca Royce
A few months ago (or maybe it was more, time moves so quickly when I’m as busy as I am…) I learned that Decadent Publishing was opening a new line called Tease. I love writing for Decadent and knew I had to write one!

So, I set out to write a story about a witch. Why? Well it had been a long time since I had written a witch story and I thought it would be fun.  It was.  Campbell and Olive were born.

For those of you looking for dark paranormal (my normal genre) this is not that. This is lighter and, I think, somewhat amusing. Or maybe I just really, really relate to Olive.

You’ll have to read it and let me know what you think.

RR

Hexed and Vexed blurb:
Olive White has had a terrible six months. It's not bad enough that years earlier she earned the nickname "Worst Witch In Witching School," she is now being forced to watch the love of her life, Campbell Bane, marry her sister Cindy. And she’s being asked to do so in a pink, puke-colored bridesmaid’s dress. Vexed doesn’t begin to describe how she feels.

Her powers pick the wedding as the perfect moment to turn on, zapping both her ex and her to a magical island not found on any map. Someone is bound to find them, but perhaps Olive can get some answers, once and for all.

When Campbell falls ill, she uses her considerable skills to save his life, but can she believe him when he tells her he still loves her and always has? Was he hexed, or is it all a flimsy excuse for breaking her heart?

Idle hands

Silk & Scandal available HERE
by Cassandra Dean

We live in a fast paced culture, one fueled by coffee and adrenaline. We’re constantly on the move, rushing to get to work, to a meeting, to the kids’ sporting events, to our parents’ place for Sunday lunch. We’re doing housework, paying bills, cooking, gardening, doing a million things and running around and around and around. We never seem to stand still, and when we do, we feel that we should be doing something. Doesn’t the car need to be cleaned? Doesn’t the budget need to be done? Those dishes are looking mighty dirty...We’re our own worst enemies, with this constant need to move.
But, and this is the big question, why? Why is it so bad to sit idle, to take time to just breathe and look about? Why must we feel guilty for taking a moment, a minute, an hour, to ourselves?
It seems strange to me. Our bodies aren’t designed for constant movement. We have to rest, or we’ll soon know about it. Its the same with our brains. We have to switch them off, let them rest and revitalise.
To apply such a thing to writing, sometimes you must step away from your manuscript in order to fix the problem. You could be going round and round in circles, ready to tear your hair out because it just. Won’t. Work!!!
I’m pretty bad at the ‘rest’ thing. As a writer, my brain constantly ticks over, always finding the next story or scene. I find it extremely hard to silence my mind, to just be in a moment. Even worse, I’ll finish a series of task and then be at a loss, convinced I should be doing something.
However, sometimes, it’s okay to do nothing. I find stepping away, doing something else, allowing my brain to tick away in the background while I’m doing other things always does the trick. The answer will come to me, and then I can sit before my computer and get the job done.
This seems more productive than traditional “sit and stare at the machine” doesn’t it? It might seem like I’m piking, or being indolent-like, but in reality, I’ve saved myself time and frustration. By stepping away for an hour or so, I’m giving my subconscious the time it needs to work through the problem, to make the connections my conscious mind is simply too fatigued to make. When I sit before my computer once more, fresh and raring to go, I’m much more productive, and it’s all because I took the time to have a break.
So, is being idle really that bad?
I’d love to know your thoughts, peeps. Do you think stopping to smell the roses is a bad thing? How do you relax? Let me know in the comments below.

Undercover Temptation

By Amanda McIntyre

I grew up in a small town, much like Cat, chomping at the bit, waiting for the day I could escape the tedious existence of my dreary, unexciting life. I got that chance after graduation and moved to various places before I married my high school sweetheart and he took a job back in our hometown.

There I was again, only this time, with a new perspective—one we had children and wanted to be closer to family as well as a good place to raise our kids, and two, I’d experienced city life—exciting and diverse as it is, I discovered there is much to be said for small town life. Certainly, it’s not as mundane as I once thought. Age, if nothing else, offers a new perspective that I did not possess in my youth.

Undercover Temptation available HERE
When writing my current contemporary romances, Undercover Temptation and Rugged Hearts, Book I in the Kinnison Legacy, I openly embraced the fact that deep down I’m a small town country girl. Not only that, but I realized how rich and colorful small town life can be—we celebrate tradition, community pride, generations of family farms, teachers that retire after lifetime of teaching in the same school, neighbors stepping in to lend a hand, and the Saturday morning Farmers Market. It’s as though a lightbulb went on over my head and I began to understand the old phrase, “write what you know.”

There’s as much mystery, secrets, angst, romance, history and scandal in a small town as anywhere else and its opened a whole new ‘chapter’ (as it were) in my life.

A bit about Undercover Temptation:
Cat Madsen left her hometown ten years ago, escaping to Vegas with hopes of becoming a famous showgirl, but those dreams evaporate when she finds out that the owner of the club she pole-dances at also dabbles in drug trafficking. Now, using her ailing father as an excuse to return home to the town that rejected her, Cat is back with a renewed determination to prove her worth. But her tarnished reputation may prevent her from building a future among small-town attitudes.
When an undercover assignment lands Detective Reese Jamieson in the tiny town of Sweetwater, he is skeptical it’s a hotspot for anything. Then he gets his first glimpse of the ex-Vegas showgirl who runs the new pole-dancing workout studio. Reported to be a hometown gal with a checkered past, she is considered the prime suspect to front a drug ring, but he begins to wonder once someone threatens the beautiful woman’s life and business. Reese struggles to keep things professional. When things become personal, Reese must risk everything, including Cat’s trust, to protect her from the past.

Excerpt Set-up: Going undercover as a land developer, Detective Reese Jamison is supposed to join Cat’s aerobics class and investigate the possibility she is trafficking for her former boss in Las Vegas. Here he arrives and gets his first glimpse at his potential suspect…

He arrived a few minutes early, noting the lone baby-blue F-150 in the gravel lot. The sun sat like a red fireball on the horizon, casting long shadows across the parking lot. He got out of his car and dropped his bag in the trunk, squeezing the automatic lock on his keys. He took his time walking to the front door, taking in the solitary light pole at the driveway entrance, the sagging overhang of the front porch, and the sputtering welcome sign missing its last vowel. As he got closer, he heard the thump-thump of sensual bass coming from an exceptional sound system. The wicked beat caused goose bumps to rise on his flesh and thoughts he shouldn’t be toying with to filter into his brain.

Yeah, she’s wild, our little Cat. The words of the man at the bar slithered with a slow hiss into his brain, and he swallowed hard to fight off the images it brought with it. The daily grind and pressure of his job left little time for dating. Besides, he was getting too old for the bar scene and though they’d tried, the younger guys on the force had only managed once or twice to drag him to a dance club. He paused at the front door, observing the weathered barn-board exterior. In its day, it was probably a busy place—maybe even a place he might have frequented. The door stuck, and he shoved his shoulder against it, forcing it open.

The main room was empty, dark except for the tables and chairs stacked to one side. Farther back beyond the bar was an area that appeared to be a dance floor. It didn’t take long as he moved toward the dim light to realize it was no ordinary dance floor. He stepped from the shadows and halted in his tracks at the sight before him. It resembled a silvery forest with at least nine—to his quick count—steel poles positioned at spaced intervals across the room. Above, bare light bulbs stuck out from sockets strung across the beams of the ceiling, providing light to each of the stations. He wasn’t sure what he should have expected, but this wasn’t it. The music grew a bit louder, drawing his astonished gaze to a tenth pole set up in the middle of the small stage at one side of the room. Above it, a single bulb housed in a metal, industrial shade spotlighted the pole.

From the heavy black drapes hiding the backstage area emerged a woman the likes of which Reese had never seen. Her long legs were encased in skintight black Spandex that rode miles, it seemed, before disappearing beneath a faded, cherry-red zipped hoodie. She gripped the pole with one hand, letting it slide effortlessly as she dropped her body to a squat position and let her body sway to the provocative beat. She dropped her head back, her dark brown hair done up in a ponytail swished back and forth. Her eyes were closed. Performing silently, she obviously thought she was alone.

Lord have mercy.

Thinking About it Totally Counts

Silk & Scandal

By Cassandra Dean
So. Um. I haven’t been doing that much writing. Bad, bad Cassandra. *hangs head in shame*

However, don’t fret, it’s okay! I’ve been thinking a lot about writing. It counts, right? Right??

Well, of course it does! Authors never stops thinking about their stories. We constantly develop, rewrite, brainstorm and workshop. I know I think about my stories constantly, when I’m driving, in the shower, during really boring office meetings. Constantly I’m reworking, creating, problem solving and planning the next story. It’s pretty busy in my head, at any given time. :D

This constant thinking is one of the joys, and also one of the burdens, of being a writer. It’s a joy because you never not have something to think about, but it’s a burden because you never switch off. Thinking, thinking, thinking, always thinking. It can be exhausting, but extremely rewarding.

The time away from writing, where you’re just thinking about things, is extremely beneficial as well. You need that time to let the story bubble away in your brain. Your subconscious never lets go of the story, and you can find a problem that had been stumping you for days suddenly is completely solved, fully formed in your brain.

Of course, with all this thinking, I need to switch off for a bit, and what better way to switch off than watching TV and movies?

Watching TV and movies is just as good as thinking about it. In some ways, it’s even better. Seeing other people’s style, how they solve problems, helps you develop your own skills. Are you stuck on a particular character? Maybe aspects of the sidekick from a comedy show you watch can help. Don’t know what to do in a situation? Maybe the way the heroine solved the problem in the drama you watch will help. In any event, it never hurts to see how someone else does it, even if it just solidifies you wouldn’t do it that way.

Want to give it a try? Just look off pensively into the distance and it’s bound to hit you :D Not working? Well, to get the ball rolling, here’s a few questions that may help:

   *  What are my characters motivations?

   *  Does it make sense for that event to occur in the plot? Do I need to add a scene or a conflict/beef up a scene or a conflict/delete a scene or a conflict in order for that event to make more sense?

   *  Do I really need that giant squid? (Answer: Of course. Every story needs a giant squid.)

So thinking about it totally counts! And, of course, I’ll get to writing soon...

Silent Surrender is Here!

Buy Silent Surrender HERE
By Alexa Bourne

Have you ever had a wild weekend in another city, one where you did bizzare activities with crazy people and then didn’t want to tell anyone? I have and well, only my closest friends have any idea of the wacky decisions I made back then. When I think of all the trouble I could’ve gotten into…ahem, I’ve grown up a lot since then. But oh how I wish I’d met a man like Quinn O’Connell, the hero from my latest Tease book, Silent Surrender.

Meggie MacDougall, the heroine, took a long weekend away from her Scottish village to play in Dublin and the only person who knows anything about her “playing” is Quinn, the sexy Irish football coach who sweet-talked her into his bed. Indeed, Meggie had a magical time with a man she never imagined she could have as her own. Together they celebrated life and each other. Then, when the weekend ended, Quinn went back to work and Meggie returned to Scotland.

Only, Quinn never left her mind. And many months later he arrived in her wee Highland village to find out what other fun they could have together.
How did Meggie react? She panicked because she is a pillar of her community, a model citizen. Granted she has a big mouth (Sorry, Meggie!) and she knows everyone’s business, but she’s got a big heart. And she damn well doesn’t want anyone to know how many hours she spent in bed with Quinn. What happened in Dublin was supposed to stay in Dublin.

Of course, Quinn has no intention of letting her off that easily. He hasn’t traveled all that way to be denied. And besides, he’s pretty sure Meggie wants him just as much as he wants her. Hopefully he’ll be able to convince her, maybe with just another searing kiss or a gentle touch….

Blurb:
Meggie MacDougall often dreams of Quinn O’Connell, the sexy Irish football coach who swept her off her feet in Dublin. But what happened in Dublin must stay there. She has responsibilities at home, and she refuses to fuel the gossip fires in Glenhalish.

Quinn has never forgotten Meggie and the explosive weekend they shared. Overwhelmed by memories of her passion, beauty, and zest for life, he jeopardizes his cushy career to find her and test the connection between them.

When Quinn arrives in her Highland village, Meggie is determined to ignore him. However, she isn't prepared for the claim he lays on her heart with his sexy charm and his tender soul.

Will pride and fear keep Meggie from embracing possibilities, or will Quinn's gentle persistence break down her defenses and lead her to a silent surrender?

I love a fairy tale...

By Cassandra Dean
It’s come to my attention I have a type in regards to my heroes and heroines, a type I always write about, read about, watch on TV, salivate over and generally devour in great quantities. I LOVE the stoic, wounded, emotionally unavailable bad boy and the woman who fells him. I know, not much of a surprise, right? A lot of women love this trope, but I find in my case there is a reason behind this.

Years ago, and I can’t remember where (apologies to whoever I stole this from), I was told we each have a type which can be defined by our favourite fairy tale and this informs our reading habits and the stories that we return to over and again. When I was told this, I did not even take a second before realising my favourite fairy tale is Beauty and the Beast

Ever since I was little, this fairy tale has fascinated me. I remember reading the book of fairy tales someone had given me and returning over and again to the same tale, to Beauty and the Beast. I was never sure why, just something about that particular story drew me. However, once the question of fairy tales and types was raised by that person (unfortunately forever lost to posterity), I examined exactly why I was drawn to this story and I realised it's the idea of the wounded male and the woman who soothes him, the gruff exterior that hides a prince of a man. More than just Beast, I realised it was also Beauty who drew me, with her own awesomeness. She was the only person strong enough, brave enough, to confront the beast and discover the person within, to ignore what everyone said and discover for herself the truth of this misunderstood man.

So how can you discover your 'type'? Well, what's your favourite fairy tale? Stop and really think about it. Why does that particular tale draw you? What about it makes you return? Do you love Cinderella, with the balls and the gowns and the hero who immediately thinks you're awesome? Do you love Sleeping Beauty? Snow White? The Princess and the Pea? What is it about these tales that makes you love them?

So give it a go! Who knew the stories you grew up with as a child could influence your tales as an adult?

HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY!

Buy Carry Me Home HERE
By Alexa Bourne

My latest book, CARRY ME HOME, is out this week! I’m so excited for so many reasons, but especially to be a part of the Decadent Tease series. Tease stories are shorter, but they pack a punch! To find out more, visit www.decadenttease.com. For now, I’d like to tell you a bit more about my hero and heroine.
Jamie and Mary MacDougall have been friends since early childhood. They’ve fought against and for each other on a number of occasions. They’ve shared celebrations and also mourned together. When they became adults, they married.

But a HUGE difficulty arose and changed their relationship. They stopped talking and so they couldn’t help each other get through the most difficult time of their marriage. CARRY ME HOME begins months after this, after the wound has scabbed over but is in no way healed.

Fighting with our loved ones is a fact of life. Who among us hasn’t hollered at a significant other or a family member at one time or another? There are many reasons people fight and they may all seem legitimate, but to be true to ourselves and our relationships, we absolutely must be willing and able to share our comments about why something isn’t working. Communication is key. Yes, it may be painful, but if the bond means something to the people involved then sooner or later love will win. Not everyone is strong enough to wait and work through the issues. Jamie and Mary want to be strong enough, but they’re really not sure if they are.

I promise you that they can rise above their challenges. Plus, I guarantee you’ll love how they guide (and sometimes drag!) each other to their Happily Ever After.

SILK & SCANDAL by Cassandra Dean, part of Decadent TEASE: Captivate!

Hi peeps,

I’m so excited and very honoured to be here with you all, chatting about SILK & SCANDAL, the first book from the brand new Decadent Tease: Captivate imprint. It’s such an honour to help launch Decadent Tease, along with other fabulous authors. Seriously, peeps, you have to check the books out, there are some mighty irresistible titles coming from Decadent Tease!

However, let me tell you about my irresistible
title ;)  SILK & SCANDAL is, as I mentioned, part of Decadent Tease: Captivate, the historical imprint. SILK & SCANDAL is the tale of circumspect lawyer, Thomas Cartwright, and scandal-wreathed Lady Nicola Fitzgibbons. Growing up, their houses in London were divided only by a wall, and they often found themselves conversing over the wall dividing their houses. They quickly became firm friends, but one day Nicola’s diplomat father received a post in far Hong Kong and they were separated. Bored and alone, Nicola became caught in scandal after scandal, and the ambitions Thomas held to become a barrister and a member of parliament dictated he could no longer hold acquaintance with her.

Eight years pass.

One day, Thomas is surprised in his law chambers by the newly-returned-to-London Lady Nicola Fitzgibbons...and she wont’ let him ignore her.

I had such a ball with Nicola and Thomas! Nicola is such a force of nature, but all her bright smiles and running roughshod disguise an uncertain girl who has never been certain anyone’s affection. Thomas wants so much to be the perfect son to his adopted parents, and strives to an unrealistic ideal...one that might keep him and Nicola apart.

Thanks so much for stopping by, peeps. I hope you enjoy SILK & SCANDAL, the Silk Series and all the fabulous stories from Decadent Tease.
