Lego my Martian!

Remember the old Eggo Waffle commercial where the kid said, “Leggo my Eggo?” Well, this is more “Leggo my Martian!” It doesn’t really rhyme, but it’s kind of cute. After all, who but a scifi romance reader would grab a Martian anyway?
And if you’re going to grab one, the real question is, are they sexy? Are they worth grabbing?

I think a lot of readers find werewolves and vampires and demons sexy, so why wouldn’t Martians be sexy? Is it their green skin that might put people off? Well, I don’t think the Orion slave girls on Star Trek TOS had any trouble with that! See for yourself:

Besides, I think that Leader Desslok – who was blue-skinned and a cartoon character – was quite sexy as well! So the green is probably not a problem. Maybe, though, most might worry the Martians are smaller, considerably shorter creatures. That could be a problem, but don’t tell that to Peter Dinklage, cause he’d love to prove you wrong. No, the main problem with Martians is that they’re extinct.
In The Trouble With Memories, the proud Martian warrior race is dead and gone – or is it? When a determined scientist uses viral Martian DNA to create an artificial intelligence interface, he unknowingly resurrects the genetic backbone of the long lost species, which attempts an internal takeover.  As in, why bother to grab a Martian when the Martian is already grabbing you?
Now that’s a problem.

The Trouble with Memories
Helium toads!
Lieutenant Lucy Borasco has her phase pistol ready and her ex-boyfriend in her sights. She has every intention of making him pay for choosing his career over her. But she hadn’t factored in a Martian sneak invasion, Cal’s incessant need to save the universe, or the risk of permanent damage to her complexion. Getting Cal back will cost her more than she thinks, leaving her changed forever.
Captain California Sykes’ memories are gone, his career is in ruins, and his ex-girlfriend nearly kills him with a kiss. Can he overcome the Martian invasion, save the rest of the team and win Lucy back again in the process? Or will his seat-of-the-pants plans and the canned fish rations cost him everything he holds dear, including his sanity?

Here’s a snippet:
The windows flexed and the floor rumbled as the jets did another close fly-by. He ignored them in favor of intently ogling the rounded globes of Lucy’s ass. When she spun to face him, he nearly lost his balance.
Three steps later, she was in his face. He braced himself for her wrath.
Her fingers curled around his collar nice and tight. When she gave him a light shake, his head whipped back and forth. Maybe she was trying to rattle some sense back into his malfunctioning brain. “Comet tails, Cal. If this is some game you’re playing to make me miss you, I swear I’ll fill your ass with helium and shoot you out one of those planes!”
He loved how the fire in her eyes matched her hair and the way she jutted out her chin at the end of her pronouncement. But he’d told her the truth. This was no game. His memories of her were completely gone. “How can I prove to you I’m not lying?”
Her lips curled up in a smirk. “Kiss me.”
With a confident toss of her head she laid claim to him, answering his questions about how he’d known her. Hell, he hadn’t known her, apparently he’d known her. The news made his dick swell with pride. His mouth quirked into a cocky smile.
“Come on, Cal. Today’s Valentine’s Day after all.” Her hands caressed his neck, working their way up his jaw. “One little goodbye kiss won’t hurt.”
Her touch confused him. Familiar yet foreign. New sensations and ghostly memories rose toward the surface of his mind but were squashed before they reached the light. He shook his head but the cobwebs didn’t clear. Why couldn’t he remember? Everything but those fragging ships seemed vague.
A twinge in his right shoulder shot up his neck, and he couldn’t help thinking the pain was a warning. He braced for more, but none immediately came. He wanted out of this box, wanted answers. But he wouldn’t endanger anyone else to get them.
“Lucy.” His voice sounded hoarse, as if he’d sucked sand into his windpipe. “Don’t.” Down below, his cock begged, yes, yes, yes.

Romancing the Were....

by Mina Carter

I may have blogged on this before. The appeal of werewolves in romance, or shifters in general. I write all kinds of shifter, from the werewolves in the Lyric Hounds series right through to werehedgehogs in another (yup, you read that. Were-hedgies. They’re cute ;) and fun).

So back to the popularity. The myth of the werewolf has been part of folklore since right back to ancient times, although back then a werewolf was something to be scared of, rather than a hot guy (or gal). Interestingly, Lycanthropy is a clinical name for someone who is under the delusion that they are a wolf, but since films from the 1940’s our perception of werewolves has been more shaped by popular culture than old tales from folklore or medical science.

Perhaps one reason we find weres so fascinating is the danger / impossible element
Available HERE
of the romance. A lot of books deal with a human heroine and a werewolf hero. He’s bad, he’s dangerous, but so
hot. There’s a saying that all girls want to tame a bad boy but let’s be honest, if a guy pulled half of the stunts we read about, he’d be out on his ear. No thank you, sunshine. (At least he would with me! I like my life nice and uncomplicated, thank you very much!) These romances allow us to live through this sort of bad-boy impossible romance from the comfort of our arm-chair, a little escapism from reality into a world where that sort of thing is possible. And can be safely packed away, the book closed or the eReader shut down when we’re ready J

So, tell me. In the world of impossibly bad-boy romances, what shifters are your favourite? Leave me a comment and I’ll pick a random winner for an eCopy of the first in my Lyric Hounds series, Melody’s Wolf.

Mina was born and raised in the East Farthing of Middle Earth (otherwise known as the Midlands, England) and spend her childhood learning all the sorts of things generally required of a professional adventurer. Able to ride, box, shoot, make and read maps, make chainmail and use a broadsword (with varying degrees of efficiency) she was disgusted to find that adventuring is not considered a suitable occupation these days.

So, instead of slaying dragons and hunting vampires and the like, Mina spends her days writing about hot shifters, government conspiracies and vampire lords with more than their fair share of RAWR. Turns out wanna-be adventurers have quite the turn of imagination after all...

(But she keeps that sword sharp, just in case the writing career is just a dream and she really *is* an adventurer.)

The boring part: A full time author and cover artist, Mina can usually be found hunched over a keyboard or graphics tablet, frantically trying to get the images and words in her head out and onto the screen before they drive her mad. She's addicted to coffee and would like to be addicted to chocolate, but unfortunately chocolate dislikes her.

Power Crafting

By Stephanie Beck

I write a lot. Not as much as I should, but I’m working on it. After a particularly long jaunt of writing, I find myself with itchy hands—hands that need to do something creative that will actually give me something tangible. That’s the thing about writing. Even if a book goes to paperback, the writer won’t be able to hold it for months—probably more like a year or so. What to do until then? I know, write more, but at some point I need something to hold, something physical to show a win.

My friends call me a chronic crafter. They tease me and tell me to quit making stuff—unless I’m making it for them. Maybe I overdo a bit. I spend hours, days, sometimes weeks crafting characters who will be immortalized on paper or ebook. Those characters and worlds I build with words can be taken out with the delete key—trippy to think about. No wonder I want to knit and sew and craft—if I do have to hit that delete key, at least I have something to show my creativity brings fruit once in a while.

Are you a crafter? What’s your crafty win? Stop by my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/StephanieBeckAuthor or Pinterest page http://www.pinterest.com/Stephbeckpin/ and show me a picture. I’m always looking for new projects. I’ll show you a few of mine, too!

It took months, but here’s my latest ‘craft’ from Decadent Publishing.

Alice’s Dragon
Dragon Charmer—taking care of your pesky dragon problem—for a price.
Business is good for Alice, right until her dragon goes crazy and bites off her arm. To make matters worse, a tall, dark stranger kills the cash-cow dragon before her eyes.
Instead of dying from her wounds, Alice finds herself under the tender care of Bade, a gentle-handed Bulgarian far from home with secrets in his satchel.
If they can scratch each others backs, the secrets might live on and Alice might still have a job. She’s never backed down from a challenge, but she’s in for more than she bargained for with the tall, dark stranger.

All the best,
Stephanie Beck

Character Excuses

Available HERE
By Stephanie Beck
Ever read a story and have a character fall back on an excuse so vague and off putting you scowled at them? I have. M husband laughed at me when I was sitting in bed, harping at a character who just dropped ‘Well, I’m only human’ as an excuse for not following through on a promise.

It’s bogus! I hate that phrase—my friends have heard this rant and I have gotten the eye rolls, for sure, so I know not everyone agrees with me. In my experience, unless you are faced with a task beyond the ability of the human body, and beyond what a human mind can maneuver, you need a better excuse. Otherwise, the real reason was either a lack of time, a lack of planning, miscommunication—very individual, fixable, nameable things. When using ‘I’m only human’, by golly the problem should be fixable in circumstances when another animal or a machine could have accomplished it. Someone asking you to be a golden retriever....well, I think I would be okay with a pass on that one.

In my world, I see humans doing amazing things—so I have this real love for humans (that gets difficult at times, for sure), so I don’t like using my human nature as an excuse for anything. Real humans have flaws and struggles, certainly, but those same humans shine. I like characters that do the same. Mistakes are made (I’m more okay with ‘nobody is perfect’ as a general reminder—but not used as a cop out) and it is totally on the person or character how to go forward. So many great stories have come from choices people and characters make.

And so many trigger points are hit with a single, usually bad, excuse. For drama sake, things like ‘I’m only human’ certainly need to be in play, but good grief, if you hear me say it, please hit me with the ‘buck up’ shovel.
Do any phrases land on your radar? Do you use them? Love them? Hate them?

I’m happy to offer an ebook of my book, Alice’s Dragon—part of Decadent’s Challenge Series, to one lucky commenter today—so be sure to leave your email address!

The Martians are Coming!

By Eva Lefoy

The Trouble with Memories
Martian Mating – Book 1

No, I’m not Orson Welles and this isn’t War of the Worlds and it certainly isn’t 1938 anymore. But the Martian invasion in my story is very, very real to the characters. You see, there’s this crazy scientist named Dr. Dravis who invents a psy-link pilots can use to interface directly with their ship. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him, but the pilots who use the psy-link are gonna have a wild ride!

Some say DNA is the real “being” here on this planet. The one who keeps everything evolving and we are just pawns in its ever-changing game. Us hapless humans! And it’s the DNA Dr. Dravis uses that puts the Martians front-and-center in the tale. You see, the Martian DNA has a virus and once that virus gets into the human host, funny things start to happen.

Our hero – a hapless human! – Captain California Sykes, is an ace pilot, a real alpha male kind of guy. But then this sultry Martian woman gets into his head via the psy-link and bam! He’s blowing up the Mars Base in the name of Martian sovereignty! Er…oops.

The scientists try to help him out, by removing the psy-unit – and his memories – to keep him chilled out. Trouble is, his girlfriend Lucy isn’t used to being ignored. And when Cal starts remembering what he’s forgotten, the trouble really heats up!

Cooking and Baking Can Be Great Stress Relievers

By Joya Fields

For some people, the holidays bring the added stress of cooking and baking. But guess what? For a lot of people, cooking and baking IS their stress reliever.
In Sidelined Afterlife (Book 3, Hauntings at Inner Harbor), my just-released contemporary romance with a ghostly twist,  heroine Veronica loves to chop, stir and sauté her way through bad times. When her psychic-medium powers (a “gift” she hates) bring a ghost to her doorstep, she makes a batch of salsa to calm herself. When her sexy doctor neighbor needs her help getting rid of a ghost, she chops her way through a batch of gazpacho to clear her head and make the right decision. And when she finds herself alone with the handsome doctor, making a batch of chocolate mousse with him brings them closer together.
For Veronica, helping ghosts cross over isn’t an easy job. Neither is trusting a man like Hunter—handsome, successful and powerful. But cooking helps her get through the stress and clears her mind enough to focus on what she needs to do. It also enables her to see beyond past hurt and fall for Nick as they help the young ghost.
So maybe this year, instead of looking at cookie baking as one more thing on your to-do holiday list, maybe you can stop and smell the cookie dough. LOL. Enlist a friend, spouse, or your kids to help. Have fun measuring those ingredients and making a little bit of a mess. Then take a deep sniff of that vanilla extract, melted chocolate or peppermint, and let your senses take it all in. Let the baking and cooking be part of your fun, not part of your workload. Smell it. Feel it. Create and experience.
Then go help some ghosts cross over! Ha ha. Okay, we’ll leave the ghost part to Veronica, but hope you have fun baking, cooking, and enjoying the experience this holiday season. In the meantime, here’s one of my favorite cookie recipes—potato chip cookies. Hope you enjoy and find lots of fun in the cooking part of your holiday preparations. Be sure to check an exclusive excerpt from SIDELINED AFTERLIFE.

Potato Chip Cookies
1 cup butter
½ cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
¾ cup crushed potato chips
¾ cup chopped pecans
2 cups all-purpose flour
Colored (or white) sugar for topping

Cream butter, sugar and vanilla together. Add crushed potato chips and nuts. Fold in flour. Form into balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Slightly wet the bottom of a flat-bottomed drinking glass and then dip in topping sugar (white…or use red/green for Christmas). Press balls of dough flat with tumbler. Bake at 350F for 15-17 minutes or until browned at the edges. (Makes 3 dozen cookies. Recipe can easily be doubled).

Sidelined Afterlife
Psychic and medium Veronica Matthews hates being able to communicate with the dead and the nearly departed.  What good is it if she can’t lead the police to the victims of violent crimes before they die? But when her neighbor comes to her for help, she’s torn—until she understands that the ghost haunting him is more dangerous than any she’s encountered….
After losing his wife in a tragic accident, ER doctor Hunter Anderson’s only solace is his work and a ghost is jeopardizing that. Turning to his neighbor seems like his only choice, but spending time with the passionate woman, and her sassy attitude, might do more than save his life…
She can’t risk her heart. He’s afraid to love and lose again. Can a ghost help these two souls to live again?

Sealing the Selkie Deal

Seal the Deal available HERE

Seal the Deal is my first step into not only the selkie world, but also it’s my first ever shifter story.

My biggest concern going into this story was that I’d never be able to get the attention to shifter detail just right. I spent weeks cooing and awing at seal You Tube clips, and studying up on Port St. Mary where the story is set.  I took long walks along the coastline with a tour guide on You Tube, and took virtual drives thanks to Google Maps. While it’s true I’ve never stepped foot on any of the British Isles, thanks to all the wonderful people who have taken the time to upload videos of their home town, I feel as if I have. From how to talk Manx to weather updates and fishing talks, I have never been so well studied in a story before, nor so engaged. From start to finish, I lived for my selkies and the little community I had created on Port St. Mary.

I’m working on book two now, and already feel as if I’m right back in Port St. Mary.
When a shifter book works, for me, it’s always  been because the author created characters who are one hundred percent human, but  embodied the characteristics of their animal spirit.

So how about I give you a little taste of Seal the Deal with a scene from the opening chapter.
Soft cotton towels against his whiskers, the warm touch of the sun on his shoulders as he worked the farm, tasty homemade soup tangy on his tongue. Soft flesh of a woman beneath him. Oh, to be admired for his manliness rather than his cutesy seal features and bubble-blowing talents. Fragmented recollections of the little things were all that had survived years of watching the shoreline.
Tensing, he pulled his attention to how much he needed legs again. Long legs. Long, running legs. Resting legs…. And feet! Oh, to walk again.
Shivers wracked his body, flippers quaking hard, fast. Sharp stabbing pain seared him, pins and needles prickling every inch. Darkness closed around him. His tensed muscles turned to mush, and his pounding heart eased. And then, nothing but darkness.
Black-and-clear vision returned, but blurred. A seagull squawked above. Focusing on the bird in flight, Finn’s sight sharpened and colorized.
He rubbed his eyes.
The pads of his fingers were hard against his skin. Fingers? He sat, willing digits and toes to wiggle. Blinking, he pinched his soft, warm cheeks. Pulling at the skin, he stretched his mouth into a wide smile and clamped his fingers between his sharp teeth. Ouch. Had the plan really worked? Was he staring at limbs? Were they really a part of him? Was he human again? To be sure his mind wasn’t playing tricks, he dragged his feet along the wet sand and waved an arm. Fantastic. Then he kicked the air. Delighted with the certainty, laughter roared from deep within.
No time for celebrations. To make his reprieve from the ocean stick, Finn had to find his soul mate. Fast. His father had promised to be ready for this night. God, he prayed he would be. Finn believed in his father’s convictions—he always came through on promises.
The February air bit his naked bottom and sent shudders racing through him. Covering his groin with his shed sealskin—in case he crossed paths with ramblers or fishermen, both of whom frequented the area—he hopped from one rock to the next, navigating the beach. He then raced through the overgrown meadows, focused on each foot landing on ground, the damp, rich green grass poking between his toes, tickling them. Determination fired him up. Alive with an electric buzz he had never experienced before, he ran. And ran.

Trick or Treat - Between Moonlit Covers

by Kali Willows

What will you be doing this Halloween Eve???

Read on and I’ll tell you about a fun place to stop by tonight for more chances to win prizes!

Keeping an active self-promotional routine online isn’t always as easy as it seems. For some authors, it can be gruelling and arduous, for others, a true delight. Authors come from all walks of life with fantastic tales of steamy romance, intrigue, suspense and so much more. Some, work full time jobs, are raising young families and trying to juggle everything to fit in writing; others, have paid their dues, and have the opportunity to write full time and make every minute of their day count, at least, when their muses cooperate.

Online presence, in the forms of blogging, contests, advertisement and social networking can be highly effective in getting us out there to our readers, and a lot of fun! Other times, it can become an extreme distraction, cause for procrastination and the chance at some decent social interactions—come on, you have to admit, a lot of the FaceBook apps, are highly addictive and time consuming *she grins*. The voices in our heads, telling spectacular tales for us to share, aren’t always the best company to keep one completely satisfied.

Being a busy, married mother of two with a full time career, I “make time” to write in the wee hours of the night, when the house is quiet. This limited span, however, has created a dilemma for me, personally. Either write, write, write, and disconnect the internet in order to achieve my goals, (and my smart phone) or do the online promo to get the word out about my already published books, and miss out on writing time.
My solution to this? Well, truth is, I don’t have a solution: short of winning the jackpot in the lottery, and becoming a full time, stay at home mother and author. But another venue that appeases the need for public interactions is something that is near and dear to my heart anyway: RADIO.
I love doing radio. I began co-hosting a blogtalk radio show years ago, and got the radio bug, when things got too busy, I took a two year hiatus. Now, I’m back in the saddle and loving it!

Between Moonlit Covers, with Kali Willows on Blogtalk Radio has once again, arisen from the airwaves grave, to share exciting interviews with dynamic people from across the entertainment industry; You never know what juicy tidbits you will hear from prominent models, actors, authors or other people from behind this scenes as we discuss endless topics on books, writing, romance, and much more.
