TWO: Yes, WAMLAW is actually an ancient gypsy legend of the undead, and still very much so feared in the gypsy community. No, there are no other romance books (that I am aware of) that focus on the myth of the Mullo. Although, there are vampire romance books that mention the myth. But they focus more on the blood-sucking vampire aspect of it.

THREE: The Rainbow Bar, where Pearl and her 'Scooby Gang' hang out, is based on my old haunt in Rhyl, North Wales; The Bistro. It was a place of sticky carpets, cheap student beer, and salmon pink walls. And it was a second home to me during my college years, although I never did meet a sexy Mullo in there. Bummer! It was the venue for many cool bands and new Years Eve parties, though, and was recently used as a backdrop for the making of a movie about The Alarm. Yes, Rhyl is the hometown of them, too. Rhyl is kinda a hub for rock music. Or it used to be. Not so much anymore. The DJ's playlist consisted of such bands like Nirvana, Sisters of Mercy, Prodigy, Poison, Bon Jovi...yes a big ol' mix of rock, goth n metal. I had written that 'alternative club' feel into The Rainbow Bar, but it was suggested (wisely) by my editor that I should pick out more modern tunes that fit the characters better. So The Doors and The Police were replaced with Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Not a bar I would hang out in, but it's perfect for Celeste, Pearl's roomy and best friend.

FOUR: I often get asked if WAMLAW is an Urban Fantasy, because I named the series after the main character. The answer to that would be no, it is definitely a paranormal romance with strong mystery elements. And when you read book two, you'll connect the dots as to why I named the series Pearl Kizzy.

FIVE: When a Mullo Loves A Woman originated from a short story I had written while doing freelance non-fiction work for glossy mags. It had quite a different ending, but thanks to Dracula and discovering the Mullo myth, a new story was born...one with a much better conclusion.

SIX: I am working on Mullo book two, but it's taking much longer than expected because Adam is being a real pain in the ****! Seriously, he has bad attitude and won't play nice. And two characters from the first book have returned, he's not 'dealing' well.

SEVEN: 'When A Mullo Loves A Woman' was written with the title 'Mother of Pearl' in mind – I was aspiring to be the next Virginia Andrews. I guess my style and voice had different ideas. But you can still sense that she was my inspiration, in the sidelines. VA was the reason I thrashed out short stories on my little typewriter, back in the day.

EIGHT: Pull up a chair, and let's talk yummy drinks. Yummy men are good, but so are delicious cocktails. And, in WAMLAW, my love for mixing up the liquids comes out in the form of Pearl and Celeste kidding around about Mullo Mojo being a cocktail (really, it's an amulet to ward off evil spirits) – well, I created that cocktail. Music...it's right up there in the major DECADENT league, you can find it next to chocolate, reading, and all the other stuff I shall not mention here -- hey, some things that are 'meant' to be private you know! hehe

Anyway, when I heard Decadent Authors were sharing their playlists, I got school-girl giddy! I love finding out about which songs inspire authors and for which projects. Well, I had to share, too. Or it just wouldn't have been fair, now would it? So, here's my wee playlist for my current DECADENT release:

1. The Tea Party - Save Me - I've been a long time of The Tea Party ever since I saw them play live, many moons ago. I knew this song would be perfect for Adam; it IS Adam, not only does the sexy, dark rhythm remind me of him, but the lyrics are just perfectly suited. And I would love to save him!
2. The Tea Party - The River - The 'river is running through my veins' - yeah, another Adam song!
3. The Divine Madness - Break Apart - This beautiful, sad song matches Pearl, and how her 'past life' self feels. It's so haunting, and had me crying while creating her back story.
4. The Divine Madness - Closer - This is Adam and Pearl, in the present. No other song could have done the job better. And it's one of my favorites to listen to.
5. Yasmin Levy - Happiness - This is the song that I listened to when writing the 'bedroom' scene, and the youtube video itself is a bit of a bedroom scene. It inspired me a lot, the whole feel of the song is just perfect for Adam and Pearl's connection.
6. Shakira - Gypsy - I listened to this song to bring out the flirty side of Pearl.
7. Katy Perry - Hot n Cold - This song wasn't originally part of the manuscript, but upon advice from my awesome editor, who told me a bar playing the likes of The Doors was too old fashioned, and Police's Roxanne. To get 'with-it' I asked my daughter what her favorite song was. This was her selection -- and it is perfect for Adam's hot and coldness toward Pearl.

As mentioned above, the below posted youtube is my favorite song. And I love how they based the music video on Alice in Wonderland. They make some wicked music videos, and have a life time fan in me :) When A Mullo Loves A Woman would not be the book it is without their music as a backdrop to my writing. Spotlight Sunday with JoAnne Kenrick!

Welcome, JoAnne ~

1. How did you start your writing career?

I’ve always typed away at a keyboard. Either on my wee red typewriter
I had a child, or my old, ready-for-the-scrap-heap laptop. And I will
admit I submitted a short story to Woman’s Own when I was fourteen
(typed on my red beauty). They politely told me the story was not for
them, but that I should keep writing. It was quite macabre for the
likes of Woman’s Own, titled Haunted Halloween House. Duh, what was I
thinking?
Believe it or not, my professional writing career launched not with
fiction, but with non-fiction. Feature articles for glossy magazines
to be exact. Psychic art, power animals, crystals and color healing
are my areas of expertise.
And my first book, When A Mullo Loves A Woman, is my launch into the
world of romance. It releases December 3rd on ebook.

2. Where do you dream of traveling to and why?

It’s tough thinking of places I want to visit these days. I’ve moved house eleven times in the last thirteen years; across Wales (my home town), Scotland and England. New South Wales and Minnesota. And I currently reside in North Carolina.

Bucket list status:
Australia. Check. And yes, I got to cuddle a Koala and pet a Joey.
Get married in Vegas, in a red dress. Check.
Hollywood, to see what Melrose Place is really like. Check.
New Orleans, for food, music, and atmosphere (possibly timed for the
Vamp Fest). To do.
Belize for Mayan ruins and scenery. To do.
Transylvania, for obvious reasons…I’m a vamp/Dracula nut. To do - -
although I did end up in Transylvania County, NC, last month. Does
that ‘count’?

3. Tell us about your current release.

I don’t have a current release, but my debut book When A Mullo Loves A Woman comes out 3rd of December. The story began as a short I had written between non-fiction pieces – it was my first fiction piece in years. But the original short had very different characters in it, and
it was more horror than romance. I’d forgotten all about it until I saw Dracula for the umpteenth time. An idea sparked in my mind (of course now I know that’s the plot bunnies at work) after Dracula said his most infamous line about crossing oceans of time to find love. Next thing, I’m at my laptop researching Dracula. A gypsy blog
discussing mullo came my way by accident. The plot bunnies had a field day with that one. And the rest is history.

4. Who is your favorite author?

You can’t make me chose just one!

I adore Virginia Andrews (her original work, not the writer who took
over the name V.C. Andrews when she died). I’ve been told her
influence shows in my upcoming Decadent Publishing release. Lara
Adrian, Dakota Cassidy, Michelle Rowen, Michele Hauf, Ciar Cullen,
Christine and Ethan Rose, and Sara Taney Humphreys to name just a few.
Seriously, I have so many favorite authors. I read too much. Wait. How
can you read too much? Never!

I love paranormal series, especially vamp ones. I’m a vamp addict.
There is nothing more romantic than the idea of eternal love…Dracula
is my all time favorite story, if you hadn’t figured that out yet.

5. What was your first sale as an author?

My first sale as an author was my upcoming release with Decadent
Publishing, When A Mullo Loves A Woman – My nine year old daughter did
a massive happy dance when we heard the news; she’s so proud of her
mama! And I’ve got to tell you, it didn’t sink in straight away. I
didn’t believe it until I saw my magnificent cover – it’s out of this
world to see your work represented by an image. Kudos to Dara England,
the cover artist at Decadent Publishing, she captured my favorite

6. If you could be an animal, what would it be?

I’m not sure I’d want to come back as an animal…especially if I
remembered my life as a human. I’d miss being able to write, and watch
my favorite vamp movies. Oh wait, you asked if I could BE an animal, not what animal I would be if I was reincarnated. Duh! Past lives are totally on my mind because in my upcoming release, the hero and heroine have a past life connection--how many more plugs do you think
can I squeeze in for my new book? Hmmm
Back to the question. I opt for dolphin!

7. If you could spend the night anywhere, where would it be?

112 Ocean Drive, Amityville, NY. Residents who’ve lived in that house
since the Lutz family fled the property in the middle of the night,
say it isn’t haunted. But they’re going to say that, they don’t want
to de-value the home, right? Plus, I imagine they want to discourage
the drive-bys from local kids and curious visitors. Just one night,
that’s all. Let me at it (she says with Scrappy-Doo vigor)! With so
much controversy surrounding the Lutz’s story, I’d love to find out if
the place was/is haunted for real.

8. Plotter or Pantser? Why?

Somewhere in-between. I’m a pantser at heart, but because my work
usually involves twists and turns, I like to have a basic outline of
what ‘should’ happen. If I don’t, the characters lead me up the garden
path and toward a story with never ending chatter and pointless
scenes. Tsk, characters. Give them a page, and they take ten.

9. What is your favorite food?

Fish and Chips! No doubt about it. There is nothing like being by the Sea-Side, in the UK, and munching down on a bag of Fish and Chips. Oh yeah, baby. That is what life is about. You have to get the server to
soak them in salt and vinegar before they wrap them up so they go all mushy on you. Nom nom nom. That is the one thing I really miss about living in the U.K. And yes, I’ll be sure to put on tons of weight
during our trip back this Christmas.

10. Cat lover or Dog lover? Why?

Both! I would love a dog…a Husky…but the hubby is definitely just a
cat person. We have a cat. He’s feral, or he was before a meeting with
a squirrel. It nearly killed him, and now he rarely ventures into the
garden without one of us present. Too funny. Fun fact: I think our
cat, Whiskey, was Scottish in a past life; he always pricks his ears
up at bagpipe music, and does a little ‘dance’.

And even though he scrambles around our new hardwood floors like
Scooby-Doo being chased by a dozen monsters, the whole family loves
him to death!

Yesterday, my debut book released. It was celebrations galore! Today, it’s the morning after and realty has sunk in. NOT! Wheeeee I’m a published author *pulls tongues* hehe

People all over America are now reading my book, my vision…my story. How fantastic is that? I’m psyched, and wondering if the world at large is enjoying it. Like every mother, I think my baby is beautiful and will win any ‘cute baby’ contest she enters (yes, my book is a ‘she’). ‘She’ started as a short story, and blossomed with some love and care…and some crazy-ass ninja plot bunnies that attacked me while I was watching Dracula for the umpteenth time. It was that infamous line I have crossed oceans of time that did it. Uh-huh. Before I knew it, a couple once doomed in a short story was transformed into a story of love so strong it would wait a hundred years for a second chance. What’s the book? Why, so glad you asked.
