A New Threat?

Buy Ice & Peace HERE
By Clare Dargin

The second book in my romantic and exciting series Cold Warriors is now available.  Here's a quick look!

A New Threat? After a long and vicious war, peace is on the horizon for Earth and its allies. However, a series of mysterious attacks on several secret military installations causes hostilities to rise once again.
Redemption. Having left under a cloud of disgrace, retired Marine Colonel Medoro Keegan is called back to duty.
Bound. His wife Caitlin, the only surviving member of her team, chooses to embrace life, albeit grudgingly, as a cryo soldier. Seen as sub-human, she is forced to serve a planet that denies her rights as a person.
Driven. Guided by their sense of duty and belief that some things are bigger than them, they are determined to risk it all.
Hope. The cost of war is high. Can their love and marriage survive? Or will it be killed off by the very same mission that brought them together?

Genre: Sci-fi romance, military romance, interracial/multicultural, futuristic, end of the world

Heat level: 2
Word count: 43K

~Excerpt~
Caitlin was a sight for sore eyes. She was beautiful. Her petite frame was perfectly accented by the curves of her figure. And her brown eyes and coffee-brown skin was smooth, creamy.
Standing at attention, she did not meet his gaze. Though it was customary not to do as a sign of military courtesy, he could tell she was not doing it for that reason. Her gaze was different. Circling her, he tried to see if he could catch her watching him out of the corner of her eye. In fact, she appeared to be staring blankly ahead.
Peering directly at her, he spoke in a soft tone. “At ease.”
She relaxed.
“Cate. Can you hear me?”
“Yes, sir,” she responded mechanically.
Pain pierced his insides. She was definitely not there. Keegan placed his hands on his hips and hung his head in defeat. The one thing that was supposed to go right did not. For whatever reason, they had placed her in a deeper state of mental control than she’d ever been in. He controlled the hostile emotions brewing with him. Touching her face gently, he felt her icy skin.
This is unacceptable! Not here. I will not let this happen here. Not under my command.
“Chief, listen up,” he said in an authoritative tone. He knew in this state, it was the only way he could speak to her and still have her respond.
“Yes, sir.” Her gaze became even more distant.
Her response fueled his anger. “You are going to hightail it down to the doc and receive a full examination. Tell him it is based on my orders. He will know what to do. Is that clear?”
“Yes, sir.”
Knowing that she was under the influence of cryo neurotransmitters, Keegan figured the only way to combat it was to get someone to reverse it. They usually wore off once she was away from the stimulus triggers for a long period of time. But considering her stimulus triggers were high-ranking officers in uniform and combat situations, being around here meant she was going to be in a drone zone for a very long time. The last thing he needed was a zombie on board, especially one in charge of the lives others.
Only the jerks in psyche warfare thought doing this to someone would be a good idea. As long as he was running the ship, none of that would be allowed. There weren’t going to be any super zombies soldiers on board his ship. And he’d rollover in his grave before he let them do it to his wife.
“After you come back from the doc, you will report to me, understood?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Are there any questions?”
“No, sir.”
“Dismissed.”
She did an about face before leaving the room. Keegan clasped his hands behind his back. In the blink of an eye, his joy had turned to sorrow. Now faced with the responsibility of looking after his wife, he wondered how could he handle the burden of command and still protect the woman he loved.

And don't miss Book 1 in the Cold Warriors Universe!

Team Loki. Are You Qualified?

By Clare Dargin

I like my heroes not so perfect.  I guess you can call them Anti-Heroes.  They are often misunderstood by the people around them though they fight believe and fight for the same things- they just go about it in a different manner.

The quintessential Anti-Hero is Loki Laufeyson.  And with Thor 2 set to be released in the fall and The Avengers 2 in 2015, I have some time on my hands before I receive my next Loki fix.

Tall, pale and svelt, he is not the sun kissed beauty of his more well known brother, his raven black hair and smoldering eyes (hot enough to melt a Bifrost maiden's cold heart) still makes him a gorgeous hunk of Asgardian flesh.

Loki, as misunderstood as you are, I know you are not to be mocked nor underestimated in any way.

Ahh.....Loki, the God of Mischief, how do I love thee?  Let me count the ways-- Three in fact.

1.(Ein) - My heart flutters at the way you torture your brother, Thor, crown prince of Asgard.  A foolish and impetuous man, his love for the humans is overshadowed only by his ardor for Jane Foster. <Hurl!>

2.(Tveir) - Then there is the Great Father, Odin the ruler of the Nine Realms and Asgard.  You loved and trusted him before discovering that you were merely a pawn in his dealings with  your adopted family's age old enemy the Frost Giants of Jotunheim.  He stole you, changed your body to match that of the rest of Asgard but 'forgot' to tell you that you were adopted and had no chance at inheriting the throne.

Nor did it help matters when you realized that the old man was too was blind, not just in the one eye mind you, but in the heart and mind to the arrogance of his golden haired (yet gorgeous..ahem...son) Thor.  Did he not see that it was you who, in the beginning at least, was truly obedient to his will.  If he could see would open his heart and allow your actions to bear witness to your desire for his love and approval.

3. (þrír) - Then there is your intelligence and wit.  Not only do you make wearing horns on a helmet look cool, you make me wish that I paid more attention to my teachers during their endless lectures about Shakespeare in English Literature.

Your tearful lament to your father over his deception was filled with a raw torment that would make the Bard himself weep.

On a related note, when asked about the nature of Loki's feelings regarding the betrayal he felt when his character finds out his true heritage and the perceived favoritism that has gone on between he and his brother their entire lives, Tom Hiddleston said, “if you're uncertain in your affection and in their affection for you, you can so easily be turned and possessed by the green-eyed monster of jealousy, which eats you up and ultimately destroys the love that was there in the first place.”  And when asked about the Shakespearean tone to most of Loki's speech, “...it's got some of the most heart-attack poetry that's ever been written in the English language.”

So like many fans before me, I am firmly in Loki's corner.  Hmm.... I wonder how a gal such as myself could help out a lonely Norse god such as he.

When a fan asked during a recent online chat if she was qualified to be in Loki's army and if so where could she join?  Tom responded, “Last question first: I have no idea. And without revealing too much, there's a specific skill set you need to be in Loki's army - let me know if you have the qualifications.”

I could almost see the mischievous gleam in his eye. I know I got them. Team Loki, All the Way!

Clare Dargin is a romance writer and thanks Empire Mag online for their very cool online chat with Tom Hiddleston that they so graciously transcribed for all of Loki's faithful minions.

Her latest novel Cold Warriors (no not a connection to Loki and the Bifrost, though it is a delectable notion) is available now from Decadent Publishing.

Blurb:

Seen Any Hot Guys in Sci-fi Lately?

 by Clare Dargin

I love me some alpha males especially when they are in uniform!  I have to admit my lust for the type started with my interest or shall I say obsession with science fiction movies.
Who could resist the dashing Han Solo wearing his Corellian uniform?

Then there is Peter Weller in Screamers.

And let's not forget the devastatingly handsome Karl Urban as Vaako in The Chronicles of Riddick!

But if I had to pick my all time favorite, it has to be James Morrison in the defunct Fox Scifi series Space Above and Beyond.  He played the tortured and consummately angry In-Vitro, Colonel T.C. McQueen.

I must admit there is a bit of James Morrison in the hero of Cold Warriors and the sequel Ice Peace's Colonel Medoro Keegan.
Keegan is a man tortured by his past but bound by duty and his love for cryo warrior Caitlin Driskoll to work for a better future.
Cold Warriors and Ice and Peace will be released soon.
Who are some of your faves?

While you think, here is a blurb from Cold Warriors:
When Caitlin Driskoll is awakened from a cryogenic stasis, she’s got a lot of adjusting to do. It’s a new century and the planet is at war. Once married to a Navy JAG, she now experiences life from the viewpoint of a Jarhead, and the view isn’t pleasant.
Colonel Medoro Keegan lost the two most important things in his life during his Marine career: his wife to friendly fire, and his ability to fly combat missions. Now, he’s stuck aboard the Blanchard as the XO. The Corps is the only family he has left and he’s not about to lose the last thing he values.
Until he meets Caitlin, who isn’t shy about telling Medoro what she thinks about his Marines. How can such beauty wrapped in an icy body have so much fire?
It’s the future, and a new kind of prejudice has replaced the racial prejudice Caitlin experienced in the last century. After all, when you’ve been given a second chance at life, you are expendable.

And a blurb from the sequel Ice and Peace:
Peace is on the horizon for Earth and it's allies.  After a series of mysterious attacks on several military installations, retired Marine Colonel Medoro Keegan-who had left the Corps in a cloud of disgrace-- is called back to duty.  Eager to redeem himself, he jumps at the opportunity to serve again on the ship he always loved, the USS Blanchard.
Caitlin Keegan, is the only survivor of a devastating battle that turned the tide of war.  Because of her status as an O-Cryo, she is bound by duty to serve a planet that refuses to grant her the freedom she desires.
Because of the recent attacks, Caitlin is assigned to the Blanchard.  Once on board, she  has to fight for her planet, her marriage and her life.

Escape to another world!

by Clare Dargin

I love the idea of reading a book that can make me forget all my cares for the day and whisk me away to another world.  Those books are real page turners for me especially if they are science fiction.  I know when I read scifi, I'll be taken to another world even if it resembles ours in the future.
There I will meet new people, new technology and a sneak peek into the lives of ordinary people who are thrust into extraordinary situations.

That's exactly what Kybernatia is about.  Kybernatia was supposed to be humanity’s newest paradise but that dream is all but gone.  Ruined in an horrible terra forming accident, the planet was deemed no longer fit for humanity.  Gabrielle Burle, project manager for the development of the planet, was forced out of her job as a veil of secrecy suddenly shrouded the planet.

Determined to find out why or how it could happen, Gabrielle goes on a journey of discovery that leads her to one man who she knows has all the answers

I know you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

For Better or Worse ~ Decadent Authors in the Spotlight

"The tin grin was in. My mom took this picture in 1981 when I was nineteen. I had braces for six years," says Leanne Dyck (author of The Sweater Curse). Leanne offers no explanation for the glasses or the hair, however.

Rita Hestand - 1960s  "Me, the one is a picture of my hair ratted back in the late 60's, it is sticking out all over, the other is what it looked like when it was combed into a style.  My mother was a hairdresser and took both pics."

Kathleen Gallagher ~ "If I Could Turn Back Time", was released June 1, on my birthday. If Cher could wear the wild hairstyle, so could I.

Ann Mayburn ~ late 80's. "Those giant dark glasses, that tough girl glare, I was hell on wheels! Pink and grey 10 speed wheels that is. On a walk...with my grandma and my little brother. Yep...I was a real bad ass."

Valerie Mann ~ 1976, Denver, CO. Dig the groovy beaded headband and sexy hotpants (too bad the picture cut off the view of my legs). My mother made those duds for me - they said "VOTE" all over them.
My father and I came home and found a wild duck in the yard. Judging from the stranglehold I had on it, it's no wonder it flew away during the night.

Clare Dargin - late 90's. That was a meeting for my job a little over ten years ago.  And they were going over from table to table taking pix and I was, oh, I've been here all day... okay... <cheez!> now go away so we can finish and I can go home!!

Maureen O. Betita
~ 1976. "I was 16 and this was my pic from my student body card. Oddly enough, I thought I was fat. Sigh. Man, I loved that shirt! And I often wore it with my light blue bell bottoms, painted with flowers on them... I still own them in my memory box."

Mahalia Levey ~1993 April just admitted early into the military :)

Sheila Stewart ~ "Do not piss me off!!"

Mari Freeman ~ Mardi Gras Road Trip, New Orleans 1985

Gracen Miller - 1989 ~ Good Lord!!--that hair is atrocious!!!  LOL  And to think I paid for that awful curl job.  *shudders*  Looks more like I stuck my finger in an electric socket.  :-)

Jennifer Robins, Age 15
Jennifer always wanted to write even at an early age but couldn't find the needed time until she grew much older.

Deena Remiel ~ A long time ago, in a land far away called Long Island, there lived a girl. There, she shed her sheltered world and came into her own as a college student for four years. This girl was captured in photograph in her second year, 1985. She partied hard, made great friends, and studied well.
