Wolf on a Leash

Halloween may be over, but if you’re anything like me, that doesn’t mean that your craving for something magical has abated in the least. I’m a huge addict of two supernaturally spiked shows this season and my whole week is often framed around my fangirling over those two shows.

For one, I’m a huge Walking Dead fan. I love me some zombie carnage and more importantly, I’m fascinated to watch the characters as the seasons go by to see how they grow and change. I mean, lots of shows and movies show us a post-apocalyptic world, but few manage in the way of the Walking Dead to show how living in a constantly stressful world, of watching everyone you know and everything you know fall away…

Carol for instance? A girl I go to school with and I were just talking after class about Carol. I identify with her more than any character on that show. Some say she’s gone batty, completely flipped her lid, but I don’t think so. She started out the zombie apocalypse as a mother, tied into an abusive relationship because she was a mother and she had a child to care for. We see her lose the husband and be the only thing standing between her child and death and, by this season? She’s lost her child. She’s lost her world. She has nothing left to lose, so yes…she’ll make the tough calls. She’s got nothing left to lose, so she’s not afraid. Having been at a point in my life before when I had nothing to lose? I have to say I get where she’s coming from.

I also adore with a sick addiction I can’t even begin to put into words the show, Once Upon A Time. The blending of magical with reality…of someone trying to make sense of the fact she’s little more than a Disney princess when her whole life has sucked? Fascinating.

I think that’s why I love the paranormal genre. We get that little bit of magic that only those kind of shows and books can offer alongside the gritty reality and character development we see around us and feel every single day.

I have a new paranormal story coming soon from Decadent. It will be part of the Black Hills Wolves series, but I twisted in a few elements of BDSM (my main characters are members of a dungeon and that’s where they meet) and it was, as always, fun for me to find my very own way to weave magic with reality.

The Hypnotist

Have you ever been afraid to go after what you wanted? Maybe felt that with just one little nudge or a ‘ten seconds of bravery’ moment, you could accomplish what you wanted and make your dreams come true?

I gotta be honest…I’ve felt that way hundreds of times. Given the opportunity, for instance, at a lot of book conferences, I hide in my room. I got all stealth/ninja mode and lurk in corners, listening to conversations to see how people interact. I tell myself it is for my books, that it helps me write characters that are more real and who really feel something.

To be honest? I do this because I’m scared. I’m petrified I’m going to fumble, manage a social face plant—because I usually do—and ostracize myself. I think it was Mark Twain who said something about not saying anything being the better choice…since people might think you were stupid, but opening your mouth removed all doubt.

I took that idea and made a short, sexy story. What if a woman, afraid of living her life because she didn’t want to get hurt, was hypnotically suggested to do what she dared?

To find out what happened, I guess you would have to read a book, but what thing do you wish you dared to do?

Do Opposites Attract?

The saying is that opposites attract, but usually when we see that sort of relationship in real life, it is a red-hot mess. I mean, I’ve craned my neck a few times to watch the train wreck of people who were obviously attracted to one another, yet had nothing in common and it made their relationship a battle ground—a war zone.

But sometimes, well, it works out. Sometimes the things that make them attracted, those opposing forces, end up making the other person stronger. One of them is really creative minded and the other is better at planning and logistics? That couple could probably take over the world if they weren’t so happy together and occupied just being in love.

Although my Zero Ohio Story was a sexy mm romance, I think the theme holds true for a lot of genres and a lot of different kinds of people. Riley is neurotic to the point of having his issues literally cripple him. He wants out, wants more than what he’s allowing himself to experience. Basil? He’s been hurting himself by not valuing what he is. Thinking he’s useless for much more than his ability to have sex, the man is afraid to hope for more.

I would like to think they find something in each other that not only helps them and satisfies them sexually, but also maybe helps them be the people they want to be.
