Chilling in Cabo

Last year, I was very fortunate to be able to go on vacation to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. While there, I began forming the story, Chica Bella.

Cabo is a very special place. The beaches are white, the sea and the sky seem to be a brighter shade of blue, the air was crisp and clean, and it is also the place where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean.

While there, I was able to do many of the things that my hero, Landon, and heroine, Maya, experience in ChicaBella. For instance, we took a glass-bottomed boat out to sea, and saw some beautiful fish. It was like watching a living rainbow come to life in some areas. Our captain also took us out a little farther, and we were fortunate enough to see whales up close, which was lucky as it was the very end of whale season and most had migrated elsewhere.

While going to and from the harbor, we watched huge seals jump on to the back of slow-going boats, looking for food. Once a seal was on a boat, it wouldn't get off until it was fed. We had one seal that followed us closely, but there wasn't a platform for him to jump onto on our boat. I would have loved to feed him as Maya and Landon do in Chica Bella.

We were also there during Spring Break, and we had a great time laughing at all the drunken college kids—and there were plenty! There were some unruly ones, as there is in Chica Bella, but there weren't any hunky Navy SEALS around like Landon to put them in their places. The resort we stayed in was exactly as it is in Chica Bella. It sat on the beach, and I took a nap in a lounge chair facing the ocean, the breeze lulling me into a restful sleep, just as Landon does.
