Island Girls Trilogy (Ubuntu line)

by Zee Monodee

A few facts about the trilogy & Mauritius, location of this series

- The Island Girls trilogy follows the 3 Hemant sisters – Lara, Neha, Diya – over the span of the 2000-2010 decade, chronicling the changing face of the Mauritian society over that crucial period.

- Book 1, The Other Side, is Lara’s tale when she returns to Mauritius as a divorcee. Suddenly tagged with the scarlet letter of divorce, she reaches a crossroads when she meets the one that got away, Eric Marivaux, a white Mauritian native. Fear of society’s reprisals in the past kept her from going for the ‘elite’, aristocratic-like Eric. Now that she stands on the other side, is this the impetus she needs to take a chance on Eric again?

- Book 2, Light My World, is Diya’s hilarious quest to find Prince Charming in the sea of frogs that is Mauritius (well, what it is according to her perception!). Follow her on this desperate mission in September 2013.

- Book 3, Winds of Change, follows Neha as she must come to terms with widowhood and the fact that her marriage has always been a sham. In waltzes a man with the ability to make the perfect, ‘saintly’ widow she is burn with passion like she never suspected existed. Will the saint turn into a sinner, or find her rightful place simply as a woman? Find out in November 2013.

- Mauritius is a small tropical island in the southern Indian Ocean. There are no real natives, and the land has been entirely populated by immigrants. Under Dutch rule in the 17th century; French rule until 1810; then a British colony from 1810 to 1968 when it reached independence, the island is a mix of races and religions.

- Despite all races, cultures, and religions living together in harmony in what is termed ‘the rainbow nation’, an unspoken segregation still exists where descendants of colonizers (mainly the French who remained despite British rule) and descendants of African slaves, Indian indentured labourers, or Chinese traders.

- A sectarian outlook still prevails; communities, ethnicities, and religions, tending to stick together especially in matters of marriage and love. Interracial and/or multicultural alliances, though existing, are not the norm and tend to be frowned upon.

Excerpt from The Other Side:

“You’ll never guess who I met the other day,” she said.
Sam stopped crying and dried her tears with a delicate stroke of her finger. Lara couldn’t resist a frown at how the perfect face was not marred by crying. Trust her perfectionist BFF to use only waterproof makeup.
Better get back on the topic. Her throat closed for a second, refusing to allow her vocal chords to utter the sound of his name, because saying it aloud would change everything.
But she was doing this for Sam. So she leaned forward and dropped her voice to a low, conspiratorial tone to share the confidence. “I saw Eric.”
Sam’s eyes grew wide as she bolted upright in her seat. “Get out of here! You met him? And is it the same person I’m thinking of?”
Lara smiled, happy to see the mood back to friendly chatter. She nodded. Sam was the only person who knew of her past with Eric.
“Well, are you just gonna sport such a dumb smile? Come on, out with it. I want all the details.”
Sam’s voice thrummed with excitement. Lara laughed, and recounted the meeting at the clinic.
“Okay, the real question I want you to answer. Was he wearing a wedding ring?” Sam asked as Lara finished her tale.
The elation of sharing the confidence crashed, the shards wrapping around her like tendrils of choking agony. “He had a ring on his right hand.”
“So he’s not married.”
“You’ve forgotten how European, and especially French men wear wedding rings on the right hand.”
“No, but this convention means squat in Mauritius. If it’s not on the left hand, the ring means nothing.”
Damn it all to hell—could there be hope? Could Eric be unattached, after everything that had happened?
And where on earth would such confirmation get her? Eric was out of her league, always had been. The sooner she reinforced that in her mind, the better.
“Come on, Lara. So this means he could be free, and what you saw could’ve been a misunderstanding—”
She shot to her feet. “I know what I saw, Sam. The photo didn’t lie, and the paper said he and his French floozie named Sophie de-whatever-bollocks were expecting their first child.”
“Still, it doesn’t sound like Eric,” Sam said in a soft tone.
Lara whirled around to stare at her friend. “Excuse me? I remember thinking you’re the one who wanted to lead a mob to rip the skin off his spine when you found out.”
Sam rolled her eyes. “Don’t I recall that.”
“Then what the heck are you talking about today, giving him the benefit of the doubt?”
“Because life is short, you idiot. And we’re all older and wiser today.” Sam paused. “Tell me, sincerely, would you refuse if you were given a second chance?”
The slow burn of anger, combined with the bite of disappointment and the sharp rips of crushed dreams, slashed their way through her. “You know what? If that happened, I definitely wouldn’t care.”
“The more fool you, then,” Sam said.
“Oh, bugger off, you sanctimonious cow.”
Sam snorted. “Trust me, we are so not done with this topic.”
And that’s exactly what has me worried. Lara turned her head the other way. She couldn’t bear for Sam, the woman who’d always read through her like an open book, to see how a senseless part of her would grab on to the mere hope of another chance with Eric if one ever came within a hundred miles of her.

Book 2, Light My World, releases in late September, while Book 3, Winds of Change, releases in November this year. Stay tuned for more about this trilogy.

A Walk in the World of Island Girls’ Culture

The Other Side available HERE
By Zee Monodee

Hello beautiful people!
I am delighted to be here today. Book 1 of my Island Girls trilogy, The Other Side, released officially yesterday, and I am still hopping around like a happy bunny on steroids (yes, the Duracell bunny will also do!).
The Other Side is also the first story I ever wrote, my dive into the world of writing. The year was 2005; as a rabid bookholic, I had just finished the epic, 1000+ page novel by Vikram Seth, A Suitable Boy. On the backdrop of politics and the partition of India in 1947, Vikram Seth penned a sweeping family saga complete with overwhelming mother, aunties, busybodies, and other such society drama. Never mind that this story took place in the 1940s; the Indian culture resonated with me because even in the twenty-first century, I—and every other girl of Indian origins the world over!—were facing the same kind of gossip and meddling.
But something was missing for me—the island flavour that Mauritius could bring. Mr. Seth wrote about his country; I wanted to write about mine, to share what the world I lived in was like.
I set out to write a magnum opus. At the time, I was studying for my degree while my son was a toddler, figuring I’d be going back to the world of corporate work once he’d be into school. Writing was a hobby, something I’d wanted to do all my life, but thought it was a dream I’d reach for one day.
Then one day came by, in the form of a breast cancer diagnosis. Forget about going back to corporate—the treatments had me knocked out and I couldn’t hope to get back in top shape any time soon. My focus was on getting better...and also on living, because I’d just had the wakeup call that life can end anytime, and so, as my husband made me see, one day is right now. You can go after your dreams right now; nothing’s stopping you!
So this is how I started writing this story, aiming for it to be along the same lines as Vikram Seth’s super novel.
But it turned out I was also a romance junkie who loved her category-style romances, and also the drama of Bollywood storylines and Zee TV soap operas. What can I say? I was fluffy and I knew it...and so, couldn’t pen a literary read. The focus shifted to the romance, the comedy, the lightness aspect of popular romance....
Once I made my peace with this I am fluffy notion, I haven’t looked back!

Today, I present to you the first story that sprang from my mind. Yes, there’s been a lot of rewrites along the way, but basically, this is the tale I wanted the world to witness. When the Ubuntu line rolled out at Decadent Publishing, I just knew this book – and it’s accompanying series – would be perfect to showcase ‘my’ version of Africa in Mauritius.
I hope you’ll take a chance on The Other Side and its couple, Lara & Eric.

Blurb:
Divorce paints a scarlet letter on her back when she returns to the culture-driven society of Mauritius. This same spotlight shines as a beacon of hope for the man who never stopped loving her. Can the second time around be the right one for these former teenage sweethearts?
Indian-origin Lara Reddy left London after her husband dumps her for a more accommodating uterus—at least, that’s what his desertion feels like. Bumping into him and his pregnant new missus doesn’t help matters any, and she thus jumps on a prestigious job offer. The kicker? The job is in Mauritius, the homeland of her parents, and a society she ran away from over a decade earlier.
But once there, Lara has no escape. Not from the gossip, the contempt, the harassing matchmaking...and certainly not from the man she hoped never to meet again. The boy she’d loved and lost—white Mauritian native, Eric Marivaux.
Back when they were teens, Eric left her, and Lara vowed she’d never let herself be hurt again. Today, they are both adults, and facing the same crossroads they’d stood at so many years earlier.

Lara now stands on the other side of Mauritian society. Will this be the impetus she needs to take a chance on Eric and love again?

Island Bound by Kiru Taye

Hello, everyone. For those who don’t know already, I write historical, contemporary as well as paranormal romances. My stories are sensual, with strong, passionate characters and the settings are atmospheric and exotic, usually in Africa.

Writing about Africa is something I love. I want to showcase a continent and people that deal with contemporary issues as well as cultural ones—a different Africa, larger and more vibrant than the news flashes on CNN.
When I’m not writing, I love reading, hanging out with family/friends or travelling. Born in Nigeria, I currently live in the UK with husband and children.

Blurb:
Marriage has stripped their relationship of its thin, rose-tinted coating, and bared their monochromatic existence for what it was. Will Joshua and Christy get a second chance this holiday season?

So he demands she agree to spend a quiet Christmas on a remote African Island with him, hoping they can salvage their relationship. Excerpt:
“Why are you doing this?” she challenged. Her emotions rolled, making her feel unbalanced. It had been a long three months. And it seemed like today was only going to get worse.
“Christy, you know the reason. If you stopped long enough and thought about it hard, in your heart, you’ll know.”
“You can stop this.” She struggled to contain her anger. “You started this; you can end it.”
   “I know, but I won’t.”
“You, you—” Enraged, she lifted a hand to slap him.
Joshua caught her hand midair, held it tight. Before she could react, he pushed her back against the wall, pinning her to it with his rigid body. Christy felt every bit of him, his strength, and his physical nature that he never bothered to hide.
“I think I have the perfect answer for all your bottled-up rage,” he said as he parted her thighs with his leg.
“Move,” she ordered, her throat dry and croaky, betraying her increasing apprehension.
Joshua had it easy. He was a man at home with his masculinity. She had never been able to resist him. He could have any woman he wanted. Sometimes, she wondered if he had, especially during their separation. She shouldn’t care if he’d been with anyone else. After all, her goal was a divorce. Still, she couldn’t suppress the intensity of her feelings. Perhaps her anger and hatred drove the concentration of her emotions.
“We have to get a few things sorted out first,” he replied.
He moved closer, his body flush against hers; his chest crushed her breasts, his thighs pressed against hers. Though she wore cotton trousers and a tank top, all of him stroked her.
“What are you doing?” she asked as she pushed against him.
He didn’t budge. “Just trying to relieve some of your frustration. That’s what all your aggression has been about, isn’t it?”
   “Rubbish!”
“Such vehement denial, when the evidence is so obvious.”
Her face stung with revealing heat as warm blood rose in her body. Mortified, she tried to move to shake him off, but only managed to get her body even more entangled with his.
Her breathing came in short snatches. She became more aware of Joshua, his hardness and heat.
“I hate you.” Her voice sounded strangled. Blistering clear rage swept through her.
   “You lie, sweetheart.”
He lowered his head, trailing his lips against her cheeks in a tormenting caress.
   “You love me.”
