Spring Has Sprung

Buy Reclaimed HERE
By Sorcha Mowbray
Spring brings lots of activity after a long winter. There’s spring cleaning, spring break, and of course romance. I’m kind of fond of the last one!

I’m not much of a cleaner—I am so NOT a domestic goddess—and I have far passed the age when spring break has meaning. But, as a woman and a romance writer I love the bump of romance that comes with warmer weather. Flowers bloom, birds chirp, and clothes get skimpier. The weather allows for picnics, walks on the beach, and other outdoor fun with your honey.

For me it has also resulted in a flurry of releases! Okay, flurry might be a slight exaggeration. But, I do have two new books out! The first is Love Reclaimed (Book 3, the Market Series). This is a second chance romance featuring two older main characters—not old! Just not your usual twenty-something.

My second release is a bit of contemporary ertica. Mergers & Acquisitions is set in New York City and features two business people who simply can’t resist the physical lure any more.

So, what did you do (or are you going to do) for spring break? Got any other warm weather plans?

In Transition

Buy Love Redeemed HERE

 By Sorcha Mowbray

As you all may know, book 2 of The Market Series has been released. This is a story about a woman who must learn to believe that she is worthy of love. That is the primary plot arc. But, there is a secondary story arc.

The hero’s.

That’s right, Brennan is not my normal hero. He is not a pure alpha male. There is no beating of the chest. He does not sniff his woman and declare—MINE! I know, weird. Huh?

Nope, he starts out as kind of a beta. He is kind, attentive, not even remotely demanding, and he is very upstanding. Normally, he abides by society’s strictures—that is until he meets Serena. He cares and he isn’t afraid to show it. Almost right from the beginning he wants to tell her how he feels, but knows she won’t believe him.

On the journey to show her that she is worthy of his love, he undergoes a transition. Now mind you he will never be an alpha, like Heath from Love Revealed (Book 1); but, Brennan finds he is capable of rising to the occasion (pun totally intended!).

Most of his transition is evident in the bedroom. With each encounter he grows stronger, more possessive, and as a result, more demanding. It leads to some interesting encounters between the two until a resolution is reached.

The transitional nature of the hero was fun to write. Challenging, but fun. *Grins* With the help of my editor we were able to craft the change in his personality over the course of the story. I am so pleased with the result, as is Serena, who got the man of her dreams. LOL!

So, do you like a transitional hero? Have you read many of them? Got any good transitional hero books to recommend?
Love Redeemed (Book 2, The Market Series)

Brennan Whitling wants for nothing but the love of a good woman. He has a close family, good friends, and a successful textiles import business. But, a beautiful and elusive young woman he has only seen from afar haunts him. Until a chance meeting leads to far more than dinner.

Serena Freemont has only ever known the life of a prostitute. When an invitation to dinner by a handsome gentleman provides her an opportunity to experience life as a young lady, it’s too tempting to pass up. Much like the man issuing it. After a night of passion she must disappear or face his reaction when the truth is revealed.
To find happiness Serena must shed her past long enough to realize she is worthy of a future. To win her heart, Brennan must show her the redemptive power of love.

Excerpt:
“Are you all right, Miss?”
For a moment, for this moment, she was a normal young woman experiencing the attentions of a handsome young man. Heat crept up her cheeks as he held herhatbox out, and the burning had nothing to do with the sun. “I-I— Yes, I am.Thank you.” His blue-gray eyes seemed to bore into her.
“I am so glad. I was sure you were a goner there for a moment.” He flashed a brilliant grin liquefying Serena’s insides instantly. “Please let me introduce myself. I’m Mr. Brennan Whitling of Whitling Textiles Importers and Wholesalers.”
“How do you do, Mr. Whitling?” Serena allowed her lips to curve up ever so slightly. “I am Miss Serena Freemont.”
“It is a pleasure. Might I interest you and your”—he glanced around the bustling street as his grin faded in confusion— “chaperone in a cup of tea?”
A wave of horror swept over Serena. Chaperone? Harlots did not require one of those. “Oh, Aunt Henrietta is in the bookstore, and I fear she will be in there avery long time. I am certain she won’t notice if we slip off for a quick spot of tea.”
“Excellent! There is a lovely little shop just up the street.” A beautiful smile spread across his face, causing her pulse to quicken.
He escorted her up the block where they stopped at a quaint little teashop. They settled in at a table and ordered a pot of tea.
“What has you on Bond Street today, Mr. Whitling?” They sat in semi privacy at the back of the shop.
“Oh, I was visiting some of my customers and taking new orders. I am very glad I was there to help you, and by virtue of said assistance make youracquaintance.” Did his already deep voice grow huskier? Their tea service arrived, dispelling the moment.
“As am I. Landing on my backside in the middle of the street would have been rather embarrassing. But in truth, thank you for your assistance today, and now the tea.” She lifted her freshly prepared cup to her lips and took a dainty sip from the delicate china. Through lowered lashes, she watched his graceful movements as he prepared his own.
“It is my pleasure on both accounts. You seem familiar to me. Have we met somewhere before? A ball perhaps?”

Sorcha Mowbray is a mild mannered office worker by day…okay, so she is actually a mouthy, opinionated, take charge kind of gal who bosses everyone around; but she definitely works in an office. At night she writes romance so hot she sets the sheets on fire! Just ask her slightly singed husband.

She is a long time lover of historical romance, having grown up reading Johanna Lindsey and Judith McNaught. Then she discovered Thea Devine and Susan Johnson. Holy cow! Heroes and heroines could do THAT? From there, things devolved into trying her hand at writing a little smexy. Needless to say, she liked it and she hopes you do too!

Decadence, Vice, and the Victorians

by Sorcha Mowbray

Since I am on the Daily Dose of Decadence blog I want to talk about the decadence of the Victorian era. What? What decadence? Well despite the appearance of a superior social morality, the Victorians were very, very naughty! They indulged in all kinds of decadence from the fairly unobjectionable to the downright naughty.

The decadent movement in art and literature led to a plethora of art for art’s sake being created. Much of it was in reaction to the realism movement and the conservative choke hold on society. The Victorian’s were very good at hiding and/or ignoring their vices.

Drugs were a serious problem during this period. Opium was readily available, but the real addiction of society was laudanum. It was prescribed for every possible ailment and was cheaper than gin. Women in particular were heavy users of the drug and even gave it to their children. Absinthe was another common drug, often used in conjunction with laudanum. A hallucinogen, absinthe was popular among various artists and their crowd to stimulate their creative juices.

Despite the strict religious guidelines, or perhaps because of them, prostitution was rampant. Men were discouraged from self-servicing, so they frequently turned to prostitutes for relief. One statistic I have seen claims there were over 7000 prostitutes in London in 1858. For women, it was the best source of income. A low class girl could make as much as twenty pounds a job vs sixty two pounds a year as a factory worker.

Sex was completely repressed and yet utterly entwined in Victorian society. Women were “manually stimulated” by their doctors to help keep hysteria at bay, men sought out prostitutes regularly if they didn’t have a mistress at their disposal, and pornography was a growing problem.

As a result of the strange relationship between Victorian’s and sex, caning, birching, and other forms of sadomasochistic release became popular. It is in this period that the roots of BDSM become very clear.

It is all of this decadence that stirred my creative juices and led to Love Revealed. I was intrigued by the juxtaposition of society’s strictures and the hedonism that seemed to be rampant in London. I set my hero and heroine smack dab in the middle of this churn and gave each of them their own issues to deal with in addition to outside pressures. The question was; what would happen?

As it turned out a lot, but I don’t want to spoil anything for you all. *wink* Now, I know that decadence hasn’t really gone anywhere, it just keeps changing and possibly getting better. For me, I look forward to my annual trip to Vegas with Mr. Sorcha Mowbray. We go and enjoy all kinds of vice and decadence from sinful food to burlesque shows to gambling. It is always a fun filled trip with very few boundaries.

What is your decadent indulgence? Too much chocolate?Shoes?Lingerie?A vacation? One lucky commenter will win a copy of Love Revealed, and don’t forget to pop over to my group blog Silken Sheets & Seduction for another chance to win!
