R I see stories in Images...

by Jessica E. Subject

When I write my stories, I tend to see pictures in my head. Sometimes it plays out like a movie reel where I can see all of the action. Other times, it’s an image here and there.
When I planned out each story in The Underground series, there were certain images I saw that had to be written in. For Never Gonna Let You Go, the opening scene with Erik pouring water over himself was one of them. Also, when the mysterious black creature attacks Calla. I could honestly smell the creatures putrid breath and feel its saliva dripping on me as I wrote that scene.
In Never Gonna Desert You, I saw that creature again, as well as the confused expression on Brook’s face when she learns of her father’s deception. I also heard the dripping of water when she is brought into the caves of Airondelle. Or maybe that was my aquarium filter. LOL
The most assertive image for this series relates to Never Gonna Say Goodbye. I kept seeing a phoenix over and over. In fact, here’s one similar to what I saw. I also saw a lot of destruction, but as to what was destroyed, well, you’ll have to read the story to find out.
If you want to see some of the other images that tie into this series, you can see them on my Pinterest board for the series.

Never Gonna Say Goodbye

The Underground #3

By Jessica E. Subject

Erotic Gay Sci-Fi/Dystopian Romance

Rebels, former Planet Core employees, have banded together in The Underground. They fight against the policies of the corporation that owns the lease on their lives. They will have their freedom or they will die trying.

The rebellion is stirring…
Will Garrison leads the fight against the control of the corporation—he wants his people to have their rights to live and love back. Reunited with his lover, former Planet Core medic Tim Harris, the men disagree on how to take down the corporation.

And the desire for freedom…
Tim’s plan requires that he provide a distraction while Will leads The Underground’s forces in a lightning raid, but who can Will trust when he’s already been betrayed once?

May cost these men everything…
Timing is everything, because if either fails The Underground may be crushed under the weight of Planet Core once and for all.

Excerpt:

“Let’s do this.” Gun aimed to shoot, Will took a deep breath and stepped inside the portal. The mass pulled his skin in every direction. His stomach churned. And then the sensations ended.
He’d made it. Resting his hand on the closest structure, he inhaled sharply, trying to gain his bearings.
The rest of the team gathered beside him, Brook and Melina the only two not affected by the trip.
“Shit.” He needed to focus, regain control. He blinked hard then glanced around the transporter room. Empty. No one had come to meet them.
“Something’s wrong,” Melina whispered, ready to fire her own weapon. “There is always at least one guard in here.”
“I guess we got lucky.” Dale sauntered to the center of the space, raised his arms and spun in a circle. “We are all alone in here. Time to find the fucker and take him down.”
A sudden hiss silenced him. Red light burned his clothing and left a clean, cauterized hole through his chest. His eyes rolled back in his head, and he fell to the ground.
Will rushed in front of the others, shoving them behind the portal.
So much for being alone. How many waited to take them down? He peeked around the structure, weapon at the ready. No one. The guards had to be hiding, waiting for him and his crew to come out.
And come out they would, fighting all the way.

Where are they Now?

For those of you who love short stories, the 1Night Stand series is very popular. You get an exciting setting, two great lead characters, steamy sex and a HFN. But as with all HFNs, readers want to know what happens next! Well in my book Bear it All, you meet young Travis who has a hankering for big, older, hairy guys. Cue John, the bear of Bear it All. Readers can get a sneak peek of their HEA in Wendy’ Burke’s The One He Chose, where we learn that Travis and John are living in Ann Arbor and building a house together.
But where are they now?
Well, as you may remember, Travis had just taken the bar and wanted to become a child advocate and John was teaching law at UofM. Travis passed, of course, and now he is a guardian ad litem at Washtenaw County Court office. He loves his job. John continues to teach, and spending his free time in the small vegetable garden he talked Travis into putting in their back yard. Travis prefers to go organic by shopping at Whole Foods, and makes sure John doesn’t get carried away with his garden and annoys their suburban neighbors or break any rules of the development rules.
Their house has become the place to watch the Ohio State vs Michigan game and every year the transplanted Buckeye, Travis goes all out to taunt John, even wearing full scarlet and grey to the Michigan hospitality tents with John’s coworkers. Last year Travis even bought a blow up Brutus and had him holding a decapitated wolverine in their front yard, which the neighborhood committee made him promptly take down due to a complaint from his own household. But it is all in good fun and John has big plans to best Travis in this game this fall.
Aside from an occasional, “Is this your son?” from a stranger, most of their friends and family barely notice their age gap anymore, and some of Travis’ friends refer to them as the old married couple, ‘Jonvis’.
Still, the happy couple does feel a few things are missing in their lives. Since their home state of Michigan bans same sex marriage, they are taking a trip to Chicago this weekend to check out possible wedding venues. They haven’t told anyone their plans, but they are hoping for a late summer wedding, right before John starts his fall semester. And of course, a honeymoon at Castillo Resorts in Turks and Caicos where their romance began!
Once that little piece of paper shows the world what they have known in their hearts from their first night together, they are considering adoption. John insists he is too old for babies and Travis has always wanted to make a difference in a child’s life, give them the chance he never had. So they’re hoping to adopt an older boy, or perhaps siblings the system cannot find homes for.
Whether any children turn out to be Wolverines or Buckeyes is anybody’s guess, but one thing is for sure they will be growing up in a home full of laughter and love.

Bear it All—A 1 Night Stand Story
Travis hired 1 Night Stand hoping for a hot encounter with a sexy older, hairy man, someone to make him feel safe and cherished, and John looks custom made to order.
After losing his partner three years ago, John needs to learn how to open his heart and live again. He thinks a one night stand in the Caribbean might be the answer, but when he sees the young, thin and much smaller Travis, he thinks the agency sent the wrong man.
Can desire overcome misunderstanding when these two bear it all? Or will both men walk away from exactly what they need and desire?

Deanna Wadsworth might be a bestselling erotica author, but she leads a pretty vanilla life in Ohio with her wonderful husband and a couple adorable cocker spaniels. She has been spinning tales and penning stories since childhood, and her first erotic novella was published in 2010. When she isn’t writing books or brainstorming with friends, you can find her making people gorgeous in a beauty salon. She loves music and dancing, and can often be seen hanging out on the sandbar in the muddy Maumee River or chilling with her hubby and a cocktail in their basement bar. In between all that fun, Deanna cherishes the quiet times when she can let her wildly active imagination have the full run of her mind. Her fascination with people and the interworkings of their relationships have always inspired her to write romance with spice and love without boundaries.

Scary Weather!

My upcoming F/F 1NS release, Rescue Me, centers around my two heroines, Abigail and Carlita, getting caught in some pretty rough weather. It’s a storyline I can relate to living in the Midwest, and more specifically Tornado Alley.

Once upon a time I had a healthy respect for tornadoes. In childhood we spent many an hour in my grandmother’s cellar, waiting storms out. My family also, from time to time, drove out to watch funnel clouds that were a safe distance away. We would check out nearby places torn to bits by tornadoes. It’s wild want twisters can do. Drive blades of grass into trees, gut a house while two homes on either side are untouched, pick up livestock (or people) and set them down a mile away unharmed.

I’ve seen horse trailers in trees, round bales of hay weighing over a ton pitched around like tumbleweeds, metal wrapped around trees, the list goes on and on.
Then there was the night I had to ride one out in my mobile home. My mom and I had gone to bed in a thunderstorm watch. At the time I didn’t get nervous with the promise of storms, and I wasn’t worried. Around midnight I awoke with an eerie feeling. I couldn’t pin it down and I got up and looked out my bedroom window. A bit of thunder and lightning, the dogwood tree outside was swaying a bit with the wind, nothing too dramatic. Yet, I couldn’t shake the bad feeling as I watched the wind stop completely and all fell still.

Suddenly BOOM the tree flattened to the ground, and I heard the roar barreling down on us like a freight train—literally happened in the blink of an eye.
Terrified, I ran to wake my mom. She jumped out of bed and we dashed to the front door, hoping to make it across the road to our neighbors who have a basement. The front door wouldn’t budge, thanks to suction from the tornado, even though we both tried, which probably saved us in the end.

With no other choice we ran to the bathroom and climbed into the bathtub. We had to shout to be heard over the horrendous howl of wind. The mobile home popped and cracked while the floor bucked (the place is tied down by logging chains attached to large cement pillars driven in the ground.) I expected the whole place to blow apart any second. My mom was sobbing, but I think I was overwhelmed to the point it didn’t feel real. How could I possibly have gotten stuck in a mobile home in the middle of a tornado? They tell people to get in ditches as a last resort, just don’t stay in mobile homes.

It seemed to last forever, but honestly I’d say maybe only a couple of minutes, before the roar moved on. By some miracle the mobile home held together. When we came out of the bathroom we found the front door had blown open and the living room was soaked. Outside, our fruit trees were twisted off, limbs and trees were down here and there. Our neighbors looked barely touched with only a few limbs down. The twister had been small, a zero or one, with wind speeds around 100+ mph. Lucky us!

Now I’m terrified of bad weather, particularly wind. My healthy respect has turned into a full on phobia, but can you blame me? Even today, tornadoes are elusive. We didn’t even have a thunderstorm warning that night. The huge F-5 Joplin, Mo, tornado that wreaked havoc with 300+ mph winds remained invisible to radar in the beginning. They didn’t know about it until it started ripping apart their hospital like a piƱata.

If you live in Tornado Alley (or thinking of moving here) PLEASE don’t take our weather lightly! Keep an eye on the sky and take watches/warnings seriously.

This wraps up my public service announcement, as you were J

Why Write About a Rock Star

Available HERE
by Megan Slayer
I’ve always had a thing for rock stars. I mean, come on. They ooze sex. Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Marvin Gaye, Freddie Mercury, Sting...well, you get the idea. They are great for story ideas, too.
When I sat down to write my parts of the Zero, Ohio series, I had no idea the character of Cary Hazard would come about. I didn’t see him initially. Then as the stories evolved, he showed up. I’m glad. He’s not a typical rocker, in that he’s not currently performing. He took a leave of absence from the music business to clear his head. He ends up in Zero because his former friend, Leon – from Mixing Mike – lives there.
Cary isn’t looking for love, either, but as it tends to happen in Zero, fate has other ideas. Fate pushes Cary and Layne into each other’s social circles.
So back to the initial question...why write about rock stars? Cary says it’s simple. He’s interesting and has lived a crazy life that needs to be told. He’s right. He’s also tall, dark, tattooed and sexy. Oh and he’s almost 15 years older than Layne. Makes for some interesting dynamics and conversation.
Will these two work out? Will the rock star thing be too much for the blossoming twosome? You’ll have to read Catching Cary to find out!

Zero, Ohio
Catching Cary
by Megan Slayer
Sometimes giving into fate gets you to the place you most want to be.

Cary Hazard walked away from his life as the front man for the band, Cascadia, to embrace a quieter existence in Zero. With no celebrities and no one wanting things from him, he’s happy. He’s also lonely. He wants to find that one special person to warm his nights and love him—tattoos and all. Will he or end up alone again or will the hunk at the Eight Ball bar be his saving grace?

Layne Stevens has a past he’s not proud of.  He’s looking for redemption, but not in the hands of a former star. If he can stay in the shadows, he’s happy, but lonely. The man singing at the bar has his full attention. He wants to wrap himself up in the guy’s strong arms. Will he be able to open up and offer his heart or will the truth destroy everything he holds dear? It’s a matter of catching Cary.

Catching Cary
Zero, Ohio

What the readers are saying:
“Watching these two flirt and find love was sizzling hot.  They have chemistry that just leaps off the pages of this book.  Pretty sure I have singed fingers now.  I like the idea that opposites really can find love and each brings what the other needs to the relationship. I pick up Ms. Slayer’s works for two reasons, she brings me stories that are original and well thought out and she always makes me fall in love and want more. I know I will be looking for more in the Zero, Ohio series in the future. Bring on the man love!” Redz World – Rated 5 shooting stars

Enjoy the following excerpt for CATCHING CARY:
The busboy he’d been ogling moved to the table next to Cary. He plunked the tub down and rested one hand on his hip. “How are you doing on that beer? Your server took off. If you want another, I’ll get it.”
“You’re serving tonight?” Cary finally saw his face. Thick dark lashes framed his hazel eyes. A silver ball decorated the space between his bottom lip and chin. A tiny bit of mahogany-colored hair dusted his cheeks and concentrated on his chin. The man looked young. Like, young enough to be Cary’s son, young. Damn.
“Yeah.” He snorted. “I’m a jack of all trades tonight. My boss, Tyson, called me in to wait tables, but the guy who normally busses quit an hour into the night.”
“Well, since you’re serving, I’ll take a vodka and lime.” Cary nodded once. “Thank you.”
The man smiled, but dipped his head and blocked Cary’s view. When the guy came back with the glass in hand, he winked. “Here you go.” He placed the drink on the table. “You did a good job on that song. This lot wouldn’t know good music if they had it whacked over their heads.”
“You know Cascadia’s stuff?”
“I’ve got the cassette. My older brother passed it down to me. I’m more into harder stuff.”
“Ah.” Cary sipped the drink, liking the burn of the vodka down his throat. The brother passed the cassette down.... Good God.
“The tape broke so I got the CD over at Vintage. Leon hunted it down for me. He’s good at that stuff.” He cleared the empty beer bottles from Cary’s table. “Speaking of Cascadia, you nailed the flourish at the end. Most people can’t do that and kill it when they try.”
“Thanks.” The tips of his ears burned. He knew he’d nailed the flourish, but hearing the words from the younger man pleased him. “Lots of people sing it?”
“Nah.” He shrugged. “Most people tear the currently popular crap apart.” He picked up the bin. “I’ll be right back. If you need anything, I’m Layne.”
