Hot Cowboys!

by Jon Keys

Today’s the release of a fun novella I wrote in response to Decadent Publishing’s Beyond Fairy Tales and I was lucky enough to get to write my version of Cinderella. I followed the feel of the original Grimm’s tale and had a great time.

Hopefully you will enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

Blurb:
Kegan’s new stepfather and stepbrothers are out to make his life miserable. Between the bullying and being overworked, he’s nearly at his wit’s end. When his mother leaves on an annual cattle buying trip for the ranch, he’s determined to suffer through. He must, if he expects to protect her like he promised his dying father.

When the family of a young man he’s been infatuated with holds a rodeo, Kegan can’t see a way he can compete. Not until a mystical medicine hat stallion walks into his life. It’s not long before they are the talk, and mystery, of the rodeo.

The only thing more daunting than keeping his identity secret is how Kegan is going to balance all this with his draw to the man of his dreams. Will Cole end up being his magical prince, or is Kegan going to find himself left in the dust?

Excerpt:
An hour or so later, Kegan stood in the driveway watching Alec drive away in the final rays of sunshine. Alec had offered to give him a ride to the rodeo, but he’d turned him down. Once the pickup disappeared from sight, he walked into the house and worked his way to the dark back room he called his bedroom. He flipped on the light and clenched his jaw at what he found.
His clothes were strewn across the room. Some were ripped, but all of them looked and smelled like they’d been stomped on by someone who’d just walked through the holding pens after they’d worked cattle. They were smeared with mud and cow shit.
“Dammit to fucking hell! The assholes!”
He stomped through the room, kicking piles of clothes out of his way in a blaze of fury. Everything he touched needed to be patched, washed or, more often, both. This settled it. Brent and Seth were out to make his life miserable. The question had become, what was he going to do about it? They seem to have done a good job of taking away his choices.
He began to straighten the tiny basement bedroom. A few minutes later, the job became so discouraging he dropped to the bed and sighed. Kegan lost track of time as he thought through the last months. The sound of a horse nearby shook him from his desolation.
He forced himself from the bedroom, tired of being the one who was crapped on around there. He stomped through the empty house, his anger as fierce as ever. Another nicker drifted to him, and his focus shifted to the present. He opened the door to find a horse standing beside the porch. A beautiful Paint stallion with classic medicine hat markings.
Kegan eased down the steps and held one hand toward the horse, watching him closely. The animal leaned forward, sniffed him, and then snorted.
“Hey, big guy. Where did you come from? If a medicine hat had appeared in any of the BLM herds around here, we’d have known.”
The horse tossed its head, the black and white markings shimmering in the sun. He didn’t shy as Kegan moved closer. The horse’s only reaction was the rippling of thick muscles as it shifted its weight.
“Easy, boy. You’re awfully tame.”
The horse froze in place, studying Kegan as he moved closer. He reached out, resting his hand against the stud’s silky skin. It nickered at the touch but didn’t move. As he ran his hands over the animal, he marveled at how calm the stallion was. This was one of the steadiest horses he’d ever come across.
“Fella, you must belong to someone. Where’d you come from? I know if I was missing a horse like you I’d be having a fit.”
He turned to go into the house and put out the word he had a mystery horse. When he did, the horse stepped in front of him.
“Hey, guy. I gotta let people know you’re okay.”
Kegan tried to step around him again, but the horse’s hooves shot out and stopped him. After a third attempt earned him the same results, he threw his hands up in surrender. “Okay, so you don’t want me to go into the house. What are we going to do?”
The stallion stuck his muzzle in Kegan’s face and snorted. He turned and started down the driveway toward the river. The river had become Kegan’s favorite place to escape his problems, especially after his dad died, and they scattered his ashes there. He had spent a lot of time watching the snowmelt flow past. In the past couple of months, he’d stopped going to the river. But the mysterious horse headed directly toward a large boulder marking his favorite spot.
The stallion threaded its way through aspen thickets that looked tight for a goat, but he slipped into them without disturbing a leaf. The sound of the river grew as they passed through the mix of evergreen, aspen, and willow. He cleared the final clump of trees to find the horse standing among boulders larger than he remembered.
Kegan took a step and froze in mid-stride. A neatly folded set of clothes was perched on the nearest flat rock. He stepped closer and touched them. The deep-blue jeans and the heavily pressed white shirt were obviously new, not some freak occurrence. He glanced around, wondering what was happening.
“Horse, did your rider fall in or something? You don’t seem concerned about finding anyone though.”
He searched up and down the riverbank to see if someone was trying to swim, or in trouble. He checked for a good distance in each direction and found nothing to indicate the source of either the horse or the clothing. He made his way to the boulder holding the pile of clothes and ran his hand over them.
The Paint stepped close and pushed them toward Kegan. He flared his nostrils and snorted again. With the horse fixed squarely in his sight, he pulled the jeans from the boulder and held them in front of him.
“They’re my size. How the hell....”
The horse struck his hoof across the rock and the wind gusted, sounding like the low note of a Cheyenne flute. The tone drifted away, but not before leaving Kegan with a lingering sense of peace. He looked again to find a cowboy hat, hand-tooled belt, and a pair of boots in the mix with everything else. Each of them appeared custom made. He studied the stallion again.
“You know, I never put much store by the whole medicine-hat-horse-having-magic thing, but I’m starting to change my mind.” He paused for a minute to consider. “Does that mean you’re going to let me ride you, too? I need a horse to do the rodeo thing.”
The stallion slipped beside him, pressed his nose under Kegan’s backside, and shoved him forward. His nudge was enough to send Kegan stumbling across the rocks.
“Okay, got it. I’ll change already.”
He stripped quickly, splashing the crystal-clear water over himself to wash off the day’s dust and sweat. As he slipped into the clothes, he found he’d been right. Each piece was a custom fit. The boots came to just below his knees and stitched across the uppers were patterns of horses and aspen leaves. The jeans hugged his butt, emphasizing his ass until even he had to admit it was toned and muscular. By the time he fastened the silver buckle and situated the hat, he was transformed. The ugly duckling feeling he always had, evaporated. With a final brush of his hands, he fixed his gaze on the horse.
“All right. It’s time to see if this is going to work out. We need to get to the stable and find a saddle to fit you. The big question is, are you going to let me ride you? I guess now’s as good a time to find out as any.”

Author bio:

Jon Keys’s earliest memories revolve around books. Either read to him or making up stories based on the illustrations, these were places his active mind occupied. As he got older the selection expanded beyond Mother Goose and Dr. Suess to the world of westerns, science fiction and fantasy. His world filled with dragon riders, mind speaking horses and comic book heroes in hot uniforms.
A voracious reader for half a century, Jon recently began creating his own creations of fiction. The first writing was his attempt at showing rural characters in a more sympathetic light. Now he has moved into some of the writing he lost himself in for so many years…fantasy. Jon has worked as a ranch hand, teacher, computer tech, roughneck, designer, retail clerk, welder, artist, and, yes, pool boy; with interests ranging from kayaking and hunting to drawing and cooking, he uses this range of life experiences to create written works that draw the reader in and wrap them in a good story.

RELEASE DAY! The Diamond Series Box Set by Cassandra Dean

Hi peeps,

I’m so excited to announce today is the release day for The Diamond Series Box Set! It’s my very first box set, and I’m so stoked to share it with you all. This set combines two of my favourite tales,
ROUGH DIAMOND and FOOL’S GOLD, and are set in the old American west. I must admit, I was a bit hesitant to paddle around in the Western pool, but I had such a blast I’m glad I got over my apprehension! I love the no-nonsense frontier ladies, the uber-sexy, duster-wearing cowboys and the romantical nature of people forging into the great unknown. I hope you enjoy reading these tales as much as I enjoyed writing them!

Cassandra
xx

Stop on by the Diamond Saloon, where devious Englishmen blithely charm sceptical saloon owners and where voluptuous singers archly tease the strong, silent type. Enjoy these two sexy tales from Freewill, Wyoming.

ROUGH DIAMOND
Owner of the Diamond Saloon and Theater, Alice Reynolds is astounded when a fancy Englishman offers to buy her saloon. She won’t be selling her saloon to anyone, let alone a man with a pretty, empty-headed grin…but then, she reckons that grin just might be a lie, and a man of intelligence and cunning resides beneath.
Rupert Llewellyn has another purpose for offering to buy the pretty widow’s saloon—the coal buried deep in land she owns. However, he never banked on her knowing eyes making him weak at the knees, or how his deception would burn upon his soul.
Each determined to outwit the other, they tantalize and tease until passion explodes. But can their desire bridge the lies told and trust broken?

FOOL’S GOLD
Christmas Eve, the Diamond Saloon is empty of its people, and Pearl la Monte has a hankering to retire early. A pounding at the Diamond’s door rids her of such a fool notion. Her irritation rises when she sees the prissy, polite-like Garrett standing outside.
Ethan Garrett has a powerful need to gain succor. When the saloon’s voluptuous redheaded singer scowls at him from the threshold of the Diamond, he doesn’t stop to think on how his ire at her has disappeared. Or how he just wants to spend some time in her company.
When a blizzard storms in, trapping them, will they spend their time arguing or find their irritation for each other disguises something more?

Excerpt from ROUGH DIAMOND:

Lifting the glass, Alice studied its contents. “There is nothing quite like the enjoyment you get from a good whiskey. There’s the look and color of it, and the way it burns in the light.”
“It’s the same color as your eyes,” Llewellyn breathed, his own wide and empty of thought.
A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. That’s right. Fool me into thinking there’s not an ounce of calculation to your words. “Is it? Mighty kind of you to notice.”
A happy grin was her response.
Well now, she was surely going to enjoy this. Setting her own half-smile, she tilted her glass, watching as the whiskey caught the light of the candle. “Have you ever noticed the feel of glass? It’s smooth against your fingers, and though the whiskey burns you, the glass is cool. It seems strange, doesn’t it? That such fire could come from something so cool.”
Intensely aware of his gaze upon her, she brought the glass to rest on her bottom lip. “You lift the glass to your lips, and all that coolness rests upon your flesh. The scent of the whiskey hits you, sweet and fiery. Your mouth waters, and you can’t wait to have it inside you. Slowly, so slowly, you tip the glass, teasing yourself as long moments in want of its taste stretch unbearably.”
He no longer wore a smile. Dark eyes watched her as strong fingers dug into the glass before him.
A prickle washed over her skin, her heart a steady beat in her chest. With hushed voice, she continued. “Liquid slides down your throat. The flavor explodes inside you, a glorious rush of sensation that overwhelms and consumes. You curl your tongue, enjoying the lingering sensation in every part of your mouth. Then, you look at the bottle.” Finally, she met his gaze direct. No subterfuge. No tease. “And you know you can do it again.”

Excerpt from FOOL’S GOLD:

Turning on her heel, Pearl marched off toward the stairs.
A weird kind of panic jolted through Ethan, one he’d never felt before in all his days. It was…he didn’t…. She couldn’t leave him. “Where are you going?”
She whirled to face him, her irritation plain. “I was seeking my bed before your arrival, and now I’m seeking it again. Help yourself to whiskey this one time. I got better things to do.”
Shoving to his feet, he strode to her. “Don’t just walk away when we’re discussing things.”
“We ain’t discussing nothing. You’ll be down here, waiting out the blizzard. I’ll be in my bed, doing what I was gonna before you arrived. That’s the end of it.”
Taking a step, she made to leave him. Again.
He grabbed her arm. “Don’t leave me.”
“Don’t tell me what to do.” Glaring at him, she stood before the bar, her magnificent hair slipping from its pins, her breasts rising and falling.
Abruptly, his mouth went dry. Clearing his throat some, he said, “You’re supposed to offer succor to those in need.”
“We’re closed, remember?” Paint-less lips pressed tight together, she glared up at him.
They were so close he could see the faint marks of freckles on her skin.
Pearl La Monte had freckles.
A kind of haze came over him, tightening his skin and bringing with it something all-fired powerful and completely unstoppable. All the years he’d known her crashed through him, all the times she’d flirted with him and meant something else, all the times he’d seen her perform on stage and wished he could have held such fire.
Grabbing her upper arms, he hauled her against him and, ignoring her shocked gasp, he covered her mouth with his.

Knockin' Boots

For those of you who read my books, you know I like to write about troubled heroes. For example, Blake Massie in Soul Dreams had survived a horrific fire with scars. In Knockin’ Boots, Clint Gorman is a tired veteran of the battles in Afghanistan and suffering from a from of PTSD. He estranged himself from the only members of his family remaining and he can’t seem to find peace no matter where he goes. On his huge motorcycle he’s riding the country looking for someplace he can find that peace of mind and people he can relate to.
But this is a fairy tale, right? Where people’s wishes can and do come true? So maybe the old man telling the story knew exactly what Clint wants and needs and magically led him in this direction, to a chance meeting at a boot store in the tiny Texas town of Whistling Creek. The out-of-the-blue invitation he receives from Dan Franklin and his wife, Kylie, might just be the answer to his prayers.

“I’d just as soon let the two of you take the lead. But I’m not shy about asking if something pops into my head.”
“I don’t know if Dan mentioned it, but I do have a secret wish.” Kylie looked at Dan, who nodded. “We would love to find someone to move in with us permanently. Of course, that would be asking an awful lot.”
“Yeah?” Clint tried not to show his surprise. He’d been in a lot of one-night ménages. Sometimes even two-night encounters. But a permanent one? Would that ever interest him? He gave the other man a questioning look. “And you’d be okay sharing your wife on a regular basis?”
Dan drained the last of his beer and set the empty on the little table beside the couch. “Hell, yes. I mean, I know there would be a lot of logistics and specifics to work out, but if we could find someone on our wavelength, someone we both wanted to include, that would be the ideal.”
“But that’s just a dream, you know?” Kylie leaned into her husband. “Today, let’s enjoy each other. I’m more than ready”
“Sounds good to me.” Yeah, he was more than damn ready, too.
He wondered if, when it was his turn, he could get Kylie to straddle him in this chair and ride him hard. At the thought, his poor cock, which was already in distress, about strangled itself trying to get free. He tugged on the worn denim of his jeans, trying to ease the pressure.
Kylie’s low, throaty laugh sizzled his nerve endings.
“Got a little problem there, Clint?”
“No, I’m good.” But, of course, he wasn’t. His cock wanted out right that moment.
“Maybe I can help you.” She set her bottle down beside Dan’s, hopped off his lap, and walked over to the recliner, reaching out her hand. “May I?”
He didn’t know exactly what she was asking permission for, but what the hell? He nodded, his eyes dropping to her cleavage and the tempting swell of her breasts.
She unfastened the button at the top of his jeans, slowly lowered the zipper, and reached inside. Her fingers eased his shaft through the fly of his boxer briefs and closed lightly over his flesh, stroking it a few times. At her touch, heat flashed through his entire body, and his cock flexed.
Holy shit! They didn’t waste much time on preliminaries or social niceties. Well, fine by him. He wasn’t much for conversation anyway.
“Mmm.” She ran her tongue over her plump lower lip in a teasing motion. “This man really has it, sweetie. Maybe you should show him what you’ve got, too.”
Dan stood up and, as if she’d asked him nothing more than to move a pillow, began stripping off his clothes. When his dick popped free, Clint was sure it rivaled his in length and breadth. The thought popped into his mind that if they both fucked her at once, they’d be filling every inch of her. He hoped she was up for it because the image made his mouth water.
His eyes widened in surprise, though, once Dan was naked, to see him pull his boots on again.
“Surprised? Yeah, we’ve got this little fetish. We like to fuck with our boots on.” The man nodded at the box Clint had placed next to his helmet beside the chair. “Good chance to break your new ones in.”
Clint smothered a smile. This gave a whole new meaning to the term knockin’ boots.
“Okay, but you have to tell me how it started. You can’t just throw it out there without explanation.”
They looked at each other, and Dan grinned.

Buck up, cowboy, Ruby’s here!

I love bringing my heroes to their knees, making them suck it up, and endure a challenge. Especially when that man is a cowboy with certain ideas set in stone…or so he thinks.
Not only does my latest release For Ruby’s Love have such a cowboy, but also there is his lover, a CEO, for a spunky horse therapist to deal with.

Book Blurb:
Rancher Calhoun Cordell and businessman Daniel Patterson have struggled for almost two years as a couple, with careers and goals often in conflict. A tragic fire, leading to a traumatized valuable breeding mare, has Calhoun sending for a well-known horse whisperer. Except the man is dead. His daughter, Ruby McMurtry, shows up for the job instead and complicates their lives even more.

Excerpt:
He pulled open the over-sized front door and gaped at the bit of a woman shivering on the porch. She appeared a foot shorter than him and a good sixty or more pounds lighter. What hit him most were her eyes—an odd dark green, like jade or something. Her eyes narrowed as he looked her over.
Finally, she stretched to her full minimal height and bristled at him. “When you’re done checking me out, do you think you could let me inside? It’s colder than cold out here.”
Daniel stepped beside him and intervened. “Let the lady in, Cal.” He looked around her and asked, “Where’s your car? Assuming you drove here.”
She slid between them into the tiled foyer before turning back. “No car. And I didn’t drive here, at least not exactly.” Her teeth chattered.
Calhoun closed the door against the sharp winter breeze and watched her pull off a battered pink Stetson, unveiling chin-length strawberry-blonde hair. “What does ‘not exactly’ mean?” He added, “Who are you, anyway?”
She worried her trembling lower lip and glanced from him to Daniel and back. She pulled off a glove and stuck out her hand. “Ruby McMurtry.”
Instead of taking her hand, he puffed up in annoyance. “You’re late! Where’s your father?”
She started to lower her hand, glowering at him.  But he noticed something besides anger in the depths of those enchanting eyes. He couldn’t get a handle on the emotion.
While he tried to calm down, wishing he hadn’t jumped on her, Daniel reached out and shook her very red-looking hand.
“You feel like ice,” he said in concern. He took a second to scowl at him.
As she blinked at her hand sandwiched between Daniel’s, her already pink-chilled cheeks turned pinker. “I should’ve worn my thicker gloves,” she muttered in clear discomfort. When she managed to slip free, she glared at him.
A twinge of guilt about his rude behavior passed through him, but his anger came out first as he repeated himself. “Where’s your father? I have a serious bone to pick with him.”
Those eyes that still captivated him welled up with tears. His gut tightened.
Her lower lip wobbled and she sputtered, “He…he…he’s dead.”

Meet Sam Malone – One Smart, Sexy, and Determined Cowboy

By V.S. Morgan

I’m very excited to be here today talking about my new release, Sam’s Temptation.  You may noticed the cover has one hot male with a lovely lady instead of another hot guy. Some of you may be surprised to know I also write m/f romances. My hubby and son sure were!
When I wrote The Gift, I not only created character profiles for Wyatt and Rafael, I made one for each of Wyatt’s brothers.  I needed them to be real in my head since family was so important to Wyatt. While The Gift obviously focused on my two heroes, the other Malone brothers were “speaking” to me.
The next brother who was ready for a story was Sam. He’s the second oldest brother, so he also felt responsible for his younger brothers when their parents died in a tragic airplane crash. While Wyatt wrangled their siblings on the home front, Sam completed two degrees in college so he could manage the ranch’s finances and keep it afloat. It was his idea to expand their Montana cattle ranch, Blackbird, to accommodate paying guests.  This strategy saved it from going under.
All the Malone men are handsome – tall, blond and with steel-blue eyes. Sam is the quiet brother. Originally an engineering student, this hunky cowboy is intelligent and a bit of a nerd.  As I turned to considering Sam’s love interest, he insisted he was straight. We had a whole discussion about it – yes, we writers are a strange breed. So I finally said, “Fine, Sam. But who should be your lady?”
And then it came to me. Not only could I share more of the Malone brothers but I could also bring in some of Rafael’s family, as well.  Sam meets Rafael’s cousin, Gabriela, in New York, sparking an attraction that continues to burn despite time and distance.
However when Gabriela comes to Blackbird on a working vacation, Rafael tells the Malone brothers “hands off.”
Gabi is very smart, passionate, and owns her inner nerd, pushing all of Sam’s buttons. Sam battles with his desires for the deliciously sexy chef and honoring his new brother-in-law’s wishes.
Sam’s Temptation is mostly set at Blackbird, with Wyatt, Rafael, and most of the Malone brothers serving as key secondary characters.  I greatly enjoyed writing this multicultural foodie Western romance and look forward to hearing what readers think of Sam and Gabi’s story.

About Wyoming and an emotional Soul Dream

Leave me a comment. Someone will win a $10 GC to the online store of your choice

When you’re in Freewill, Wyoming, after a good lunch at Wyoming Eats, step across the street to Nina Foster Massie’s Books and More and bone up on the history of Wyoming and get some interesting facts.
Wyoming became the 44th state to join the union in 1890. Wyoming was the first U.S. state to allow women to vote--an achievement that represented one of the early victories of the American women’s suffrage movement. Today, although it is the 10th largest state by area, Wyoming has the smallest population of all the states, with just over 550,000 residents. The state is home to most of Yellowstone National Park, one of the most popular national parks in the country. Millions of tourists visit Wyoming every year to see the geyser Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest hot spring in the country, as well as a variety of wildlife including moose, elk, bighorn sheep, wolves, coyotes, eagles, black bears and grizzly bears.
The first historians to describe future Wyoming were Washington Irving and Francis Parkman. Irving took the journals of Captain Booneville and wrote a masterpiece; Parkman wrote about his trip over the Oregon trail in 1846. Irving was a literary giant and Parkman a historian with a novelists flare for writing well and weaving a masterful story in the process. They were both the beginnings of what would be a long line of historians.
On the crest of Medicine Mountain, 40 miles east of Lovell, Wyoming, is located the Medicine Wheel which has 28 spokes and a circumference of 245 feet. This was an ancient shrine built of stone by the hands of some forgotten tribe. A Crow chief has been reputed as saying, "It was built before the light came by people who had no iron." This prehistoric relic still remains one of Wyoming's unsolved puzzles.
Southwest of Lusk, covering an area of 400 square miles, are the remains of prehistoric stone quarries known as the "Spanish Diggings." Here is mute evidence of strenuous labor performed by many prehistoric groups at different times. Quartzite, jasper and agate were mined. Artifacts of this Wyoming material have been found as far away as the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys.
The historic Indians in Wyoming were nomadic tribes known as the Plains Indians and were made up of many different tribes. Among them the Abenaki Indians, whose dream legends formed part of the plot in my book, Soul Dreams. Of all of these tribes, the Cheyenne and Sioux were the last of the Indians to be controlled and placed on reservations.
The Plains Indians were the hunters, warriors and religious leaders of their tribes, therefore, their crafts were related to these occupations. Both men and women were artists and craftsmen traditionally, each producing articles for everyday use as well as for ceremonial purposes. Usually, quilling and beading were done by women and carving was done by the men.
Wyoming also has a long history of ranching and cowboys. Today you’ll find ranches all the in size from the Medicine Bend ranch which is 950 acres to the Red Reflet Ranch at 27000 acres. Hike through the Laramie Mountains and read about the ghost stories.
Nine also has her book store on line but you need the secret password. Perhaps you can find it in one of the Freewill, Wyoming books in the Western Escapes series. Put up your feet and pull up a cowboy. You’ll love it.

My Muse is at it Again!

Available HERE
My husband generally laughs at me when I say my muse has my ear...he doesn't understand what that means. I wish he did at times, let me tell you. For me though, this post is about just how dangerous it is to give your muse free rein.
As an author I rely on my muse to inspire me with ideas, with plots, visions, and for the most part that is exactly what she does. However, what she also does from time to time is bring in another muse to help her out. This time they've ganged up on me so I don't know which way to turn. I had started another project which would have seen another western one with a bit more spice to it. But nope, she decides to jump in and say lets do something different. Lets challenge you...you're not busy. As if running my own business, starting a new job, and writing wasn't enough for me to do.
I've been lucky with my muse, she usually gives me ideas that challenge me without overwhelming me.  Well, she challenged me this time in a way I've not felt before. Instead of stories which I'm typically comfortable with, she wants me to do something out of this world. Literally. I'm all for challenges, all for expanding my writing portfolio – but come on, I've never written anything remotely sci-fi-ish. There is a major difference between writing a paranormal romance and a sci-fi one.  Give it a shot! She says. You never know you might like it!
Might like it? Oh for the love of all that is holy! So I'm off to a killer start with this new story...but at the same time I'm plotting the demise of my muse. After all, how can I write westerns if I'm off in some other galaxy or time? Take this as a word of warning – never let your muse have any freedom. The moment you do – you'll be stuck with a story you're not sure you can even write much less write well.

Happy writing!

Patricia
