Summer Reading...or Listening

It’s summer and the temperatures are warming up. This is the time I love to sit out by the pool and imagine I’m on a beach somewhere reading. When I write during the summer nearly all of my stories have something to do with hot weather and the beach. To me there’s something very relaxing about soaking up the sun and escaping to a new world, even if it’s only for an hour or two. Of course, the resulting sun burn isn’t always as fun.

I like reading beach books, but I’m pretty much happy reading any story in the summer. My favorites are the ones that take me on an adventure.

My first audiobook, The Devil’s Bond, just released. The weather is perfect for sitting outside in Freewill, WY. Annaliese loves to work on her art projects outside. Garrett trains horses and spends time at the rodeos during the summer.

Finding Inspiration in the Texas Hill Country

With the last few books I’ve written I’ve used Pinterest for a lot of my inspiration, especially when it comes to finding locations and settings for places the characters go. In Saving Sultan, Dillon and Liam live in small town Texas in the middle of Hill Country. Growing up I used to travel from Dallas to Bandera, TX every summer for camp. This was the inspiration for setting Saving Sultan in Brady, Texas.

Now a few fun facts and pictures about a few of the towns mentioned in Saving Sultan:

Brady is the closest city to the geographical center of the state.

It has a population of 5,528 people (in 2010)

Brady is primarily and ranching and farming community.

Digger is a real horse. A very sweet horse at the stables where my daughter takes horseback-riding lessons. Here’s his picture.

Broken Spoke in Austin, Texas was the inspiration for the bar they go to after the rodeo in Llano.

This picture of the Llano River caught my attention, which is why the guys meet in Llano the weekend after their reunion.
