Shifting Hearts

Shifting Hearts
Book 1 in the Wiccan Haus Series

By Dominique Eastwick

The last of his kind…
Rekkus is the last of the great Black Tiger weres, and he’s happy to stay that way. Working as head of security for the Wiccan Haus, a magical spa for inner healing, he has enough danger to keep him busy. Unfortunately, the Fates are not content with him being comfortable.

Alone and discouraged…
Dana has walked away from everything—her fiancĂ©, family, job, and apartment. A stay at the Wiccan Haus may be the only way she can move on. But what she finds isn’t what she expects, nor is it what she thought she’d been seeking.
If they can open themselves up they might discover that being together can be better than being alone and learn that passion can burn in those who least expect it.

Meet the unusual residents of the Wiccan Haus.
The staff can get a little hairy, and not all of the guests eat what’s served in the dining hall. But the Rowan siblings do what they can to make the resort a place of healing and peace, using all of their years of practice. At the Haus, where humans and paranormals reside side by side, everyone in need of the services are welcome. If some happens to fall in love then all the better.

Welcome to the Wiccan Haus

“It’s not safe for you here with me. I left you alone last night, but, if you stay, I’m not sure I can honor a request to stop a second time.”
“I felt it, too,” she blurted, unable to keep it to herself any longer.
Rekkus moved so fast, she never saw him actually take a step. Strong, wet arms wrapped around her, and her breasts pressed against his chest. His eyes searched hers. He must have seen what he searched for because his lips were on hers with feverous desire before she formed another thought, demanding she open for him. And no part of her considered denying him anything. Butterflies churned in her stomach until she shook. In all the years with Frank, and it had been a great many, she’d never felt this, like fire threatened to engulf her.

Dana wound her arms around his neck, running her fingers through his damp hair and deepening the kiss. His moan allowed her to gather the nerve and strength to urge him forward. He forced her past her comfort zone into accepting the sexy seductress screaming to be let out. She knew what he most desired because she wanted it too. Wanted him, all of him, every naked inch, right there, next to the lake, not even a ten-minute walk from the Haus. Anyone might stumble across them, and she didn’t care. It almost added to the allure of having him. What she needed it to be.

The mysterious and intimidating lone wolf, Z, has returned to Los Lobos. Descended from a long line of gifted yet secretive shifters known as Infiltrators, his people are the spies of the shifting world, rarely seen and harder to track.

Ripley Greystone has a big problem—her pack is Alpha-less and a local coyote band knows it. The safety of her pack rides on trusting Drew, the new Alpha of the Black Hills Wolves. But, admitting the reason for needing his help isn’t something she’s quite ready to do.

Drew senses there’s more to Ripley’s request to join his pack than what she leads him to believe. There’s only one way to know for sure—send an Infiltrator to spy on Ripley and her pack.

Forced to infiltrate her pack to discover its hidden secrets and protect it from the coyotes determined to claim the she-wolves for themselves, Z finds more than he expects—all the while fighting the need to claim Ripley as his mate.

Except
A hairsbreadth divided them, and it took all the willpower he processed to fight the building desire to pull her into his arms. Her breathing quickened, and as he gazed into her blue eyes, her raw sensuality forced him deeper into the cavernous pit he’d fallen in when he’d first seen her.
The words came out on a whisper. “You feel it, too, don’t you?”
“This attraction?” Z raised an eyebrow.
She closed her eyes. “It won’t work. I have secrets you could never understand.”
“We all have secrets,” he said then gave in to his animal nature and claimed her lips, though touching her nowhere else. He burned himself into her, forcing her to recant her words of denial.
It will work. He didn’t know how, but he didn’t think he could walk away from these feelings again. Having ensured the Greystones posed no threat to the Tao Pack, he could make his top priority the safety of his mate. His second would be to figure out the logistics of having a mate not of his pack.
Her deep groan rumbled through him, and every thought but Ripley faded. Passion swirled and something new, something different…something more, accompanied by a fizz running along his spine and through his nervous system, charging his powers. The urge to howl grew.

Will from the Black Hill Wolves book Infiltrating her Pack is highly talented in making a meal that has any wolf or human licking their lips. So today I bring you his recipe for Roosevelt Beans.

1 pound hamburger
1/2 pound bacon, chopped into 1/2-inch dice
1 medium onion, chopped into 1/2-inch dice
1 (16 oz) can pork and beans (He likes the maple best)
1 (12 oz) can kidney beans
1 (12 oz) can lima beans
1 (12 oz) can butter beans
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup ketchup
3 tablespoons cider vinegar
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
salt and fresh ground black pepper (to taste)
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.

Fry hamburger and bacon together; saute onions with meats. Do not drain.

Stir in canned beans (it’s up to you if you want to drain the liquid from the canned beans. No liquid=Thicker beans) and remaining ingredients. Place in a large, oven safe container.

Bake in 325 degree F oven for about 45 minutes.
Serve and Enjoy. Depending on the stomachs you are feeding it should feed 6 to 8.

When Stories come to life…

Finally, nearly a year since Rebecca asked me if I would like to be a part of the Black Hills Wolves my story Infiltrating Her Pack is being published. And I couldn’t be happier to be a part of such a fun and enjoyable series. I love shared-world, whether it be simple like the 1 Night Stand series or complicated like the Wiccan Haus. There is something about writing characters and having others share them that is a great deal of fun.

The story in my head started to form rather quickly but it wasn’t until I took an overnight rafting trip that it solidified in my head. Much of what I write about from the campsite to the River is based on my personal experience on the Snake River.  The Campsite is much like I describe it in the book with the semi-permanent tents and the mess hut. This was one of the most beautiful locations to camp for the night and the images are still fresh in my head a year later.

Rafting lived up to my expectations and although I would do another overnighter, I know my limitations and think a 3 to 5-day trip might be too much for me. The first day we took a slow float down river but the second day we hit the rapids. Though our guide, who was very handsome, didn’t have the experience or agility that Ripley, my heroine, has when working the class 4 rapids. Ripley doesn’t lose anyone in her boat, where my real life guide lost two, and would have been three if my mama instinct hadn’t kicked in and I grabbed my son for dear life. Fear not, other than a good soaking, everyone came through it with nothing more than a great tale to tell. The picture is actually my father as he fell out of the boat. Oops I think we lost one…no make that two. Did I mention the last thing the guide said to us before we entered the rapids was “I haven’t lost anyone yet.”
I hope you enjoy my additions to the BHW series and equally hope that if you are every in the Jackson Hole area to avail yourself to the river experiences there on the Snake river.

Ah, Yes, the Corset

Image courtesy of Victoria & Albert Museum/London
by Dominique Eastwick

Clothing: every character wears it, and in most romances, at one time or another, they have to take it off. But how many really know how period clothing works? I thought long and hard about this blog and what to talk about. I have a background in Costume design and history, so to summarize the history of costumes into one page is not going to happen. But I thought maybe we could bring it down to one piece.

The Corset
Such an integral part of who women were and what they wore. Here was a piece of fabric with whale bones and later, metal stays, sewn into it to completely alter what a women’s shape looked like. You think today’s man is upset about the Wonder Bra, thinking he's romancing a woman with a C-cup only to find out she's barely an A? Imagine taking a woman to bed who can’t even take off her corset because she can’t live without one since her body has been so distorted by it.
Now, not all periods had corsets that were uncomfortable and inflexible. Certainly the Regency period had looser stays then the Victorian (which altered the waist to unbelievable sizes), Gibson Girl (which created an unnatural “S” shape to the body) or Elizabethan era (which complexly flattened the front of the body). But all were meant to alter the shape of the woman’s body to the desirable look of the era.
So let’s talk about the corset. The basics are the same no matter what period of time you're talking about, it's only where and how the cinching occurs that changes. I am not saying all corsets are the same;  just the purpose.
Let’s stick with Regency as it’s the most romanticized. The silhouette of the woman accentuated the bust. The waistline fell just below the bust and slowly headed south as the 1800s progressed. The corset's main job was to push up the breasts, and of course, it still cinched the waist, but no one saw the waist so it was straighter and less hour-glass.
Corsets were expensive. Poor women didn't wear them. Not only could they not afford them, but wearing one would make it impossible to work in the fields. However, a woman of moderate status, trying to gain more status, would definitely aspire to have one. And those with money would have many. The corset was made to the individual’s body. It would have fit like a second skin in most eras.
Because corsets were expensive, you protected them. A chemise or shift would have been worn under the corset ensuring it didn’t get sweat upon. A petticoat would be worn over the corset adding protection to the corset.
Now, the big problem when writing about the Regency period is we all think that the corset could be easily removed. In fact, it couldn’t. The item would be laced up the back. For some the lacing weren’t merely zig-zagged, but might have several places that the laces would go straight up to the next hole. Then once the corset was completely laced, the maid would take those two lacings that went up rather the zig-zag and pull them tight and tie from there. This allowed for a tighter look in certain places.
Thus making the quickie in the library is less likely. I am not saying it didn’t happen, just not as frequently as we writers seem to write about. A man, no matter how experienced in getting a lady dressed, would be hard-pressed to get the corset just right to allow for the dress to fit properly again. Remember, most women spent a good majority of their time dressing for the events of the evening.
But I, as a reader and writer, will gladly suspend my disbelief for a well-written love scene and quick tryst with the right hero and heroine.

And as a closing thought...did you know men once wore corsets too? They found them cumbersome and uncomfortable, so stopped wearing them. Smart Men.
