What a Goddess Listens To...

It’s been a very busy year since Goddess of the Hunt was first released. My brother got married. I got married. My daughter got married. My family moved into a new home. Around the time of Goddess’s release I had begun work on a full-length manuscript. Because of all the interruptions, I didn’t finish that MS and begin work on Paige’s next mission until recently. Clearly, that wasn’t what I had planned, but hey…that’s life!
To get back into Covert Passion’s world, I pulled up the playlist I had listened to while writing Goddess of the Hunt. I quickly realized that Eoin’s effect on Paige has altered her mindset. She’s going to need to adapt without having that evolution change how she does her job. A CIA covert operative needs to leave sentimentality at the door. And I realized that the playlist I have isn’t the music I need. But before I go foraging in my iTunes library, I thought I’d share the original playlist with you:

Fiona Apple – Criminal
No Doubt – Just a Girl
Oasis – Wonderwall
The Verve – Bitter Sweet Symphony
The Cranberries – Linger
Radiohead – Creep
Foo Fighters – Everlong
Audioslave – Like a Stone
The Toadies – Possum Kingdom
Lenny Kravitz – Again

If you’re interested in hearing the songs, you can find them here http://bit.ly/1K8eO8p

As I was diving back into Paige’s dangerous, sexy life and trying to decide what music would best reflect that, I found out that Goddess of the Hunt would be on sale at Amazon for 99 cents and free at the ARe bookstore throughout the month of May. That’s exciting. As a friend said, “A deal and a steal!” Grab your copy of Goddess of the Hunt, cue up the playlist and enjoy!

Covert Passions
Goddess of the Hunt
by Becky Flade

Codename Diana
CIA field agent Paige Aster hides a cunning intelligence and lethal skill behind a mask of golden beauty. It serves her well as she moves from one undercover assignment to the next.
Current Mission
Retrieve a stolen United States military defense program from a terrorist cell in Dublin, Ireland, before they trade it to Islamic extremists in exchange for munitions. Her only back up on this time-sensitive mission is a deeply embedded MI-6 operative.
Her Asset
Eoin Fitzpatrick has sacrificed everyone he holds dear to bring these terrorists to justice. He’ll sacrifice Diana, too, if she threatens to compromise his mission or his cover. He has orders to do just that – his agency is only doing hers a favor.
Compromised or Comprising?
Paige expects danger, but welcomes passion – taking her pleasure where and when it’s offered. She’s not prepared for the effect Eoin has on her. Or what happens when she surrenders to him. Paige burns for Eoin but will he leave her burned…

Enjoy the following excerpt from Goddess of the Hunt:

“Is it done? Do you and the others in the house bring in sex partners from time to time?” She straightened and stared at him.
“Yes.” He hissed the answer.
“I’m travelling; you and I meet at a pub and go to your place to hook up. It’s simple and happens all the time. Believable, even.” She thought of Michel and her lips tilted at the corners. Then, casting her eyes over Eoin, she deliberately arched a brow and tucked her tongue in her cheek. “Well, for most people, anyway.”
His lips thinned and the muscles in his cheek ticked as he worked to control the flare of temper. It delighted her. “Fine, we’ll do it your way.” Eoin pushed himself from the chair he’d been perched on and nearly charged for the door. “I’ll be here at seven-thirty tomorrow morning, be ready.”
Paige grabbed his arm as he passed her. “What are you so worked up about? If it goes wrong, you can just leave me hanging and you know it. This costs you nothing, Paddy-boy; it’s my ass on the line.”
He grabbed her shirt and pushed her against the closet door. She didn’t fight it and he had his mouth on her in seconds. His tongue delved and demanded she respond; she arched up into the kiss. Delight, desire, and anger thrummed through her as she both succumbed and made demands of her own. His hands molded to her hips and pinned her between the hard planes of his body and the wall behind her. Then he abruptly pulled away. They stood inches apart; the air crackled around them. Their gazes locked. He opened his mouth, then shook his head and left without a word.
Tie score.

A Necessary Evil

By Becky Flade

Villains, I love ‘em. A juicy bad guy is so much fun to read, to watch, to write. They get the best lines and they get to behave in the most atrocious manner without apology. I read somewhere not long ago that the best bad guys believe they are in fact the good guys but I don’t believe that. Nope. The best bad guys know that they are bad and they revel in their debauchery. I personally do not enjoy a bad guy that is conflicted by his/her demons. I don’t want to feel empathy for the villain. I want an antagonist I can really sink my teeth into.
It’s like asking Anne Rice fans which character they preferred: Louis or Lestat, which I’ve done, and Lestat almost always wins. Let’s face it--Louis was a world-class whiner.
Well-written heroes, and heroines alike, have to have a little darkness to round out the light or you get a boring Pollyanna; an unrealistic goody-goody that no one will be able to relate to because people are not that two-dimensional. But the opposite does not hold true when crafting the bad guy. Oh no, the villain, ah, the villain can be simply motivated by the darkest of desires. He doesn’t have to be complex because the reader doesn’t have to connect. The reader doesn’t want to connect. As an author, you don’t want them to; you want them to fear the villain, to loathe him, but most importantly you need him to make your protagonist heroic.
Villains are a necessary evil. And damn if they’re not a good time, too.

Enjoy this excerpt from Goddess of the Hunt:

Reece stood and paced. Matthew sat quiet, watchful, and Reece considered him out of his peripheral vision. He loved Matthew like a brother, the only family he had, and he’d kill Matthew in a heartbeat. He thought Matthew knew it, too. What kind of monster did that make him? He didn’t care. He stopped when the guttural sex noises down the hall ceased.
“I don’t like it. Keep an eye on her. And on Eoin.”
“Do you really think he’d turn on us after all this time?” Matthew added whiskey to two tumblers.
“We killed his brother, mate. I’ll never trust him fully. Not like I trust you. But, no, I don’t think he would betray us for a pretty piece of ass. That doesn’t mean I don’t want you to watch him just the same.” Reece picked up his drink and took a healthy sip. “Matter of fact, Matthew? Reach out to our little friend across the pond and see what he can dig up on the delightfully loud Ms. Fleming.”
Matthew picked up his own glass but didn’t drink from it.
“Reece? Is this genuine caution or are you just searching for a reason to take the woman for yourself?”
“Does it matter?”

What Makes a Hero?

It’s been some time since I’ve been featured on the Decadent blog and it’s a pleasure to be back.  When thinking about what I wanted to talk about today, I kept coming back to just one topic - Heroes. Usually the heroes in romance books are larger than life figures: billionaires, cowboys, pirates, soldiers, and so on; dashing figures that rescue the heroine whether from a literal foe or a figurative one. But in my Decadent release, Goddess of the Hunt, the heroine, CIA covert operative Paige Aster, is a larger than life character fully capable of handling whatever danger looms. I needed a strong, sexy man that would complement Paige without detracting from her uniqueness.
Enter Eoin Fitzpatrick [inspired by the handsome-as-sin Michael Fassbender]. A man of caution and contradictions, he is torn between a sense of chivalry, his lust for his partner and the quest for justice that drives him. He knows, even while he succumbs to Paige’s seduction, that he may be forced to choose between his lover and bringing down the men that destroyed his family.
And in that decisive moment, Eoin proves, in my opinion, the defining characteristic of what makes a hero.
