A Brief Thought on Rules

By Gina Wynn

Rules. What would life be without them? We drive on the left in Britain…but don’t try that in the States. We stop for a red light. We don’t talk with our mouths full. We all rise when the judge enters the courtroom. Maybe we all have personal rules, too. Always wear clean underwear in case you get rushed to hospital. No sex with socks on. But what would we do if someone removed the rules?

In Her Dollmaker’s Desire, Amy’s rules are taken away. They wouldn’t make sense outside her world of dancing, but she doesn’t know quite how to function without them. Before, she had rules for every occasion – what to eat, when to speak, etc. but she suddenly has no one to reinforce them. Worse, she has a situation she doesn’t know how to handle, and no rules to guide her through. What exactly should she do with a motorbike riding, leather jacket wearing, tattooed ex-gang member?
