What Does He Want?

by Heather Long

One of the best parts of being an author is creating heroes and heroines. I know you’ve probably heard this before; however, it’s true. Whenever I start a new project, I rarely know much about the world they inhabit or the places they’ve been. I know the hero, though, and I know his heroine. It doesn’t matter whether I’m writing contemporary or paranormal, the stories always begin with the hero or the heroine for me. They’re character journeys.

Who are they?
What do they want?
Where will they go?

Those questions haunt me through every single word on every page.  In my latest release, Ryker Grey is a loner. He’s a dangerous predator who loves far more deeply than any might realize. The majority of his pack is afraid of him. Few members ever seek him out, fewer still want to talk to him.
For his part, Ryker accepts isolation as his due. The pack is right to fear him. For years, he was the boogeyman. Magnum would send him to murder and destroy, but Ryker believes in justice, real justice. He found ways to circumvent Magnum’s commands. Remove a wolf? He would arrange for them to leave. He used his position and power to intimidate to keep those wolves silent so they could escape Magnum’s terror.
With every act, he isolated himself further and further from his pack. The defense of the Black Hills Wolves is who he is. He is the hammer and the stone. He will not allow them to be harmed. Terrifying them is his penance for being unable to stop Magnum. Ryker knows he wasn’t able to circumvent the blood oath, but that doesn’t change his opinion of himself.
He failed his pack and will not fail them again.
What he wants is to protect is the pack and their way of life. He wants to keep them physically safe, spiritually free, and emotionally even. Their needs always supersede his own. He will go anywhere for them, do anything they need. His wants are simple… at least until he meets the very human Saja.  Forbidden fruit, as it were, Saja changes Ryker’s world.
For her? He is willing to risk himself, but never his pack. The challenge opens a new chapter for the Black Hills Wolves.
Are you ready for What a Wolf Wants?
