Life with a Sicilian

Cue the Godfather theme music….

Just chatting about my last trip to Sicily last year and updating about a cousin on the run situation.

As most of you know, and maybe not,my BFF, hubby, confidante, and knight in shining armor is a direct product of Palermo, Sicily. His father actually ran with Lucky Luciano and Myer Lansky back in the day. He even has a picture of him and his gang having lunch at some restaurant. His dad is like 104 years old. Seriously. We had his 104th birthday party last year. We also had a scare. He fell off his fishing boat (yeah, he still fishes), and broke some bones.

He’s doing as well as can be expected, walks around the neighborhood, but his grandchildren and great-grands have taken over the fishery. He ain’t happy about that, but Mama Spalino  (who is 100) put her foot down.

We don’t know how long he and Mama Spalino will be with us. They are healthier that most people half their age. But we are spending as much time with them as we can. In fact, we are leaving for Italy next month.

Some of you know that the hubster and our mutual friend bought a villa in southern Italy. It’s a place that we are seriously considering moving to and he wants to retire. But for now, it’s a working olive and goat farm. Yeah, more on that later. LOL

Anyway, everyone from the family came to help Papa Spalino recover. Everyone in the village came to help. He is a very revered man. An honest man. Like most Sicilians.

Which brings me to this: Guiseppe will tell anyone, especially women, that if you date a Sicilian, two to one, you’re dating someone that’s done ten to twenty.

He comes from a HUGE family. Ninety-five percent of them are honest, hard-working people. His favorite uncle use to be a politician that fought against the mafia and help clean up Palermo.

Use to be. He was murdered fifteen years ago. His torso was found in the river.

Guiseppe’s cousin belonged to the gang that did it. It was his father.

He went to the funeral vowed, vengeance and two weeks later, three men where found sliced up in an alley.

He’s been on the run ever since…

Until now.

He’s back!

We got a call from some of his “buddies”, last week, letting us know he’s been seen.

Guiseppe and our mutual friend were in tears. Me, too, but for a different reason. I don’t like this guy. He’s evil personified. Yeah, I had the “pleasure” of meeting him. He’s charming. Never trust charming people.

Guiseppe wants him to turn himself in. The worse he’ll get is life in prison.

I know, you’re asking, “Isn’t that bad enough?” You read the stuff prior right?

Well, cousin actually called. He won’t tell us where he is. He sounds older, but not wiser. We really want him to turn himself in and to turn in the guys that murdered his dad. I mean, damn! I know there is a code of silence, but this is ridiculous!

So needless to say, we’ve had a very emotional conversation with cousin. Don’t know where he is. And really don’t want to know. But we are trying to convince him to do the right thing.

We’ll see. Stay tuned
