Writing advice
floods the web. Many say authors MUST have a brand, stick to one genre. Label
yourself clearly so readers will know exactly what they'll get when they pick
up one of your books.
I
disagree. I say, go with your gut. Give your passion free rein, let it sweep
you up into its arms and carry you away wherever it will. Passion is
contagious. If you get caught up in it, then so will readers.
To me,
genre ranks way below the story itself - whether the characters are compelling,
the premise is engaging, the story keeps you turning pages. But then, I'm an
eclectic reader. You'll find on my bookshelves everything from literary,
mainstream, speculative and scifi, fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal, horror
and more. And that's just the fiction. Plenty of nonfiction titles are squeezed
in there too, from poetry to reference to historical.
But the
difference between the historical books I own and those I read in school is
simple. Passion comes through in every one. The writers loved their subjects,
were captivated by them, and couldn't wait to share.
That's how
I feel about my own stories. And you've probably guessed I'm an eclectic writer
as well. Paranormal, contemporary, mainstream or historical, the genre doesn't
matter. I get caught up in them, and can't wait to share them.
Betting It All is my latest historical. I like to
choose time periods or areas or events that are a little out of the ordinary,
something readers might not know too much about, but will find as interesting as
I do. This story's set during the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco - not quite
a Western, not quite a Victorian. But it's full of great characters who have
great hearts. Not to mention passion. :)

Another great sounding book - Betting It All! Good luck, as always, but this year, I swear you've already got that locked up!
Getting rid of captcha would garner more comments.
When reading, I tend to stick to science fiction, fantasy, and thrillers, but I branch out often. (Yes, I've even read chick lit!)
I'll probably stick to my genre if I keep writing, but as I've discovered, space opera has a much wider appeal than I ever anticipated. And since it contains so many other genre elements, I can still just write a good story.
A woman who reads and writes like I do. Well, I don't write as well or as speedy as you, but, yep, I'm an all genre reader and writer.
Like you, I want to write what I feel passionate about at that time.
