Why Would You Write THAT??

by Sara Brookes

I get asked a lot why I write BDSM. After my typical response of: “Why not?” I explain that the psychology behind it fascinates me. This usually throws most people for a loop. After all, say “BDSM” to the average American and, if they haven’t cringed away or called you a few choice names, think it’s all about the whips, chains and various other assorted devices people identify with BDSM.

But, believe it or not, without the psychology, those things would never come into play.

Though I do use some of the typical implements identified with BDSM (collars, cuffs, floggers, etc), you’ll find most of my books are more about Dominance and submission, or D/s.

In my Sypricon Masters series, the Doms in the club use their most powerful instrument to work with their subs—their voices. Though there are devices most people are used to seeing in regards to BDSM (though, I did make a few enhancements and changes—the series is sci-fi after all *g*) the key things between the characters is their connection.

To me, that’s one of the most important things when it comes to genuine BDSM.

She is an action movie junkie, addicted to coffee and has been known to stay up until the wee hours of the morning playing RPG video games. Despite all this, she is a romantic at heart and is always a sucker for an excellent love story. Born and bred in Virginia, Sara still lives there with her husband and daughter. The entire family is owned by two cats, Galahad and Loki, who graciously allow the family to cater to their every desire.

I have to admit, the D/s thing isn't my scene. I have read a few and I do like the emotional connection drawn between the characters but it's so far away from what I would either like to try or even fantasize about that I can't really get my head around it. I know it's immensely popular so I guess I'm on the outside here! I love your covers by the way!

Thanks, Barbara! I think it's the same as liking certain genres and not others. Some people won't read sci-fi or fantasy or horror because it contains elements that just don't interest them. :^)

So what IS the psychology behind it? Why do the Doms dominate, and why do the subs submit?

I never read BDSM before reading one of yours, but now I'm hooked. Keep up the excellent writing! :)

I have read some of these and while it is not my idea of fun, I know it is others and I love the connection they make.

Back in 2008, I never thought I would enjoy reading BDSM and D/s novels until some online reading buddies started talking about Deviations: Submission by Chris Owen and Jodi Payne.

I tried it, loved it, bought the rest of the series and have enjoyed this genre ever since!

I have the Sypricon series on my must have list.

Thanks,

I'm with you 100% on this. D/s is such a fascinating, complex and deeply passionate thing. Most people won't ever truly understand it, and I find myself recently in a place in real life trying to teach women who want to try this lifestyle that being a submissive doesn't mean checking your brains at the door. It takes an extremely strong person to submit to another and I love it when authors get that part right in their stories. The other thing most don't ever understand is how much a dom needs their sub and how much power the sub actually has in this type of relationship. A D/s relationship can be so utterly bone deep satisfying unlike any vanilla relationship can even hope for and I think all those things, make D/s far more interesting than the ties, chains and whips. I'd like to see more people get that part. ;-)
