Finding My Talent

by Jessica E. Subject

Growing up, I never expected to be an author. Sure, it was one of the many things I checked off in my School Days book that I wanted to be when I grew up, along with teacher, police woman, postal carrier and many others. In high school, even though I took English for all five years plus a Science-Fiction English course, it wasn’t my favorite subject. Math was. And I ended up going to University for Business Administration with hopes of working in marketing one day.

So how did I end up writing? On maternity leave with my second child, I was bored. Yes, I was busy, but my mind needed a challenge. (I’d taken accounting courses when off with my first child.)

At the time, my daughter was learning to read and she hated it. She’d scream and cry and I’d be ready to pull my hair out. I mean, I read to her all the time, had flashcards, and made sure she saw me reading. But that didn’t matter. So I set out to write a book for her about superheroes, a passion she shares with her father (and me.) Well, somehow those superheroes turned into aliens and found themselves in some adult situations. Not exactly what I set out to write.

I wrote another book for her featuring her unicorn named Topaz and printed it out just for her. But by this time, I was addicted. I couldn’t stop writing. I had so many ideas and finally an outlet for my non-stop mind.

But my writing wasn’t great. It wasn’t even good. I’ve learned a lot over the past four years, and I’m still learning.

Celestial Seduction was my first submission, with many more in the works. I hope you enjoy this story.

Blurb:

At the end of his obligated commitment to the Space Service, Frey Berger decides to stay on Earth to further experience human emotions rather than return to Ginnun where his intended has already mated with another. Looking for real love and someone to accept him for what he is, Frey enlists in Madame Evangeline’s popular dating service. Although he does not understand the concept of a one-night stand, he hopes to find his perfect mate.
Carrie Cooper’s husband divorced her for someone who could provide him with children, leaving her with little self-confidence and no desire to let a man hurt her again. Her best friend convinces her to join a dating service, claiming Carrie needs to get laid, while not winding up with a broken heart since her date requires no commitment after the night is over.
Although several misunderstandings nearly derail them before the date has even begun, Carrie and Frey end up becoming closer than they ever believed possible. Still, Frey will need to convince Carrie that her perfect mate isn’t human at all, and that one night can lead to a forever love.

Jessica Subject went from fearing the possibility of aliens to reading and writing about them. Combining her love of both science fiction and romance, she creates happily-ever-afters for the entire universe. She lives in Southwestern Ontario, Canada with her husband, two children and their seven year-old rabbit.

Gawd, I remember those days... my son (the first) found reading a very difficult thing to learn. It's so-o frustrating. And, lol, I gained various holisitic diploma's when my son was a baba, to keep me balanced. Thankfully, the classes were a stones throw away, and came with free childcare. Blessing! And with my second child, our daughter, came the writing. Funny how folks end up on the writing path :) Love hearing stories like that xx Thanks so much for sharing, Jessica xxx
And and I hope one day you published said unicorn books. Imagine all the little girls you'd make very happy. There never is enough magical unicorns books in the world for little girls. hehe Gosh, they just love 'em, don't they?

Barbara - Thank you so much! :)

Carrie - Funny to look back on it now, but not so funny at the time. Thankfully she is reading MG books by herself now, above grade level.

JoAnne - Besides reading, my daughter also now loves to draw. I told her when she's older, we'll write and illustrate children's books together.

Maureen - I know! SFR rocks! Thanks for dropping by.

Great post - I love hearing about how other writers came to find their passion. :) It's funny how many similarities - and differences - we have. I always wanted to be a writer, even before I learned to write. I (dorkily?) took college English classes during my senior year of high school. I also went to college for business. Now I work part-time in marketing/sales and devote full time hours to writing! And I've always had a thing for aliens... ;)
